    How dreadful it must have been for these destroyer commanders, knowing that the odds against them increased with every sortie, seemingly unrecognized by the high command, safe in Tokyo. Perhaps if those fellows had stood on the bridges during these suicidal missions they'd have been a tad more conservative!

      The Japanese hi command had eliminated everyone who was against the war with the US. The United States was 26 times larger than Japan, had twice the population, enormously greater economic and manufacturing power and all of the resources that Japan did not, with the exception of rubber, which the US learned how to synthesize.
      If the Japanese command had been conservative, they would not have started what could only turn out to be a war of attrition, which Japan could not win. These men would not have been put in a position where they would have to follow orders that would inevitably lead to their destruction and the deaths of many of their enemies.
