  • New Mayfair Orchestra (dir. by Carroll Gibbons) - Do Something, Fox-Trot from the film “Nothing But the Truth” (Green-Stept) with Vocal refrain, HMV 1929 (UK)
NOTE: "Do Something" (1929) is a song written by Sam H. Stept and Bud Green for the Paramount Pictures sound comedy Nothing But the Truth released in USA in March 1929, in which the song was performed by Helen Kane. The scene of Kane singing this song is missing from the only existing print of the movie. However, the song was presented also in the film Syncopation released in April 1929, where it was sung by Dorothy Lee. Syncopation is RKO's first sound musical film with many numbers featured by the popular American dance band Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians. The film was heavily marketed on its release, being the first film to be broadcast over the radio.
The New Mayfair Dance Orchestra was the HMV house band, which was allowed to lapse in early 1921, but since 1928 it appears again as studio orchestra used for recording purposes as the New Mayfair Dance Orchestra (or The New Mayfair Orchestra, depending on the type of material recorded). Over the years sessions were directed by various musicians including Percival Mackey, Carroll Gibbons, Ronnie Munro, Phil Green and from 1929 by Ray Noble (1929-1934. During several months of the Carroll Gibbons' leadership, the orchestra’s arrangements strongly reflected the 1920s vogue for syncopation, with the band's passages punctuated by individual solos (including the great American trumpeter Sylvester Ahola). In mid-1929, Gibbons gave up the studio band and focused on leading his own dance orchestra, The Savoy Orpheans. In this recording, the vocals are made by male trio, whose singing style is clearly modeled on the famous Rhythm Boys - the vocal trio of Paul Whiteman's Orchestra (Bing Crosby, Al Rinker and Harry Barris) - with the famous “shhh” punctuating their syncopations.

Wonderful music and wonderful posters! What an elegant time the 20s was! And the female models was very long and thin even in those days! Thanks for uploading!

Art deco has this dictum of a straight vertical line, and super quality materials. That is why it is so fascinating today, in our poor times of mass-produced trash.

Thank you. Fortunately, the interwar years were a paradise for posters designers all over the world and there is still plenty to choose from today. Greetings

A typical 20s tune I'm fond of. This refined version is most enjoyable, thank you very much for sharing! Again, this presentation was a visual feast as well :-)

The idea behind the posters was that any of the grey passers-by on the streets could insert themselves in place of these anonymous models, driving Rolls-Royce cars or dressing in Bond Street.
