I like to have a few blank white index cards handy to place around the area that I am working on to keep me from getting distracted on a larger painting like these beautiful tigers. Ah Louise, Louise, you must appreciate yourself as we appreciate you. We see someone whose talent we only wish to emulate. Please be more kind to yourself. You choose your subjects well. You’ve solidified your talent. You know your talents despite the fact you always think you could have done better. I don’t see what you see. I see a wonderful unique talent. Could you let us know if you have any paying patrons because you do certainly deserve them.
I purchased a most beautiful painting off a rooster call His Majesty. He had colorful bands around one leg and the other was lifted. It was so charming to me, I had to have it. This was back in 1978. It was double matted and framed in a silver 20” square frame. It was signed. I paid $ 12.00 Canadian dollars which to me was grossly underpriced. I treasure this Rooster. Now I watch you paint and pray you are managing to sell your painting for the money you deserve. I so enjoy your sense of humor. 🇨🇦🙏🏻✝️❤️

The tigers turned out looking gorgeous. I love the dry-brush effect at the bottom of the rock and the warm color at the top of the painting.

I painted a tiger with watercolor recently too. I was in doubt about how to balance the wet on wet and wet on dry techniques for the black stripes. Any more advice Louise?

I am one of those people you described...I have good basic watercolour skills, can create a really satisfying painting when following on to a tutorial, but when painting my own designs from scratch my results are very inconsistent. Thanks to this video I realised that I am too impatient to get onto the main painting (instead of planning and completing a study first)! When I think of the cost of materials (especially 100% cotton paper) this is bonkers! Will take your advice onboard for my next project...

Hi Louise & thank you. This is an immensely useful guide for those of us who would like to start working on familiar real life subjects from our own environments. While I'm grateful for the free content online, I do find it a little frustrating that there is saturation-level repetition of tutorials for some things I've never seen e.g. Red Cardinals, but so few for the Galah, Cockatoo, Pelican, Skink or Blue-Tongued Lizard on my doorstep. It's clearly time I stopped being lazy & took my own pics. Love your work!

Hi again Louise - we have a lovely series running on tv at the moment - called 'Tigers in the House' and set in an Australian zoo where they are working on a conservation programme to save Sumatran tigers from extinction - two brothers were born and their carer - a lovely guy is called Giles (Clark I think) the 2 tigers are called Spot and Stripe - I wondered if they could be the ones you photographed here? I generally don't like to see animals in captivity but when I watched this guy helping the mother when she gave birth - the trust and obvious love she had for him was very moving and made me realise how lucky the tigers are to be in such amazing care - and they have a lot of safe space to play in, I am sure you know all about it, let's hope that his programme works.
This tutorial was exactly what I needed. I have been very anxious to paint from my own photos. It has given me a methodical approach, to plan what I need to do before I even put brush to paper. Thank you so much. Deep breath, I can do this!
Orientation landscape is my favorite format. For those who aren't familiar with it, it's close to a square but still a rectangle sort of and ends up looking almost like a triangular window. Google it. It could end up being your favorite to. Great video louise. Thanks for putting the reference photo, line drawing and finished "sketch" on Patreon for us.

Hello. I have just found your youtube channel . I am trying to teach myself watercolors, and my work shows that I desperately need lessons. This was so berry helpful, Louise! Thank you for sharing the steps of your process and the tips you’ve used to find your “groove.” I often find myself searching for hours for great photos, spending hours mixing paint colors & trying them with different techniques, and painting several thumbnail practice pieces before I’m ready to start a “final” piece. I’ve been thinking that perhaps I overthink it and should “get to it” more quickly... but now I realize those practices are not strange at all and are useful to others.

Thankyou so much for your inspiration and tuition. I only started painting just before the covid 19 and this was something I really struggled with. I started watching a lot of watercolour videos online during our lockdown and have picked up heaps of techniques from a number of artists who all had different styles but kept coming back to yours because of the instruction content. It's like I am in the room with you. Will definitely consider one or two of your online courses - is there any particular one I should start with? Once again thankyou from an excited beginner in NZ.

Thank you - helpful information as usual. Interesting to hear you rub graphite all over the back of your drawing to transfer to watercolor paper. I'm not sure, but there may be a "tracing" paper that would work, but perhaps it produces lines too dark. The eyes of any living thing are so crucial. So I understand why you want to get them done early in the painting. Can't wait to see your finished "real" painting of the tigers.
Thanks Mary. You can buy saral paper and transfer paper but I've been using the graphite method lately because it's less dirty. I find saral paper leaves lots of marks on the paper. I want to invest in a projector. I think that will make the task easier and quicker.

thank you Louise! This has been interesting to watch! I loved the bloopers too, makes you so genuine :) I was surprised you paint the eyes first! I love to do it in the end like you said it's where everything comes to life and I love to see this all at once... But now you mention it, indeed it's often the focal point and you don't want to mess it up. So yes best to do it when you're not tired, I'll change this habit!
