      It's not only good sportsmanship, it's also amazing game management skill. Let your coach argue the call. Not only do Umpires have much better conversations with coaching staff, you're likely to find Umpires want to get the call right and are willing to listen, but not in a 2on1 battle. Worst case scenerio, if your coach gets ejected, shit happens. If a player gets ejected, then that position is vacant and needs someone to come in cold from the bench to take over.

    These calls were wrong but some of them were very close and it's easy to scrutinize them after the fact with slow-mo replay.

      He did not scrutinize anybody. Not a negative word was said. How is calling a runner tagged out a close play when the ball is on the ground? Nothing close about that. One major stipulation of tagging a runner out is to first poses the ball. no margin for closeness. It is a simple yes, or no. Sometimes no, wait a minute, I mean yes. accepting ones mistakes spares one the horror of others pointing them out later.

      i tell you what, the first call at home was brutal to watch. umpire was in the worst spot because he thought the throw was going to hit him. he stepped to the side and that was his 1st mistake.
      the last call at 3rd base, amazing that any umpire could miss that call. the fielder tagged the back leg, so where would the front leg have to be? oh yeah, touching the base. OUCH!

    • @juanvante
      @juanvante 6 років тому

    • @formercoach1202

      @@cb-tz8og The ball on the ground may not be anywhere near as easy a call to make as you think it is. Remember, the camera angle has a clear view of the ball on the ground. The umpires view has both the majority of the defenders body, the majority of the runners body, and the the fielders glove all potentially blocking his view.
      I do think he is too close on this play to make the call.
      On the other 3rd base call. I think he missed it because he was looking too straight on at the play. From the looks of his positioning, he appears to be almost at the baseline. This would mean he would be looking through the runners back to make the call.

      They aren't easy calls by any means. If they are isolated calls here and there then it is ok, but if it is a regular occurance close or not than it's a problem. You can't use they are hard calls if it's a regular problem since it's their job to get it right.

    So what was wrong with the second call? She offered at the pitcher making it a strike. The ball is live and it touched her, interfering with catcher making a play on the runner she was bunting to advance. As she began running with the attempt she was out of the batter's box, further solidifying an interference call

    The day I started umpiring my mentor taught me a quote from Jim Evans, a former major league umpire. It went "Umpiring is the only job where they expect you to be perfect and then get better." If it takes slow motion replay to show the call is wrong then, pardon me, but learn to live with it. It's high school softball. No one died and if someone lost money on the score of a High School softball game then shame on them, not the umpire.
    Most people can't decide what they want for lunch at McDonald's with the menu staring them in the face. In the course of a 7 inning softball game a plate umpire sees about 200 pitches. That's 200 split second decisions on Ball/Strike alone and it's happening at 60 to 70 miles an hour. Then add in all the other calls that happen at game speed and you begin to see the problem.
    One time a parent yelled at me from center field that my strike zone stunk, so I went out into center field and sat in the lawn chair next to him and threatened to call balls and strikes from there because I could see the balls and strikes so much clearer from 375 feet away from the plate. He was embarrassed that he put his son and his son's team in that spot. To his credit the guy apologized and I went back behind the plate. He joined the High School Umpire's association I was in the next year and he and I do games together to this day. He's a good umpire and an even better partner and he always tells me that me embarrassing him that day made him a good umpire, a better fan and a better parent.
    If you've never missed a call, then you've never umpired and those of us that do umpire won't sit here and pick apart what other umpires are doing with the benefit of replay. Besides college coaches are not watching Ms. Emily to see how the umpire are doing. Ms. Emily seems to be playing very well and she seems to be coping with the breaks very well. That's the important thing.

    I mean, some of them were just bad positioning. They're not professionals from the looks of it, so I don't really blame them for their positioning.
    One good thing I did see is that the umps didn't eject the coaches for arguing unlike some MLB umps *cough* Hernandez *cough* Carapazza *cough* .

    • @kevinh3214
      @kevinh3214 7 років тому

      xApolloJustice MP they get paid so the umps are technically professionals and they should try to get it right. But these are mostly close calls. I wouldn’t really call any of them BAD calls just some tough calls where if they had a partner they should have gone to them for help. And actually the only one where he couldn’t go for help from his Ump partner and shouldn’t, HE DID. I believe his partner told him that too. They play at first was a judgement call and didn’t meet the criteria of an umpire meeting. The only time an Ump can ask his partner for help with a call is a 1 missed tag 2 a pulled foot 3 blocked by a player or 4 he just plain falls down and doesn’t see it.

    • @cb-tz8og
      @cb-tz8og 7 років тому +1

      By definition they are professionals. They are paid to do a job. Paid by the participants no less. The least they can do is try to constantly improve their abilities. They can learn from watching clips like this, so maybe they don't always get themselves stuck w/ bad angles. Pride alone should motivate most adults to stop looking like fools around children that are temporarily under their authority. It sends the right message to our youths when they do the best job they possibly can. Should we teach our children the Awe, fuck it ne'erdowell half effort, it really doesn't matter if you get it right, as long as you show up and get paid attitude? No we should not.

    I'm an umpire, and for the record, I just want to say that I find it very annoying when parents do this (as well as coaches), when they have most likely never umpired a game in their life and don't understand that the game is moving very fast and that we as umpires do not have slow motion like what is shown in this video. There are going to be times where we may make mistakes, but that is because we are human. Just let everyone enjoy participating in this great game, because frankly, these kinds of people are decreasing my passion for baseball,

    • @brandonmilligan7706
      @brandonmilligan7706 7 років тому +18

      As a fellow umpire, I wholeheartedly agree. We make hundreds of calls in a game (if you're working the plate) and are constantly trying to get the best angle for a play in the field if you're the field umpire. 2-man crew can't cover or see the entire diamond, baseball, 10+ players, and the ball perfectly every time. Bad umpire calls are when the umpire makes a ruling that is incorrect. Judgement calls, especially on ones THIS close, where you literally froze the video and highlighted what you wanted to emphasize, is pretty pretentious.

      I've been in both spots. I think more umps need to own up, they have the right to think about a call and over turn it. But 99.9% have too big of head to think they where wrong. Asking for help to get the correct call makes you a better man, not acting like your never wrong.

    • @jumperguy9867
      @jumperguy9867 7 років тому +17

      I also umpire, and I disagree with you wholeheartedly. If umpires are not held to high standards, there will continue to be horrible calls, and umpires will not work to better themselves. I have worked with umpires who lack judgment, do not know the rules adequately, and fail consistently to get in a good position to make the best call possible. In the first segment, the plate umpire KNEW the throw was coming home, and had time (but failed) to get into a proper position to actually see a play...and despite the FACT he could not POSSIBLY have seen a tag (the video confirms it), he called an out anyway. He SHOULD have called her safe. If there HAD been a tag, and the defending team appealed, then he would have been able to cover his ass and get his partner's help and get the call right.

  • @antonioguillan92
    @antonioguillan92 5 років тому +46

    As an ump, this video a a great example for people that we don’t have the same angles and ability to stop and slow motion a game like you do. Also, we have to keep all elements of the play in vision while keeping ourselves out of the way as much as possible. Two of these are great examples of that, the play changing view was not in the view of the ump despite their best efforts.... two were ump failure. The first one was an ump failure, he was way out of position (and judging by his body language, he knew it as soon as the play came his way)
    The out at first called safe, I have can see how the base ump missed it, but there is no reason the plate ump who was up the line and had full view of all four elements shrugged off the base ump asking for help.
    Umps are human too, remember, a pitcher can miss the strike zone 50% of the time and be perfect, the batter can hit it 30-40% of the time and be considered great, but umps are considered terrible if we miss 1-2 calls a game.
    Btw, anyone who has umpired can tell you, we are aware of more calls we have made (especially balls and strikes) than you are and we will never let you know. Getting used to having to eat a call you made the wrong way is harder than learning to not flinch at high balls the catcher misses.

      But that’s why you’re getting paid, TO BE in right position to judge, you’re not hitting, you’re not pitching, you’re not running, so you have plenty of time to position yourself and be prepared to make the call.

    • @haydenhodges34
      @haydenhodges34 3 роки тому +2

      @@verzomusic These age groups are usually two-man crews. With multiple runners on it is almost impossible to be in the right position on every throw for every play.
      Umpiring is not as easy as those whom have never done it like to think it is. The scenarios are endless.
      My now retired assignor used to say, "You're going to miss some judgment calls. I will back you up on that 100%. However, there's never an excuse to not know the rules."

    Always so critical....maybe this is why there is a shortage of umpires because no one else is willing to step up and accept this level of criticism. Bang-bang plays are tough, you make the best call you can, from the best position you can be in. @1:37 - Having 1 foot in the box does not "protect" the batter from interfering with a FAIR ball that is NOT in (or over) the box. It only protects them from being hit by a fair ball that is still in the box (since part of the batter's box extends into fair territory.) The ump made the CORRECT call, in this case.

A 2 man crew where both umpires are moving on EVERY ball in play, locating it, the baserunners, the fielders, all at the same time is not going to happen flawlessly. Clip #2 highlights the wrong moment. The batter does not touch the ball at that point (1:37 mark). The batter-runner contacts the ball with her hip/thigh after leaving the box (1:43-1:44 mark). This results in the ball changing direction, from coming back toward the plate, to heading out into the field. This was a solid call by the plate umpire.

    "Emily Burrow" videos frequently pop up on UA-cam. Thanks to Emily's dad Jim Burrow for the tons of excellent video clips during her high school/travel ball years. They are exceptional quality and contain many examples of high level softball. lt turns out they are a great resource for players, coaches, and umpires who are interested in seeing how it's done (or shouldn't be done)! The details matter and that is what many of the "Emily Burrow" clips show. I'm an umpire, and I agree that these calls were wrong. The out call when the fielder dropped the ball could be reversed by the plate umpire asking his partner for help, or by the plate umpire noticing that the ball was dropped in the first place. Now, baseball umpires are taught to get in the wedge (being in the catcher's left hip pocket, or directly opposite the catcher) to get a better angle on plays at the plate. These principles can also be used on the bases, and I wouldn't be surprised if softball umpires are also taught to get in the wedge. The wedge principle could have helped on the mistaken out calls at home plate and 3rd base. On the mistaken safe call at first base, the umpire should wait to ensure that the 1st baseman had the ball before the runner's foot touches the base, and replay the sequence in his mind. In addition, the fair/foul call on the batter hit by a batted ball in the box is typically called a foul ball in baseball, because the majority of the batter's box is in foul territory. The softball rule may be similar, so unless the batter was clearly outside the batter's box (one foot completely outside the batter's box) when she was hit by the batted ball in fair territory, she should not be called out.

    Sorry if I come off as rude, but what i don't understand is why uploading this kind of stuff matters.
    I have been playing baseball since i was 5 ( and now am 19) in fucking Australia. I'm happy just to get out on the field and play because i love baseball.
    My club which only has about 15 teams from ages 5 up until as old as you want to be always is in need of umpires and often umpires may umpire back to back 2-3 hour games over the course of a blazing hot saturday. The umpires are often given drinks ( in cases of seniors games, beers afterwards) and are treated with respect unless some idiotic parents want to complain about darling little Timmy's calls outside the strike zone. Bad calls, which are judged WITHOUT the use of SLOW MOTION (which does nothing because the human eye cannot slow shit down) are groaned about but we get on with it because its a fucking GAME.
    Why, the fuck, do you feel the need to edit this stuff? Why do you care? WHY HAVE YOU PUT EFFORT INTO THIS ITS A FUCKING AMATEUR SOFTBALL GAME

    • @cb-tz8og

      He didn't disrespect any umpires individually, or call them out by name. He just showed off some video editing skills and provided some clear answers to doubts other parents of his daughters teammates may have had. As for verifying the accuracy of the officials accuracy, every single major league professional sport uses instant replay, despite the union backing the respective officials are protected by.
      Sure its an amateur softball game, but it isn't recreational league. It is highly competitive and not cheap to participate in. If I were to scrape up the cash to send my kid off to a national tournament I would not want to see her be cheated out of any personal merit due to incompetency. Its not the end of the world to be called out, but since I would be paying the person that makes the calls, they might as well make the right call more often than not. Australia sucks shit at baseball. You all are so bad that when I played on the USA Jr. National baseball team your continent was never even mentioned as a potentially worthy opponent. We went and schooled Europeans instead, then sent them down to beat your asses. Stick with kangaroo raping for youre continental pastime. It has to be better than kissing umpire ass the way you do. As an umpire, I like to see these videos to try to learn what I could do to prevent the mistakes. #1 - Didn't get into position quick enough and was way too far from the plate. #2 - That's one of the hardest calls to have to make. The ball is blocked, so you can't t ell exactly when it hits the batter. #3 - Was kind of close, but not that close. Throw in the dirt makes it harder, but ... #4 - He was right on top of the play. I can't tell if she beat the tag, but the 3B definitely dropped the ball. He got shielded a bit - he should have been a couple of feet further up the line, but that's a tough one to cover with a 2-man crew. #5 - Another tough one to cover with a 2-man crew because he has to be in position to react to either 2B or 3B, Still, he should get a couple of quick step in during the throw to cut the distance, and the tag was pretty high.

    Never did baseball but spent years in SE Ohio basketball official. Sometimes things happen so fast it’s very hard to be in the right spot on the court to get a real good look. It was a challenge to try to get the call right, keep the both teams, players and coaches happy, and both groups of fans cheering instead of jeering, and keep my own feelings in check because when you were a local ref you probably had a connection with one or both teams and probably had some personal preference which team you liked better. I have been the ref when my home team played our biggest rival and made a game changing call late in the 4th quarter that hurt the chances for my home school to win. I had made a similar call in the first quarter against the home school and was blasted because I was being a “homer” for the school I graduated from. When I made the same call then my home school fans called me “traitor”! Ref’s never win! BUT we also never lose!

      Yeah. Clearly club ball. Scholastic softball isn't nearly as competitive. That's what many need to remember. These girls are scouted by colleges almost entirely during club season. Recruiters don't waste their time watching high school softball. They love to see players handle these situations exactly the way this girl does. Its just nice to not get hosed so one can show more than their ability to deal with disappointment. The umpires aren't trying to qualify for more prestigious tournament. The girls sure as hell are though. With the time restrictions that dictate end of game, one blown call at the wrong time can be potentially huge. Umps need to stop hiding behind their masks, and sack up as often as possible. That is all anyone is asking of them. Be professional professionals, regardless of the entity that issues the paycheck.

The play at about 4:46, poor 2 man mechanics, this is the plate umpire's call, he should be up the line making this call. Base ump should circle down to cover potential play at home afterwards.

    Perfectly explainable-- it's just part of the game. The umps can't be in every position for every call, and in every one of these examples the ump's view is obstructed so they make the best call they can. It's not like it's incompetence-- just a poor angle on the call... The ump doesn't have the luxury of saying "I don't know, I couldn't see it..." He has to make a call.

      Bad umpires making bad calls is part of the game, since they are the only professionals on earth that are never to be held accountable, or expected to learn ways to improve their ability to perform the job they are paid to do. These calls all had one thing in common. Lazy, umpires that cared not to get into proper position according to game play. They simply stood, and waited for the game to happen no matter what view it bothered to leave them with.

    It's real easy to make the "right" call seeing these plays in slow motion stop action! As an umpire I can tell you positioning is important on getting the right angle to make a call but, in reality, things happen and sometimes you just get caught out of position on a bang bang play. I can easily see making each of these calls as they were made in the video. Despite some folks opinions, umpires, like coaches and players, are human too and do make mistakes. I couldn't tell if any of these guys were working with a partner but it always is smart to ask for help if you're not sure about a call. On the other hand, if I felt I got the call correct, I would tell the coach, it was my call and I don't feel I need to check.
