Broken down into the cognitive steps, students can determine what symbols mean in the text. This video shows the strategy for introducing the concept (even though kids in 8th grade were exposed WHAT symbols are in prior years, I never assume they were taught HOW to figure it out).
I am a Grade 10 Literature Teacher and I am in love with the way you teach these things. Will incorporate these wonderful steps in my class next school year. Thank you for this! :)
Hello, I'm a middle school teacher in Seattle. I enjoy these types of videos from you, this and the Theme video. I would very much enjoy seeing more like these.
4 years into teaching is too long to have gone without encountering your work. This is incredible stuff!!!
glad you are finding it helpful!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and beneficial videos! This is my first year teaching middle schoolers, after 15 years with elementary and intermediate kiddos. These will be excellent strategies for my mini-lessons with the workshop approach!
These videos of yours are so helpful, I've always struggled to teach this and theme and you make it so accessible, thanks so much!
I think I'll use this lesson in my anthro course for undergrads. Great video!!
I'm an English major in college, and this helped me. Thank you! :)
Love this approach to symbolism. Have you thought about creating a student video to help learn this technique?
You're my kind of teacher. I'm glad I stumbled on your videos. Thanks for making us look good. (I teach high school English).
Teacher power! My hubby is also a high school teacher. :)
What I really liked about your pedagogy, and what resonated with me, is not telling your students what the theme is/symbols are , as if they can't get something else I didn't see. I don't like telling my students what the elements are; I like to let them discover it as long as they can "prove" it with textual evidence. It's more fun, and student centered.
So helpful! Thanks!
GENIUS!!!! Thanks for sharing your teachings!!!!! :)
I really like this. Going to build on it to put together my lesson tomorrow -- thank you!
omg this is so so incredibly helpful for planning lessons !!! thank you for this video !!!
Hi Sara, I love the way you teach theme. I use the Theme in 4 steps now!!! I want more clarification on the way you teach Symbolism though. I will check out your blog.
Your creativity and teaching skills are inspiring!
Brilliant! Trying this tomorrow.
Thank you SO much! I was trying to figure out how to teach symbolism next week for summer school, and this is perfect!
This is a great video - thank you!
WOAH! Thank you! I always had a hard time with finding symbols and now its incredibly easy!

This is so great! Thanks.
Hi. I'm a 60-year-old kid whose mind got messed up by learning a little about symbolism. I know you're talking about it in the literary sense because that's your job. I see symbols in life outside of books. Perhaps mine is a case of seeing "storytelling" outside of the world of literature. A thought has occurred to my mind, and has turned out to be quite persistent. I think money is symbolic. As powerful as money is, it depends entirely on its context and on the social agreement to use money as a symbol of the work we invest, then trade for other things we need. Maybe that's too philosophical, and I could start a bit more down to earth. The flag of the U.S. is quite definitely a symbol, and is a symbol or emblem for which soldiers will fight, risk their lives, and die.
This is probably not part of your work as an educator, but I came to ask you to share some thoughts--if you have them and want to tell--about symbolism in everyday life.
