    It's funny that this simulation is brand new and still completely wrong. When the Estonia sank she capsized to about 180°. Not just 90°. There is even proof of this, one of the passengers had a camera in his pocket and tried to use the Flash to signal nearby ships to the scene. By doing so he accidentally took a photo of a passenger sitting on the hull near the propellers and rudder, provning that the ship had capsized completely

    Scary and sad story of this little ship, it was the pride of Estline and pride of Estonia's shipping after the breakup of the Soviet union. It was also the biggest ship in the Estonia's fleet. But, big waves and a faulty design made it to sink on 28.9.1994. R.I.P to those who died.

      It's a pretty common practice on RORO ferries, and there are many that have worked totally fine for many many years. They need to be built properly though.

    • @silenx764
      @silenx764 8 років тому +5

    • @Ultimaton100
      @Ultimaton100 6 років тому +25

      RORO ferries are built to accommodate automobiles, yes, but Estonia wasn’t equipped with an emergency watertight bulkhead behind her loading ramp doors, which were exposed to the rough seas when the bow visor was torn off. At the time of the disaster, it was a recommended safety feature but not a legally-required one in most countries. The loss of Estonia and most of her passengers and crew changed that. It’s sad it often takes horrific tragedy for safety features that already exist to be implemented, such as proper numbers of lifeboats finally being required by law after Titanic.

    • @muhdyusuf24
      @muhdyusuf24 6 років тому +5

      Bleeding Eye Watcher I also heard that she was badly maintained? And the design flaws of the bridge and systems where the crew on the bridge didn't notice/know the bow visor had been torn off. Also estonia is speeding in pretty high speed during that night which she wasn't built for that kind of condition or I'm mistaken here?

    I cannot comment on this accident or commercial shipping or this crew (may they rest in peace) but with superyachts etc. crews qualifications the RYA Oceanmaster is often considered the gold standard. I did that course myself a few years ago and it had very little to do with practical "seamanship" and everything to do with parroting COREG's (and only then in perfect weather). Ask one of those so called qualified skippers what to do if your boat starts taking on water or your engine fails on a lee shore at night and they haven't got a clue. The very first principle of seamanship should be keeping everyone safe, particularly when things start to go wrong - not memorizing rarely seen nav lght combinations. I am half way round a global circumnavigation in a small boat and all the skills that keep me safe i learnt off old salts, not in a classroom.

    Carl Eric Reintamm did arrive the promenade deck 1 till 2 minutes after the loud 2 or 3 bangs that happened between ca. kl. 01.02 or 01.05.
    According to JAIC the bow visor fell of the ship around kl. 01.16.
    So the 2-3 big bangs, water on deck 1, and the following starboard listing did happen ca. 10-15 minutes before the separation of the bow visor!
    That is pretty strange, because that means that the sekvens of happenings did indeed start approximum 12-15 minutes before the car ramp could have let all the water inn on the car deck.
    That brings the questions on why the water came in on deck 1, and why the ship listed before the ramp fell down and the visor separated from the ship !?
    Reintamm did see something in the water that left the ship backwards to the left app. 10 minutes before the separation of the bow visor.
    Assuming that Reintamm looked backwards to the left from starboard promenade deck point of view, the thing in the water most likely could have hit the starboard side of the ship before the separation of the visor, and the opening of the ramp.
    If Reintamm speaks truth it clearly proves without any shadow of a doubt that the specific time of the the 2-3 loud bangs, the inlet of the water on deck 1, followed by the with 30 degrees starboard listing a few minutes later, that this sekvens of events clearly happened before the separation of the visor and the downfall of the ramp........

    I've watched some documentaries on this, and even if the bridge couldn't see that the bow was completely open to the water, it seems weird to me that they didn't have any sort of back-up water-tight compartments between the car deck and the passenger decks. Even weirder is the fact that nobody came to acknowledge the damage that had been done to the ship untill alot of people started dying.
    If anyone has any information on how ro-ro ferries are built, please reply to this comment! :-)

    • @J0xxe
      @J0xxe 8 років тому +7

      +Karl XIV Johan The ship wasn't built for harsh weather like that. Even though the Baltic Sea is relatively calm, this ship was more of an coastal ship. Also they had way too much speed considering the weather and the ship. The shipyard which built the ship also got a lot of criticism for not building a watertight bulkhead behind the visor even though many other ships built before estonia had one.
      So basically it was not built for the conditions it faced on the open sea and it was operated totally wrong considering its capabilities.

    • @leDespicable

      People with knowledge about boats know that a ship with that size has alot of air pockets. It wont sink in more or less 40 min without a hole emptying the air.. The other ferry that was exactly the same as estonia, was floating upside down for days. Other thing is, before they even had dived to have a look, they had almost closed the case and said it was the visor. That alone should tell you something.

    • @leDespicable

      Elliot Chen there is not a cockpit on a ship, only a helm, wheelhouse or bridge.

    Without a hole on the bottom the boat will under no circumstances sink that fast . Reason for the sinking of Estonia was made possibe becouse a hole and nothing else meaning this simulation gives false information that was allready publicly told before investigators eaven knew where the boat is

      aaro12 mistäs päättelet että se on tienny mitään kallistumasta tai mistään ennen kuin ollu liian myöhästä. Ei sieltä ohjaamosta voi tietää ja nähdä mitään

      Kapteeni yritti kääntää laivaa että se kaatuu suoraan alloista, niin kuin miten Poseidon laiva siitä elokuvasta kaatui kun aalto osui sen sivuun.
