I must say, that bass (baritone) really doesn't have the best voice for this role ... maybe because I've heard John Tomlinson sing it so much and he has a very imposing, almost authoritative voice.
The sad irony is that Gabor Bretz -- a true Hungarian bass -- was at the Met at the same time as this production, making his debut as Escamillo. Leave it to the Met and their peerless ability to miscast to have an actual Hungarian with the right voice for the role in the house and not put him in the production.

Their accent is really cute :) But they are doing this in the original language - Hungarian, wich is absolutely admirable :)
But still I find it great that they tried and learnt this very sophisticated and complex lyrics and music.
Saw the opening night. Very impressive in performance.
Bartok discreetly slipped a few bucks to Richard Strauss's heirs.
Видели "Синюю бороду" в Варшаве. Потрясающе!
Why is expressionist opera so extra???

+ThaSchwab I really agree with you. The voice of this bass sounds rough. Tomlinson was really impressive.

John Tomlinson ist mit dieser Rolle absolut überfordert.
