everything you said makes sense and I've watches a lot of oil painters. Breaking down the painting into different stages makes sense. What's the different between underpaintings and a grisailles?

I was going to try this technique on an oil painting I'm currently working on.. and then I was too scared to try 😂 To be fair, I mostly work in watercolour & gouache, so I'm still really new to oils. But I do want to try this out on another lower pressured oil painting ☺️
