I’ve had one of these for years that does pretty much the same thing. Here’s hoping that I can bring it back to life as quickly and easily as you did. Thanks for the video, I really didn’t expect to find anything useful on UA-cam.

Number one, do NOT panic :) I've run into various issues with amps and check at the back and punch a guitar plug in and out at the remote control / foot switch etc, sometimes that's the issue. Clean cord, and guitar even too, so lots of things that can go wrong. I hope you get it up and running 🤠

@@SirTools Would you mind elaborating just a tad with regards to “ punch a guitar plug in and out at the remote / foot switch etc” ? I think you mean just a 1/4” jack in and out of everywhere that I can with power off, though not entirely sure. Apologies, I am quite a novice to the realm of fixing gear.

Using a 1/4 inch guitar jack push it in and out on the amp. Even the rear ones. Sometimes they loose contact and shut down the amps output.

Ok I have a tip for you sir. That was my first real guitar amp as a teen and I still have it. I have since replaced all of the pots and I have experienced this on and off again stuff and I would bet money that it is not a Marshall specific issue and it probably happens to most amps that use the same types of jacks as this one. The jacks are of the "sensing" type so to speak. For example I used to plug some of my pedals into the effects send and return jacks. The way those types of jacks work is that they have contacts that open and close depending on if a cable is inserted or not. Unplug your amp and use some electrical contact cleaner on the end of your guitar cable and plug it in and out to clean the internal contacts or better yet just spray the straw right inside there. Then you should be able to see the sensing contacts from the outside of the jack housing if I remember correctly and you can spray those while plugging and unplugging. Sometimes mine would go in and out if the effects loop jacks "cable sensing" contacts were dirty and not making contact, the amp would think there was a cable plugged in and then the power section doesn't get sent a signal and it is getting sent out the effects send but since nothing is plugged into the effects loop, the signal goes nowhere. So clean all of your jacks and let the contact cleaner evaporate and then you should be golden. I would bet money that your experiencing the same thing mine did. If you want to verify if that is the issue before you clean it, just plug a dummy cable in and out of the effects send and return jacks and see if it comes back to working again. I would be interested to hear if that helped you at all.

Not the Jack, but the diode solder was loose. I've had bad jacks etc, blown speakers, leaky capacitors, tube issues and a long long list of fun with guitar amps. No one caught my comment about coming full circle in life. Started in garage bands, worked up to signed with Sony records and recorded in Europe and now back in the garage these days LOLOL..

So since nobody has said it yet; this is a Marshall MG which, while still capable, is a solid state amplifier. This is why people are posting that they’ve got theirs for relatively cheap. It’s their budget/student level amplifier. (You still got a good deal for a 2x12 250 watt amp though.)
If I were a salesman I’d aim the MG250 2x12 at the teenager/20-something in his first gigging punk/rock band.
The MG is a real Marshall but not a real tube Marshall. Still a good amplifier, shit on a lot by those who never figured out how to use it (likely because it was their first/second amp ever).
I have an MG10 for desktop riff writing. They’re still more harmonically rich than most anything else SS in their price range on the market.

I had to sell off my collection years ago which included a Marshall stack, Fender, Peavy etc...we jumped on a boat and sailed to the Caribbean for a few years. Coming video later this week I just rescued a Fender amp from salt water and, ok...I could fix the speaker LOLOL...too much damage but got the board working ..YES...

Sounds fun! So many great amplifiers these days at low costs that people like you or I never had growing up. My first amp was a modeler but it was one of the first of its kind on the market, it was modeled after three “popular” amps with analog switches - nothing digital yet! lol

Great video… I’ve seen so many Marshall amp, heads and stacks go through my house. When you’ve got a player in the house I believe that means a daily Craigslist search. He has done a lot of turn around and made a small profit but it is amazing how much guitar stuff goes up for sale because ‘my wife said I had to’! Thanks for sharing and a great find, glad your wife asked the price!

I would keep the Peavey and sell the Marshall. speaking about solid state amps In my opinion Peavey has better reputation as workhorse amps than Marshall.

    • @SirTools
      @SirTools  Рік тому +1

I've owned a lot of amps in my past. The Peavey was always solid for use and never had troubles with them. Fender was not always good. Marshall has a nice sound, but...they are finicky.

@@SirToolsI had a Marshall 8080 that I bought new. I barely used it. After about two years when it was kept in the original carton, it stopped working. For a malfunction in the potentiometer, I paid a lot of money to a technician. In the end I sold it and bought a used peavey bandit red stripe which sounds miles better than the marshal.
I also bought a 2nd hand fender Super Champ XD in mint condition which was sound horrible. I sold it because the sound and because it is a disposable amp.
in case fender scxd dies you can make from it a flowerpot.

Peavey Rage 158 is a legendary desktop amp. Can be both horrible or absolutely fantastic depending on settings, which come down to meticulous, tiny, micro adjustments.
