It would be far cheaper to build a close replica from scratch - this is a rocket after all, designed to be very lightweight so it can be launched into space; it wasn't built rugged like a road side sign normally would be. They never should have left it out exposed to the elements - it either needed a permanent building soon after installation, or the realization that eventually it would need to be demolished when it deteriorated too badly. We're actually well past that second point now. It's sad that it will have to go, but we can blame that on whoever forgot that a rocket won't do well outdoors indefinitely. Maybe they assumed they would be gifted something newer by now, so they never thought it would be around this long.

As someone from around Huntsville, most everyone loves seeing the rockets around. In a way, it makes you proud to call this place home and it's always a welcoming sight to see when you cross the state line.
Restore it, I can recall passing through not knowing of its existence. When I saw the rocket, I was perplexed. This made me research history and learn about Alabama’s involvement in the space program. History is worth saving.
Alabama sent people to the moon. Huntsville, and the Marshall Space Flight Center to be more exact. People remember Houston and Cape Canaveral, but do not realize that it was all created in Alabama. Huntsville is still to this day a city where NASA conducts operations, and when we go back to the moon, most of what is built and tested to go there will happen in Huntsville.
That's American history guys! Should be made into a national landmark. Yes it may not be as pretty or stunning as mount Rushmore or Yellowstone but that amazing piece of history is part of America. I hope they can petition for it's safe restoration.
It probably won't survive restoration. It was designed to hold up to the structural stresses of keeping fuel together for five minutes of flight, then be discarded into the atmosphere to burn up. It wasn't meant to withstand the ages of weathering. It's probably a goner anyway with even the best intentions

I live in Huntsville, and never actually noticed a rocket at the rest stop. but I live near the space and rocker center so I see the big rocket everyday and during the night(and you can see it during the day) the light shining on the rocket changes colors depending on the holiday or sometimes randomly, it’s really cool.

My first ever drive from Indiana to Florida in 1996, this rest stop and Atlas rocket just completely amazed me! _It's a historic site for many and, should be restored and left there!_

As a space nerd that would literally plan an entire trip to Alabama solely for space tourism… I would say restore it. I would know EXACTLY what rest stop I would be going for, what town I’d be visiting. I’d wanna see it. I truly hope they restore it.
when going thru Alabama and back I remember seeing the massive beast. we stopped there once and I made a video of it. there were lots of pigeons and a dead one next to it. I hate to see it gone and hope they don't take it down. if they do, replace it with SLS Block 2 rocket

The rocket's functions were controlled by the IBM-programmed Instrument Unit, which is the black band at the top of the S-IV B-200 (second stage) and below the conical Spacecraft Launch Adapter. The IU was programmed with punch cards and the programming transferred to discs which were installed in the IU's flight computers. The IU ignited the 8 mains, the S-1 B forward interstage retros, the S-IV B ullage motors and main motor, and controlled vehicle guidance, engine gimballing, and staging.
I’ve been there and stopped just to see it. The first thing that impressed me was it’s size. The second thing that impressed me was how small it really was! It was incredible that a rocket like that was capable of launching all that equipment, plus three men, up into space with everything they needed to get to the Moon and back! All on that little rocket!!!

The Saturn IB is the same family but much smaller than the Saturn V that was flown on the lunar missions. The Saturn V is massive and would stand more than 200 ft. taller than the one at the rest area.
Maybe they could gut the rocket and make a reinforced steel skeleton to hold the outside parts on. That way, it wouldn't look any different, but it wouldn't fall down on anyone.
I wish they would keep it in Alabama. I am from Huntsville and adore the rockets we have, but when I see the 1B I know I am close to home. If we can't keep it, I hope whoever gets it restores it to its former glory.

In a similarly obscure place, there is a Redstone Missile, the same type that took Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom on suborbital Mercury flights, in Warren, New Hampshire. It’s very cool because it’s just a big rocket in the center of a very tiny and spread out town.
It's structural integrity is being called into question. It's nearly 200 ft tall if it were to collapse somehow it would absolutely kill/hurt people at worst or damage property at minimum. I'm not too sure about Alabama but if they have tornados or hurricanes keeping a multi ton rotting rocket around for pictures is a incredible risk for virtually 0 reward.

Plus several at Marshall Space Center,including a Saturn 'in stages' on it's side,another Saturn standing upright (quite the landmark!) and what has special meaning to me,a Nike-Hercules & I think also a Pershing? (Father was a 34 yr Army NCO, every second posting we had from 1968-81 was RSA,and these were the two programs my father spent the most time working with....including serving as an instructor at Redstone!)
My dad worked as a drafter on the Saturn rocket project at Martin Marietta. Those were the days of real company culture and community. Going to show this to dad. Will bring back some memories for him.
I hate that it’s being taken down. I remember stopping every summer on my way to Tennessee to stay with my cousins. I have fond memories of visiting the rocket as a child. I really hope they replace it with something just as awesome for future generations to enjoy.
I’m in mobile, Alabama down here on the gulfcoast I haven’t been that far up north Alabama but I say fix it up, and put it back they say they know their home when they see that rocket that’s the same about the Dolly Parton bridge we know we’re almost home when we’re on that bridge so I can relate to my north Alabama folks.

The US Air Force did a lot of low Earth orbit stuff in the early years of the program if you're interested check it out.

When I attended FSU and would drive back and forth from Indiana.. I always loved seeing the rocket. Was usually a half way-ish point for me. I hope it gets to stay.

I have stopped their for years every time I would drive by I would stop. This rocket needs to stay and be restored. Need to start a petition it has become an iconic land mark

Tired of this country destroying amazing land marks like that just to "revitalize" an area. You can fix up the rest stop AND the rocket.
It’s so sad that it seems to have not been kept up. It should have been a requirement when it was donated from NASA that it had to be maintained.
I've remembered that rocket at the exact stop whenever my family goes on vacations. They should NOT get rid of the rocket. It'll be so sad; I even saw it when I was a little boy.
