Enrigue is something else isn’t he? I love when you can tell he’s having fun, like the moments where it’ll zoom into one person’s consciousness then get ridiculous & break the third wall. Totally fearless. I wish I was better equipped to follow where he goes. I hope it has convinced you to give Sudden Death a go.
It’s definitely piqued my interest. And yes- that’s a great point. There is a playfulness there, mixed in with all the chaotic madness happening. Well said.
I can’t believe it’s time to do this tag again!!! What a crazy rhythm this year’s had! Love your recommendations, I’d love to try the Maisie Dobbs and also I guess I should look into Amor Towles. James also seems very interesting, although I have never read Huckleberry Finn and have no idea what it’s about, so maybe I should start there
Always a delight to listen to your videos. I did read Erpenbeck's Kairos but did not enjoy it as much as her earlier Go, Went, Gone. My personal favorite this year so far has been Daniel Mason's North Woods. (Also recently enjoyed Mary Shelley's classic, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.) You have inspired me to try Zola and Natalia Ginzberg.
So great to see you back with a new video! Kairos is also on my tbr, German Democratic Republic stories always interest me. Both Brooklyn and Long Island are also waiting on my shelves. And yes! to l’Assommoir! Zola is brilliant. Now on to Nana!
This was a lovely sweep through your reading so far this year. I have You Dreamed of Empires and you have made me more excited about it. Undiscovered was a struggle for me too. I think Wiener was intentional in making her character as challenging as possible but it became a distraction.
I share your excitement about James and Long Island. Both were so memorable. I listened to Colm Toibin talk on the NYT book podcast about his inspiration for both books and it made me love his work even more.
Love Massie Dobbs, too. I listened to them on audio over the years when had to drive to work. Just got the last CD out of library too! Waiting for Karois to arrive; reading James and EB with Author Spotlight. Loved River East, River West and looking for Mongrel. ❤
@@HardcoverHearts When the book was published in Portugal, I ordered a copy. It had been recommended by a friend. I could not stop reading when it arrived. It took me a few days. it is not an easy novel to read. The language is beautiful and there is so much going on. But I am suspect! I love any novel that takes place in the Northeast of Brazil. I am a great admirer of the books of Jorge Amado, Josue Montello, and Jose Lins do Rego, some of the great authors who wrote about that part of Brazil. I think the book is one of the best to come out of Brazil in the last few years. I do read a lot of Brazilian stuff.
James is the new release I desperately want to read! Loved hearing what you’ve been reading.
@@myreadinglife8816 I think you will also love it, Heidi!

The Maisie Dobbs series includes some early usage of psychotherapy, which may be a bonus for you! Happy mid year and I hope you aren’t freaking out. 😉
James & You Dream of Empires also my favorites so far this year. Thanks for the video. Made my Monday bright!
Aw- thank you, Robin!

I have never read any Erpenbeck’s work but I have heard that same critique from others. Thank you for the kind words.

Onward to Nana!! And I am eagerly awaiting your thoughts on the Toibin books.
I read Sudden Death years ago and really enjoyed it. You Dreamed of Empires sounds even better! Can't wait to get to it
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Oh, thank you, Ros! And yes, the main character in Undiscovered sucked up all the oxygen in that story.
I share your excitement about James and Long Island. Both were so memorable. I listened to Colm Toibin talk on the NYT book podcast about his inspiration for both books and it made me love his work even more.
Ooh- I will look for that interview with Toibin. Thanks, Sonya!
Yes, this was a good interview!
I just finished the latest Maisie Dobbs. Tears were shed. 😢
I cannot wait!!
Glad you’re back.
Thank you! ☺️
Good mid year freakout! Looks like some really solid reads. James is coming up soon on my TBR and I am so excited to read it!
Thank you and I hope you like James as much as I did!

You clearly have great taste! 😉
Crooked Plow is interesting..
I’m looking forward to it.
I am curious to hear what you think of "Crooked Plow."
As much as I am to hear yours!
