You should change your filter every oil change unless you have a after-market metal filter then you just need to clean it with the proper cleaning solvent, the brand is your choice. You should not run your bike for five minutes low on oil. Just keep the bike upright tell all the oil settles and then check you window. Now bring your oil to the proper level run for a minute and check the window one last time.
never set your oil level on the side stand, it'll show low in the sight glass and you'll end up putting more oil then needed
