The early Christians were jews, a so called "nazarene sect", but the message arrived in other nations, as Jesus said to spread his Word. These people were not jews, but became Christians! That is why we are a separate religion, because God send his Son to save the whole world. The book Acts of The Apostles explains more of this. The phrase "Jesus did not start a new religion" is not quite right, as Jesus created his Church(beginning with the Apostles) and preached new things, not only the Jewish teaching. God bless!

Im Bangladeshi🇧🇩, I have many korean friends and most of em' follow Christianity. Even tho im Muslim, we are very close friends. Muslim and Christianity is almost same, just differs the god. In Islam religion, our god is Allah and he is the one and only. But in Christianity it's Jesus, which is our prophet in Islam. Islam is not the religion which is displayed on media (terrorism, extremism, unpeaceful) it is exactly the opposite. In our religion, it is haraam (Haraam means forbidden) to kill,harm anyone. It's haraam to hate someone based on their looks, religion, race. FYI there are extremists groups who are trying to defame our religion by promoting terrorism. I have found that in S. Korea, that most people are ; 1 more private about their religion ;2 MUCH more accepting of people of other religions, without judging of feeling the need to proselytize; 3 less prone to religious zealotry; 4 more prone to judge you on your actions, rather than your words; 5 put FAR less emphasis on their religion in their lives, or that of their friends, associates, and anyone else. I've had Korean friends 통일 that were Atheists, Christion, Buddhist, folk religion of some kind, a Confucian, a Shinto, and one that claimed jokingly to worship Baccus. Not one of them asked or cared what I "believed" they cared about what I did, and how I treated others.

Korean here, some sad news is that these religions do not respect each other... especially some radical christian societies in Korea. In Korea, we celebrate Buddha's birthday as a traditional national holiday, but there was an incident where some radical christians burst in the celebration and set fire on some temples and monuments... So the reputation of christianity in Korea is radically declining. And most young generation (10~30s) are mostly atheists.
dont say "especially" because there are bad people in all groups, hear me out. the reason you say "especially" is because christianity is the dominant religion in korea, which means there are more christians than other religious people. lets just say 1% of all people are bad, if you have 1000 people then only 10 people are bad, but if you have 1 000 000 people then 10 000 people are bad. its all about statistics. there are bad muslims in the middle east, but thats because islam is the dominant religion there, and since south korea has way less muslims than middle east or europe, way less stuff is caused by them. thats just probability.

1. Koreans are indifferent to religion (due to the influence of the Joseon Dynasty). Therefore, South Korea has a variety of religions that are called museums of religions. And Koreans are not interested in religion, so it is right to regard it as non-religious rather than atheist.

It was introduced 1,500 years ago and has been a state religion for 1,000 years. However, the Joseon Dynasty ignored Buddhism (=숭유억불).
3-2. Protestantism: Presbyterian Church is the majority and Methodist Church is the second denomination. It grew rapidly after the Korean War.
Protestantism image has been deteriorated since the 2000s (because of aggressive missionary work, a mockery of other religions and Catholics, sexual harassment by pastors, materialism, and collusion with politics). This negative image was maximized as Protestantism became the main culprit in the spread of COVID-19. Especially among the younger generation who are non-Protestants, the view of Protestantism is so bad that it's close to a con artist.
3-3. Catholicism: It is a religion believed by the elderly and middle-aged. Not as much as Protestantism, but there are young believers. The Catholic reputation is a little bit positive. It was introduced without missionaries during the Joseon Dynasty and 20,000 people were martyred. The Catholic Church contributed to the South Korean pro-democracy movement, but remained silent during the colonial period.
Digression. North Korea's Religious Situation
North Korea should not believe in religion (I'm not kidding). At least they are tolerant of Buddhism and shamanism. But if you believe in Christianity, you and your family will be taken to political prison camps or executed. Because the United States is a Christian country and above all, Christian faith is a threat to institutional maintenance.
For example, during the Korean War, many Protestants and Catholics were martyred. There is a case in North Korea where you and "your family" were taken to a political prison for possession of the Bible.
Currently, there are Catholic churches, Protestants, and Buddhist temples in North Korea, but they are just appearances.

As a Korean myself, I can tell practicing Islam in Korea has been very rare among Koreans, and it would be in the future as well. It's probably because of some negative stereotypes against the religion, but that doesn’t explain everything with regard to this matter. Actually, the overall number of religious people has decreased over the last few years. More and more Koreans don't go to church while still thinking of themselves as a Christian in their mind. One of the reasons for that would be some news that discloses some pastors involved in corruption or accused of sexual abuse, so they might think like “well, I believe in the Lord and Jesus Christ but have heard on some news about corruption found in church maybe once a quarter. I might feel better and safer at home.” I understand I can’t explain such a big issue enough with some sentences, but this is one of my thoughts and might help you understand why I am saying this. In the meantime, the current government (president Moon's democrats) dominates the media and pushes them to publicize/emphasize the negative aspects of church-related issues because quite a lot of Christians in the country have supported his rivalrous political party (a.k.a. a conservative party, pretty much like a republican party in the States). Even some politicians from the party were a pastor (or equivalent) such as the former president Lee Myungbak, who said to dedicate Seoul to the Lord during his election campaign, and Hwang Kyoan, who was the prime minister of the former president Park Geunhye government-he also served as the acting president for months since president Park had been impeached. One thing that makes me strongly think like that is the recent news coverage that keeps focusing on the number of new Covid infections found in churches on a pretty much daily basis while there's almost no news that covers the number of new infection cases found elsewhere like in temples or mosques. President Moon has been suppressing Christianity for the political reason. I can feel that.
