Similar to my w540. Mine has the 4900mq with 32 gb ram and a 500 gb SSD. I have a spare parts w540 that I plan to take the 3k screen from when I have the time. It also has the sensor for calibrating the colors.
I think it'll be pretty much maxed out although it could definitely take much more storage. Very nice machines for daily use and occasional higher end use although Haswell is kind of old now.
Nice, I was talking to someone about purchasing a W540 with a 3k display but they couldn't get it together enough to give me a price and actually ship. I would love to work on one and daily drive it in place of my T540p. Do you find you utilize 32GB of RAM? For me it would be more novelty. Does yours have the NVIDIA Quadro integrated GPU?
@@HaisteComputerRepair yes, it has the K2100M.
I want to start learning how to use 3d modeling software to design my own 3d prints for fun. So for now, I don't use a lot the ram. It's not a bad system at all!
@@Queso305 Very cool. I would like to test that out sometime. They aren't terribly expensive, so I'll think about it. Cheers.
Is it still far better from t470s in a long term?
Did ddr3 and Haswell procie can still survive the next 2-3 years? Thanks for the vid hope you can give me answer
I would say that yes, DDR3 memory will survive the next 2-3+ years. Still in 2023 you can run a system with DDR2 RAM quite easily. I would suppose it all depends on what you want to do with your device and if there is future driver support for it.
This is an excellent review. Thank you. Do you happen to know what my choices are in the cpu slot and you said its easy so I guess no soldering? Also is the screen easy to peel off the bezels?
The LCD Display Panel is pretty easy to install. I have a kind of clunky video up with me installing the 3K display panel assembly, but just the panel itself isn't too bad. Just the bezel, screws, carefully remove cable connection, install new panel. As for the CPU, you can swap it out. I installed a quad core i7 in my personal T540p. @@HaisteComputerRepair thanks very much, thats vert helpful.
I have been watching a lot of your Thinkpad stuff, will take a look for more.
@@retro_gamer_uk Excellent, thanks! The T540p will be similar to this, where I replace the T530 Panel. ua-cam.com/video/LSiwp-rmWe0/v-deo.html
@@HaisteComputerRepair Hey in trying to source a CPU at a good price that is a good improvement on what it already has. Do you have any sources or possibly spares youd sell?
@@retro_gamer_uk I usually source off of eBay as it's a bit rare for me to find older CPU's elsewhere. I bought one of these: www.ebay.ca/itm/125208637309
Price is a bit high, but options are low for buying.
Another question for you as this inspired me to do up my own T540p! The Nvidia 730m optional dedicated graphics… do you know how much better they make the laptop if mine is already being upgraded to a cpu intel i7 4800mq? Also from 4 to 16 gb ram and an ssd. Surely the memory being utilised by the integrated graphics (4600 HD) is better than the 1gb used in the nvidia?
Am I missing out?
The NVIDIA 730M Integrated GPU is better than the Intel HD 4600. So you are lucking out if anything having that option. Either option isn't great in 2022, but good enough. The i7-4800mq will be a nice boost from any version of the i5. Are you looking at a display panel as well?
@@HaisteComputerRepair thanks, I thought it would be better but how much better is the question for me as I assume the integrated graphics for the i7 4800mq are better than the i5 4300u etc. Although both are the 4600 HD Intel graphics, I thought perhaps theres less bottleneck or something. So maybe the 730m graphics is an upgrade, but in 2022 it probably wont be in real case scenarios because what I am doing now works great (basic browser games and work), but trying better games with either would probably suck. My theory is therefore that it wont really matter having it or not.
I would like a 3k panel, but ive only seen it for sale with a machine for like £190 (gbp). Maybe thats worth it, but I was looking for just the panel to install. Im also missing a backlit keyboard and only have a standard one, and no finger print reader but I can probably get a palm rest with one and install that?
@@retro_gamer_uk You will need to install a finger print reader board if there isn't one already in your laptop. Backlit keyboard is just a swap. A 3K panel is awesome, but hard to source. A 1920x1080 would be pretty awesome, too, and cheaper. The i7 and i5 options will have the same GPU and you're right, the i7 will work better in tandem. Let me know how the upgrade goes.
@@HaisteComputerRepair thanks thats useful insight. I wont bother with the fingerprint reader then as its not something I mind much about. I have 1080p but im guessing its still a TN panel as viewing angles are not great but its a good enough screen for me. Good to confirm better cpu can help graphics. Will let you know how it goes. I bought 2 more that had no hdd or ram for £55 and im currently putting the old ram into those and fixing them up to sell as working, so its been quite an inspiration learning about this kind of thing and fun too.
@@retro_gamer_uk That's awesome. With at least 8GB RAM and an SSD, the T540p is solid. Good luck with the resells, maybe you can start up little side hustle.
Hey Looking to Get A Lenovo ThinkPad T540p 15.4 i7-4600M 2.9GHz 16GB 256GB SSD-NVIDIA GT 730M, Wondering what the "Tunabilit-ies" are? and Also does it have Backlight KeyBoard?
Sounds like you might have a maxed out T540p. Backlit keyboard was an option and could be swapped in if the one you are looking at doesn't have one. Maybe 32GB RAM could be installed if you could source DDR3 SODIMM in that capacity. Less common, but does exist. I haven't tested 32GB in a T540p, though. Outside of that, a 1920x1080 panel at least. It was tough to source a 3K panel, but it was possible.
good video, I have the same one, but my laptap has a core I7 4710MQ
Thanks! That's still a good CPU. The 4 cores make a difference.
Hello!! I've ocassionaly buyed T540p i7-4700MQ with GT730 in mint condition (91%batt) and I am looking to find out if I did a good deal buying it for $80. I am surprised by its performance for a 10-year-old computer.
Now i'm sniping for W540 3K with 4910MQ and hope to buy for 100-120$
Is that in USD? Steal of a deal if it is!
@@HaisteComputerRepair Yes, USD ;). I'm wondering what to buy next. W540 i7 or T490 i5 for almost same price. T490 i think will be sold for 200$
@@zwyczajny2290 T490 has the benefit of 4 core 8 thread i5 and DDR4 RAM. Better integrated graphics. Less options for customizing, like the W540. T490 will have the CPU soldered on to the motherboard, so upgrades are only RAM and SSD's.
@@HaisteComputerRepair if i buy 3K W540 for 150$ max than i sold T540p but i'm affraid about power consumption of W540 with 4910mq😅.
in my opinion, the W540 is the closest to a workstation of all thinkpads ever created, plus it has a thunderbolt port that gives a lot of possibilities for further operation of external devices, and you can't forget about 4 ram slots...
I don't know if it's not too much for a laptop and if it needs it, but it's post-leasing equipment in the auction and anything can happen.
@@zwyczajny2290 I get most of my ThinkPads in auction as well. The T490 will have the USB Type C Thunderbolt as well: psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/datasheet/ThinkPad_T490_datasheet_EN.pdf
Where can I find a 3K display for this model?
Honestly, they are tough to come across for a good deal. I bought a T540p from an eBay seller and transplanted the panel to my own. I see them listed on eBay for $160-$200+ CAD. I was able to break even on mine (plus the i7 CPU and RAM) after selling five of my own refurbished T540p's.
I would like to upgrade my CPU. How difficult is that?
You'll have to take the system apart to remove the motherboard in order to do this. It's not too bad, but if you haven't done something like this before consult some guides and take care not to lose track of where things go when putting back together. I did a video, but it's not edited or uploaded, if it ever will be.
How about I use it for photoshop or Ai ? Did it work nicely ?
I would assume it would work reasonably well, though consider the system requirements cross referenced with what kind of work you plan to do. Light use? Heavy rendering?
@@HaisteComputerRepair Just for Ai and photoshop only.. okay thanks bro
@@jabbarumar8783 I mean what are you doing while using Photoshop? What you planning to do with Ai? This is the explanation I am looking for. There are a number of lighter things you can do with either, but if you're looking at more intensive work affecting the CPU and GPU it's something to think about: will this hardware keep up?
P540w charger watt consumptions?
Can you rephrase your question? I'm not sure what you are asking.

@@muntasir4k33 Where are you seeing this reading? Where are you downloading drivers from?
@@HaisteComputerRepair from nvidia
@@muntasir4k33 Hm, ok. So with the GT 9800m driver, that would be a mobile graphics driver for a laptop. Are you running Windows 10?
Can it run fortnite and h1z1(on low settings)smooth?
On lowered resolution you could probably get away with 30-50fps
Does it run gta 5 smooth
I wouldn't say smooth, no. But on lowest possible settings, maybe.
