Daleks in Manhattan - Deleted Opening Scene | Doctor Who Series 3

- Опубліковано 20 кві 2022
- The Doctor Who Series 3 episode 'Daleks in Manhattan' originally had a scene of the Doctor and Martha in the TARDIS immediately after the opening titles. However, because the episode was over-running, the scene was cut and we instead saw the duo arrive in New York straight away. This video attempts to recreate the original opening for the episode. Enjoy!

Wait this wasn't real? It looked great! ♥
Thanks very much! 😀
Wait what!? lol I was tricked lol
I'm surprised this was cut, it's actually quite a pivotal moment in Martha's arc.
I always did found it odd how The 10th Doctor offered Martha one trip to the past & future, but instead gave her one trip to the future & two to the past. This scene explains why. Shame it got cut
I actually prefer the cut that doesn't offer an explanation. I remember noticing that, and thinking it was really relatable. He came up with that "One past/one future" rule, but then he just got caught up in travelling with her and either forgot it, or just decided to be a bit generous. Maybe a mix of both.
Yeah it's really awkward and although I can see it playing out this way as they were both in awkward places at the time I always imagined it as him being like "so how did you find new York?"
"Well it wasn't real new York was it,"
"True you should of seen new York during the 30s, absaloutely beautiful...one more trip?"
I think it would've been much better for Martha to have just been a companion outright without this "one trip" nonsense, she more than proves her worth in Smith and Jones and all it really does is just waste time; either that or make Lazarus Experiment episode 4, because as it stands, it just looks like the show doesn't really like Martha and so takes half of her one series to make her a full time companion... and then she leaves after 3 stories and 1 story she's barely in.
Tennant was the only Doctor Who actor who made me completely forget he was acting. By far the best, in my opinion.
I agree! He'll always be my favourite Doctor.
I cannot agree more! David Tennant is my the very most favourite doctor. He's the best Doctor in my humble opinion. THE ONLY Doctor.
I would say Peter Capaldi also did a great job of fully transforming into The Doctor and made it so great it never felt like acting but an actual person
@@nickloschen2717 Capaldi is a brilliant actor, but nowhere near Tennant, in my opinion.
Actor of the Doctor....
I love this so much. I wish they kept it in. It feels so natural, and that's what I love about it. It gives them time to speak to one-another like actual people as opposed to being constantly on the run from aliens and fighting to the death. It's nice to have that subtlety. What I find great is how Martha is trying to say she wants to stay. Having a detour. It's clear she wants to continue travelling with the Doctor, especially with bringing up how he as no one to accompany him. And you can tell the Doctor wants that too. He just finds it difficult after losing Rose so suddenly and having Martha come onto him all the time. Overall, it's a big shame they let this scene go.
Omg it feels like been 2007 again first time seeing this makes me want 10 and Martha back on screen so much
Kinda wish this wasn't cut purely because of the "Long way round" line. Makes it more iconic for Ten to have said it to Eleven in Day of The Doctor
I really wish they had kept this. Not only is it a fairly pivotal moment for Marthas character but it also ties the two parter into the narrative through line of this first half of the season. It would have added so much to the sense that this has been one big long trip for Martha so far.
So martha is also going ‘the long way round’ She is so the best!
The “Scenic Route” as the Seventh Doctor once suggested
Martha has the unique honour of being the only new who companion that has had 5 consecutive stories that are more or less immediately after each other
Rose has wiggle room between end of the world and unquiet dead. Or UQD and aliens of London where she could potentially have gone on unseen adventures. Same in series 2. Donna, Amy, Clara also leave room for unseen adventures between episodes. As does Bill and those weirdos travelling with 13
But with Martha, episode 1,2,3,4,5 and if I remember correctly even the start of episode 6 (if I’m remembering correctly that it’s Lazarus experiment?) all occur one after the other with no wiggle room in between. Unless someone comes along and retroactively twists dialogue and events to change that.
"Those weirdos travelling with 13" 💀💀💀
The animated Infinity Quest, the Character Bios on the DVD release state that Martha is traveling with the Doctor for one more trip, which seems to set it before "The Lazarus Experiment".
@@OfficialSoraOkami yeh but that isn’t really official though is it just a fun side thing they crammed in.
I lost it at 'Those weirdos travelling with 13' 🤣🤣🤣 Man it's wild to think Chibnall could screw up the show so bad. Anyhow, addressing your observation about Martha, yes, she does hop on from one adventure to the next for the first five episodes of Series 3 and those were pretty rough adventures as well. She starts with being on the moon and almost dying of oxygen deprivation, then on the same night runs off with Ten to the Shakespeare code in the past where she meets those witch monsters. Chronologically the first two episodes happen one after the other, so it's one long day for her and she kind of comes out sane after experiencing two traumatic events that she can never talk to anyone else about.
I imagine she got a chance to get some shut eye before Gridlock, otherwise I would say Martha is literally made of steel and far stronger than Rose was during her initial days. Goes to think how things would have turned out different if Nine had met Martha instead of Rose.
Series 3 was so underrated. It had some amazing episodes! Especially human nature / the family of blood
It's one of my favourite series!
Daleks in Manhattan was the first episode I ever saw and I started DW when series 3 was airing so I have a soft spot for it. And I still think it has one of the best second halves like series 4.
Actually Series 3 has a better rating than Series 2. The Dalek two parter is the only weakest one from the lot and of course the space Jesus moment from the Finale which was just dumb.
This was a really sweet scene, and actually an interesting parallel. I've been rewatching some classic Who lately, with the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane. During their episodes, Sarah kept saying she wanted to go home and then the Doctor was the one trying to convince her to stay, promising to take her home and then "accidentally" taking detours, and oh, just one more adventure before you go? Not sure if it was intentional but a nice callback even so.
Damn it feels like I've stumbled on unreleased RTD stories with all these deleted scenes! xD
I felt like that when I rediscovered this scene!
Martha Jones is brilliant she brings out the humour in the Doctor's stories she was the only companion I think that made the Doctor feel better about himself she like Rose had feelings for the Doctor but it wasn't to be, and yet they were closer in someways as friends she was fantastic I suppose she would be back in the celebrations and taken a trip through time one more time it would be nice to have her meet the other Doctor's and it would be interesting to catch up with her? In my opinion the tenth Doctor was fun and heroic and made sense of every single story after all David Tenant was a huge fan and he brought the whole deal to the story a little of Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee and his father-in law Peter Davidson into the character of Doctor Who. Hope his in the celebrations a lot and he also meets Dona Noble again to? Has he been made a Sire it would be nice to see?
the doctor: You get just 1 detour!
well that was just a fucking lie then lol
I wish they'd left this scene in because it helps make the arc of series 3 make so much more sense; also it's a good character moment for the Doctor and Martha. I'm guessing it was cut for time considerations.
When the Tenth Doctor has more chemistry with his companion in a deleted scene that the Thirteenth Doctor has had with any of her companions over the course of three series…
Different time, different show. Although I do wish Jodie had a better writer overseeing her era.
The annoying thing about the doctor who fandom is you can go to any video about the show and see someone complaining about the 13th doctor. I agree with you, the 13th doctor isn't great, but why on earth are you commenting that on a video of a deleted scene from a different doctor, from 10 series ago?

@@senonimoustv2497 Can't blame the writing all the time. Capaldi had poor scripts but his acting elevated them. Whittaker is just a bad actor.
@@CorporalFriendlyShark Breaking news - Doctor Who has multiple eras and constantly bringing up and era you don't like in the comment section of a completely unrelated era makes you look weird
I’m glad this was cut honestly. I like the idea of it, and if it weren’t for the weird interruption thing I’d like this far more, but I think they get it across well enough in The Lazarus Experiment that things escalated.
Weird interruption thing? Personally I think this scene should have been kept in. I don't think the final episode makes it clear enough that this trip to 1930's New York was going the long way home.
@@DoctorBlueDW
Oh, the way that Martha and The Doctor interrupt each other by talking at the same time. To me, it feels rather unnatural and forced.
I think The Doctor and Martha saying that “things escalated” is enough for the viewer to understand The Doctor’s decision to leave her back on Earth. I don’t think we need a line in this episode about “the long way home”.
I actually find the interruption to be quite natural as it often happens in real life! I guess it depends on the viewer but I know that 10 year old me at least never quite understood why they went to 1930's New York when the Doctor only justified having a trip into the past and future. This scene would have made it clear that they were justifying another trip as a detour.
@@DoctorBlueDW Have to say, 12ish year old me never noticed. But it is strange how he felt he had to justify Gridlocked, as her last trip, and they then just did NYC 1930 without anyone saying anything, and the two acting as close as anything, only for the Doctor to be be like "home you go now" in Lazerus.
How did things “escalate” in your opinion? I dunno if I’m the only one thinking they had sex behind the scenes? Obviously I was young when I first watched this but now I’m older I’m beginning to think, in the doctor who universe, things “escalated” cause they had sex n stuff?😅
This is a lovely little scene, shame this was cut
Honestly Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of The Daleks is one of my favorite Dalek stories of the revival era
Mine too
This is great. I was always slightly confused why they just went here like she was officially a companion without mentioning it and then the next story went back to 'And you're back home.'
I've been looking for this for years! Thank you!
"Martha, have you met my friend? Try not to blink."
I really wish i had that console so i could just mess with it and feel like the doctor in the tardis
Great choice of song to close the video btw, transporter me to the confession dial just hearing it!
massive doctor who fan and never seen this before, this is wild! seeing more of my fave companion
Martha, have you met my friend?
Oh my God, that’s a giant weeping angel.
A great scene, and magnificent music by Murray Gold.
Such a cute scene
the long way home.
This is a nice scene, thanks for showing us!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Nice music but it fits an ending more than a start, really.
Interesting! I disagree to be honest but to each their own.
Thanks DoctorBlue!
My pleasure!
I had no idea this existed, thank you!
My pleasure!
Works a lot better without. I always got the impression they just got carried away and forgot the whole _"One trip"_ deal. Which is sweet.
Bruh why did they cut this out? this is a much better start.
I agree, it should have been kept in. It was cut purely because the episode was over-running sadly.
This explains so much!
well atleast they could reuse this deleted scene for a 10th doctor and martha return, I like that it could be possible to interpreted any way
It's a nice scene but I see why it was cut. I feel like you just naturally understand why they're still travelling together after that emotional scene at the end of Gridlock going into Manhattan. It's just not nice to see the Doctor constantly picking up Martha just to drop her again.
oooh! great scene, but i do understand why it got cut actually
How To Make Changing Past Extremely impossible
1. Invent Time Machine.
2. Travel To 22nd Century.
3. Invent a machine that can change probability use it to make probability certain that changing past is Extremely impossible Forever.
This should’ve been how the episode started it just makes so much more sense.
It always felt weird without it
I love being on my own but I feel sometimes when they leave it breaks my heart
I always wondered why they went to New York. Now I know the answer
It’s so weird seeing Ten standing still, slowly using the console instead of running around, doing YOGA poses to reach the controls. 0:55
I’ve never seen the beginning of this episode anyway, so this feels right
Just that 2 minutes was better and more believable than what we’ve got at the moment.
Was just thinking that. The show has fallen so far it's crazy
Why did they cut the long way home from 10 that would of hit different in looking back from the 50 year anniversary
I wish they kept that in
For broadcast, fair enough, it's an easy one to cut.
But absolutely should have been out back in for the DVD
Nice recreation
Cheers!
Love how the accent creeps through
God, she's gorgeous.
I can't say that I'm a massive fan of the Tenth Doctor's massive insistence that he should be alone; like maybe after Waters of Mars I'd get it, but by this point, he hasn't done anything. I understand he's upset over Rose, but it's like he forgot that he was only able to heal and move on from the Time War because he was with someone - ala Rose - but he's just not letting himself do it again. And it's not like this characterisation is ever dealt with as it's kinda forgotten about after Lazarus Experiment when he just lets Martha in full time, then he's just straight to wanting Astrid and Donna.
Its actually a real shame that this one was deleted
Gawd, I really hope this kind of incidental music and TARDIS console do NOT come back!
I wish they’d kept this scene.
I have an idea for how they can re vamp the show if they want to make it more like the mcu, have the doctor land on earth but as he's walking around he sees a gang of people fighting a dalek that kills them all and vanishes, just then they all regenerate into different people and stand up as if its perfectly normal.
Because in the universe he lands in that version of the doctor found out about the timeless child and firstly kills everyone on his home planet but then turns earth into a new galafray and changes the human dna to make everyone into time lords
I so hope Murray Gold comes back.
Anyone else notice the crack/smash in the top police box sign? above the door.
Daleks in manhattan
In another universe
Six sinesters in manhattan
I always wondered why the doctor went to Manhattan even though he said 1 trip(to the past and future)
I just want the camera to pan over the woman singing soprano in the corner...
no freaking way!!!!
you can go any where yet you go to Manhattan🙄
Who else loves this dalek story more than the season 4 finale one?
I definitely think this story is underrated but personally I prefer the Series 4 finale. It's so cool seeing all the RTD companions interact with one another and of course it has Davros in it!
Hmmm I’m glad this got cut tbh. I feel like this makes the 10th Doctor out to be really manipulative. He was, obviously, but I feel like this was just a bit 😕😕 for him. Like he couldn’t bare to ask Martha to travel with him more so he manipulated her into begging to stay🤔. Tens my favourite Doctor but his treatment of Martha was a bit 😬
Why was this deleted??
When I saw this, I was so confused why they had ANOTHER adventure after his one trip promise, then randomly ended up here.
This explains that!!!!
Fuck sake!!!
They should have kept this and cut the rest of it!
The only part of the story I enjoyed was the shifty Dalek looking over his shoulder before slagging off his boss.
God I loved Freema.
Me too!
1:08 am i the only one who thinks the doctor was gonna offer martha the chance to travel with him properly before she interrupted him
Why couldn't they of kept this scene? I think it was amazing 😁
I agree. Sadly though the episode was over-running so scenes had to be cut.
The lighting looks so off. I wonder if they cut this scene because something went wrong in the setup on the day. But it looks so much duller and darker than usual in the Tardis. Maybe it’s just the lack of grading as the cut the scene early.
The lighting looks off because the scene hadn't been treated in post production. I tried to fix the lighting as much as I could but sadly it's still dull and dark in places.
@@DoctorBlueDW I assumed so, but still felt weird to me, like the normal spotlights don't accent the faces well enough. I dunno, maybe because I've just come from watching a Capaldi episode where the TARDIS lightning design is immaculate. 😍
The long way home
...the long way round
...no you've got wet eyes!
this should have been left in
as always I wish they had kept it in, I mean its a two minute scene would it really have been so awful if they'd kept it in
This is how she got to New Amsterdam. 😂 😂
Why is the framrate higher than usual scenes?
It's probably down to how I exported it.
@@DoctorBlueDW ahhh I see
That makes more sense to add that scene but RTD was like nah fuck that
Proof positive that RTD doesn't always write good dialogue...
This wasn't written by RTD.
The story was written by Helen Raynor, not Davies.
Considering Russell wrote all the inter-episode continuity during his run and acted as script editor (in his EP role), I'm just going to stand by what I said. I should add, however, that I'm a big fan of Russell's writing and I wasn't trying to denigrate him. I was, in fact, denigrating people who think that he can never make a misstep, particularly in terms of dialogue. Have a great day.
I'm glad they cut this. Makes the Doctor seem like a Dick, why only give her two trips? I know he said in the first episode she got one trip, but because he never mentions it again, you assume he just grew to like her, and forgot what he said. Good to finally see this scene, but glad they cut it.
Are you doing more edits
I am indeed! Make sure you're subscribed so that you don't miss them!
Great will do
I'd forgotton how annoying as hell the constant background music was in modern Dr Who.
It was my decision to put the almost constant background music in. If this was in the finished episode, there may have been less of a reliance on music.
@@DoctorBlueDW Yes, I'm aware you will have put the music on, but it was still a reminder! 🙂
Thanks for the edit though - I don't recall having seen that scene before.
I can see why this was cut it's awful
Back when ‘heterosexuality’ was allowed to be shown in _Doctor Who . . ._ Sure miss those days!
Eve of the Daleks was literally about a heterosexual couple getting together.
This is the RTD era. Every episode had a gay moment. Even this story
