A tour of BIZERTE, Tunisia - The northernmost city in Africa بنزرت تونس

- Опубліковано 24 гру 2024
- Hi everyone! This is episode nine of my Tunisia series in which I visit Bizerte, the northernmost city not just in Tunisia but in continental Africa. It is located approximately 15 kilometres from the northernmost point in Africa, Cape Angela or Ras Angela as it is known in Arabic (the northernmost tip is known as Ras Ben Sakka).
The vlog stars off with me walking through the city centre through several local markets towards the port area of Bizerte. I immediately notice a lot of activity in the city with approximately 140,000 people, but noticeably lower noise levels than in places such as Tunis. This is indicative of the slower pace of life in this part of the world which is less touristy than other parts of Tunisia.
A local man then shows me directions to the port area and I walk past some graffiti and city art showing scenes of Bizerte as a coastal town and random colourful images. I then enter the port and is immediately struck by a giant boat or ship as well as the different colours of buildings which gives it an almost Venice-esque touch.
I then stroll around the harbour area and explore the walkway next to the fortified wall, after which I walk towards the other side and see several markets selling anything from household goods to cigarettes to - of course - shoes. I am struck by the amount of fruit and vegetables for sale and visit a large indoor fruit and vegetable market.
After visiting the markets, I walk back to the port area for one last time and then find my way to the louage station with the help of another local man.

@@raymondlagain5777 What happened there that upsets you?
Thanks for your raw depiction of the country. you are very nice and respectful of people , sir :) I wanted to point out the fruit sellers are actually offering you some fruits. It's not uncommon to be offered some food to visitors (even Tunisians get offered something when they visit another city or region) Only tourist related sellers or services will try to sell you their things (and sometimes hassles you) You did a great thing going to the real places where tunisians live and shops.
Thank you mon ami! I really appreciate these kind words and I'm grateful for your support for my channel. It's a shame I could not understand those fruit sellers otherwise I would definitely have tasted some fruit! I always try and keep my vlogs authentic and visit places the locals frequent. No fancy editing or over-the-top reviews, just "raw" material like you say!
Glad you enjoyed your walk around Bizerte. It's a cool coastal town, and the Phoenician ship is a random addition! I have been living and working here for the past three years researching the upcoming Bradt Travel Guide to Tunisia, which will be published in June 2023. One of the things I love about the country is the architecture, and Bizerte has some excellent examples, ranging from the Kasbak to some of the Art Deco French colonial buildings.
That is so cool that you are involved in the travel guide! Thank you for watching my videos and supporting my channel, without viewers like you this channel would not be possible :)
Hi , thanks for visiting my hometown city , the big boat is a restaurant and bar , unfortunately you missed to visit the medina ( old city of bizerte) as well as corniche , les grottes .. however its sad to see bizerte left behind and underrated
Yeah I missed a few spots (like I do in any place I'm sure) but saw the harbour and I was happy. To be honest, I did feel a little bit more under the spotlight with my camera in Bizerte so I tried to limit my movements.

You just passed by a lablebi sandwich restaurant. As tunisians when we visit Binzart this sandwich is a must, because the ordinary lablebi dish is very popular everywhere in tunisia but in Binzart they have the particularity of serving it as a sandwich.
Thanks for pointing that out my friend! I sure missed out but now I know for next time :)
I miss Bizerta! I was also there a couple of summers ago, ate from that same restaurant where the guys don't speak english and had one mint tea at that blue and white café. The cool thing about Bizerta is their cheap food especially fish for obvious reasons, I walked into that big market got myself the freshest fish, took it to the restaurant, told him to cook it for me and added a soda and fries, was 20% of what you would pay for it in Tunis. There was even a better view if you'd kept walking next to the Medina wall, afterwards there's the new modern Marina, but the old port view is also great! looking forward to your next content!
Hi Mouath! Thank you for sharing your interesting story about your food experience in Bizerte. It is a lot cheaper than what you would pay in Tunis (and perhaps other parts of Tunisia too). I'm sure there are lot of things I missed in Bizerte on my short visit but the old port was just so lovely to explore, I could spend hours just drifting there! Glad you look forward to my content, thank you for supporting my channel :)
Les tunisien préfère le français parceque nous les tunisien on comprend pas l'anglais nôtre langue officielle c'est le français salutations de Tunis Tunisie Farid
@@hamzaouimohamedhamzaouimoh6013 With that french of yours i wouldn't dare to speak ever again. who are you trying to kid! Tunisia's ONLY official language is Tunisian Arabic. Tunisians today especially the young generation speak English much better than French. La Tunisie n'est plus la Tunisie des années 60/70. Tunisia will gradually shift to English as soon as the younger generation takes over.
Amé este pequeño tour en Bizerta, hermosa ciudad.❤ 😊
Thank you Maggie! Glad you enjoyed it and cheers for watching :)

Another interesting walk Willie, The vegetable market place reminded me of the markets in Fiji. Thank you. Kiwi from Virginia
Would love to get to Fiji one day! Thanks for watching, as always :)
I just literally waiting for this video! Thank you for visiting our country and our city Bizerte ♥️
Hope you enjoyed your stay!
Fyi the big boat in the view port is just a restaurant 😅
Unfortunately we weren't there to show you the rest of the city. There are a lot of nicest places to visit!
Bonjour Ikram! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my content and for leaving this nice comment! A restaurant of that size and type is incredible, wish I knew that when I was there! Definitely a lot of nice places to visit in Tunisia and Bizerte is for sure one of them :)
It's great to have you visit my home town of Bizerta. I've been following some of your previous videos and wish I had known you were coming so I could have shown you around to some of the cool places. Maybe next time. In answer to your question, the 'giant boat' you're asking about is not actually a boat, but rather a private restaurant that's been permanently anchored in place.
Bonjour Ahmed! Thank you for getting in touch and leaving this wonderful comment - I really appreciate it! It is so interesting that the boat is actually a restaurant, I do think it adds a special touch the colourful old port. I will get in touch with you next time I plan to go to Tunisia - always great to meet local people and even greater to meet those who support my channel like you!
Bizerte m’y hometown I miss you soon this summer I´ll be there🇹🇳🇹🇳🇹🇳🇹🇳😘😘😘💖💐💐💐☀️🏖️🇹🇳🇨🇦🇹🇳🇨🇦
Thank you for your message! I really loved visiting Bizerte and Ras Angela :)
More colourful architecture and street markets! Great tour again, Willie, thank you. The harbour was very picturesque. I was trying to think what that huge ship would have been used for, then noticed some comments confirming it is a restaurant. It is certainly eye catching😊
Thanks Sheila! Many have commented that I didn't get to the medina or the corniche, but to be honest this was the one place in Tunisia where I felt a little uneasy filming. Maybe it is because they don't get as many tourists as some of the other places I visited. Nonetheless, I definitely enjoyed my visit there and could easily have stayed another day to just relax. I also have to admit - I was slightly disappointed when I found out the huge ship was merely a restaurant; it would have been a lot cooler if it served a historic purpose :) Appreciate all your support, as always
@@willieexplore do you know, I did think that some people seemed to be more "aware" of you than I have seen before in your vlogs. But as you say, probably not used to tourists filming (or a man talking to himself..🤷🏼♀️😊).
@@sheilam4525 definitely :)
The multicoloured buildings remind me of Bo-Kaap in Cape Town. Wonder if there is a connection. Thanks for the video, Willie!
A bit of colour in architecture certainly adds an interesting edge to any place, Bo-Kaap and Bizerte included!
@@willieexploreBizerte is my home town. Born in Germany and I have been to Bo Kama last year! Great video!

The connection is the southern point in Africa : Cape of good hope in South Africa and the northern point is Cap Blanc near Bizerte Tunisia.
@@Asly65 I was also at CApe of hope!!!! Even bought a key chain as a souvenier!! Didnt knew that this was the south point of Afrcia and Bizerte the north!!!!! Amazing!
Nice one Willie! I think this was my favourite of the places in your Tunisia series so far. Authentic, less touristy and less people trying to sell you stuff! Looked like a nice, chilled place!
Oh and I agree on the language aspect, although even if you do speak it you can pretend you don't 🤣
Cheers mate! It was a pretty relaxing outing compared to some of the others, that's for sure. The colourful buildings in the harbour almost made me lazy haha!

Thank you very much Jim! Definitely felt like a little Venice in the north of Africa. All the best my friend!
Great video and an amazing city. Highest point in Africa 💚🌍
Thank you my friend, what a beautiful part of the world! Cheers for watching :)
Willie baie intressant. Was nog nooit in Tunisie dit lyk of dit die moeite werd is! Groete.
Ja Tosca, hierdie was baie spesiaal. Ek het nie ver van Kaap Agulhas grootgeword nie, so om by die verre noorde in Afrika te kom was 'n belewenis. Groot kultuurskok maar dit is eintlik merkwaardig hoe eenders die natuur by die noordelikste en suidelikste punte lyk (as jy my Cape Angela video sien sal dit sin maak). Tunisie beslis die moeite werd!
Really great job

Bizerte is a beautiful city. There are beautiful nature places. Why didn't you photograph it, the mountains and the sea, and there is also the highest peak in Africa🇹🇳❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for watching! I did do a vlog about Cape Angela and on the way there I did see some beautiful nature - which bizarrely reminded me of the landscape near the southernmost tip of Africa.

Thank you so much for those suggestions! I hope to travel to Tunisia again and will aim to visit them :)
Can you please give a piece of advice what place of Bizerte would be more comfortable for a western citizen to stay in Bizerte for a long time?
Hi! Sorry but I did not stay in Bizerte, so I am not able to give recommendations. Thanks for watching though!
Lovely walk around the city ! Welcome and thank you for the visit
(Also, I highly recommend you to check Matmata (barbarian town in the south) you'll see the underground houses and discover native north africans traditions)
Cheers for watching and for leaving these comments, it is great for interaction! Definitely places in the South I want to visit at some point and I'll check this one out :)
02:49 Yup, that's the epitome of that Tunisian hospitality. I miss Tunisia!
Are you planning on visiting the south? (or if your trip in Tunisia is over, did you visit the south?)
Btw, what do you film on? I love the quality of your videos! Keep it up.
Thank you so much for watching! I enjoyed your Tunisia series a lot. I didn't go to the South on this trip, but I definitely plan to return one day and do a Tunisia series 2. Maybe I'll let you know closer to the time if you wanted to join and collaborate?
I use a GoPro Hero 9 and shoot on 5K 30FPS. The video editor I use do convert it down to 1080p but perhaps a "higher quality 1080p" due to the shooting settings?
Safe travels
@@willieexplore Oh yeah, totally. I do the same. I think it's in 2.7k and I edit on a 1080 timeline. But that was with a GoPro hero 7.
