They were a monster band. Like the Sweet, they are known for hit singles, but the live footage is amazing: very loud, almost proto-metal glam bands.

Great stuff. It's so interesting how the seemingly accidental encounters in life can lead to something very special. Dave paints a good picture of the early days.

Thanks for uploading this. (And Noddy if you ever get to read this..... your fans are aware how many hits you had/records you sold - how much you charted! And believe me, we did notice when you were missed off the TOTP thing too!) xx

They should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. A lot of their music was before my time, but they are such a great band.

Too good for that and apart from the usual suspects ie Beatles, Clapton, Lennon, McCartney it's almost an exclusively american club.

@user-dd8sy8tz7o I've just counted. 366 inductees 52 british 8 other which leaves 306 american. Don't forget some of those brits are in there twice. In a band and solo. Considering that for such a small island we have had a massive impact on popular and rock music for decades so convincing me that the RARHOF isn't biased towards american acts is going to be pretty difficult. It took Judas Priest 50 years to get there, and Maiden are so pissed off about being ignored they've told them to shove it!

I was always amazed that slade never played live aid they would have stole the show and may have given queen a run for there money! They certainly would have out shone 90% of the band's that performed that day

Without doubt your right, as a young musician i was introduced to the Slade Alive album and it knocked me out, because they were caught up in the "Glam" era they were sometimes mistaken for a Musically lightweight band churning out "Anthems" but insiders in the business knew what a fantastically talented live band they really were, as Ozzy Osbourne said not that long ago "The best Rock voice out there is without doubt Noddy Holder

The Sun that morning printed the list of artists playing that day. It said Slade. I was overjoyed! Unfortunately it was a typing error it should have said Sade....
Imagine if they did play? Rocking All Over The World would have been forgotten about and Queen? Slade would have blown them off the stage. Probably been the end of Mercury and his mob.
Maybe that's why they never got asked.

Merry Christmas everyone is of course a good song and as traditional as turkey and the queen's speech and I'm sure noddy enjoys the royalties, however it probably didn't do them any favours in the long run as it's all they seem to be remembered for unless like myself your a real slade fan, Merry Christmas everyone is played to death for one month of the year but I can literally count on one hand how many times I hear other slade hits on the radio throughout the year, incredible when you consider they outsold every other band and artist in the 70s

    • @fus149hammer5
      @fus149hammer5 Рік тому

MXE might be all they are known for today amongst the uneducated but Nod and Jim aren't too fussed. Half a million quid each every year in royalties has paid for Noddy's mansion and no doubt Jim has a nice home as well but Dave and Don get naff all as they aren't the songwriters hence they still do the rounds of the pubs and clubs trading (badly) on past glories.

  • @fus149hammer5

Gaz Top might have been a big Slade fan but he came to one of the fan club do's in London after making this doc and proved to be such an arsehole he was politely asked not to come back in the future. He spent most of the night shooing away people who just wanted to chat because he had "to take calls" on his new mobile phone. He genuinely felt that as the band weren't in attendance HE was the
big name. The only important things that night was Slades fans and the music.
    And the beer.

They should have been offered a spot at liveaid. After all it was just after two very big hits in run runaway and my oh my. Typical of the industry to ignore their talents. But good for Slade in still giving royalties away from their super do you believe in miracles single just before Christmas 1985 despite the earlier snub. They are made of the right stuff our boys.

I always liked Slade but they were a 'skinhead' band gone popular. Sure it's great with the internet and hind sight but at the time that was the stigma. How could you take such a cross over serious? In those days, no internet, conjoining thought, it was all word of mouth and last month's melody maker. Stupid act's die hard and that skinhead shit did them bad for since forever. Which is funny if you consider the number of skinheads who attended Deep Purple concerts. In 2020 folks can change with ease just like in photoshop, in the old days you had to use your own paint, so silly prejudices lasted because there was no 'Cntrl Z'. You could love Slade but you couldn't shout it cos it wasn't cool ... you could say Noddy sounded better than Lennon but then you'd end up in a fight as usual :-)
