Marcus W there is no plans to give either Queen Elizabeth class carrier missiles, despite the Mod acknowledging it leaves the carriers vulnerable to modern anti ship cruise missiles. Also the Mod does not have any plans currently to build any more carriers once Prince of Wales is finished, this is largely due to the fact the Royal Navy will currently only operate one carrier at a time and the navy is facing serious funding and manpower issues.
@@Marcus51090 1: They are called the 'Queen Elizabeth class', not the 'Royal class'. 2: The Royal navy list CWIS as the only anti aircraft weapons system fitted aboard the Queen Elizabeth class, none of the 3 anti aircraft missile systems which are in service, Seawolf, Sea Viper or Sea ceptor are announced for fitment to either of the Queen Elizabeth class carriers. 3: Releasing information related to defence is a serious criminal offence so I doubt that if you are in a position to actually see an order sheet for equipment that you would be stupid enough to disclose that infromation prior to an official announcement.
I was just rewatching this, and I noticed that this vessel has one to two extra outriggers, that look just like the tower housing the ships light railgun. This leads me to the conclusion that this ship has the possibility of being equipped with one to two extra light rail guns. This would perfectly minor the Donnager class as it also has two extra hard points capable of mounting more rail guns.
Spacedock, any plans to revisit the Donnager Class? Now that it seems you have access to some studio art and model renders. I would love to see an updated one.
This expanse series of his is directly supported by the creators of the show. I think they're supplying him with most of the concept art and information about the universe. I don't think some of the photos he's showing here are possible to find anywhere else, but I might be mistaken.
I would love that instead the half made Start Citizen we have a game based in The Expanse. The combat would be similar to a space Silent Hunter. The ship model are outstanding and I have the feeling that this video have more detailed info and quality, in line with the status of official cannon.
Didn't we see them in season 2 and 3? I could be mistaken but I think that looks very similar to the ship Bobby lands on earth in, and the ship that carries her to the ring station.
I love how the aesthetics and designs of these ships are so much like Halo. Not only does it give a real world look to it but it make me think that this is how ships looked like in Halo during the time period.
Halo's ships look NOTHING like these. Sure they're angular and blocky and have big thrusters in the aft, but the design sensibilities of UNSC ships are too, shall we say, cartoony or "futuristic". Plus, they're not office tower style ships, with decks perpendicular to thrust. I'm pretty sure the UNSC has artificial gravity of some sort.
These ships are far better design than halo. Halo is 500 years in the future and their ships are barely as capable as these ships given their time to develop. The only thing they have on them is power. If this series Mars had 500 years like halo, their ships would make halo look like bootleg buckets.
@sombodi200: "Barely as capable"? What? Expanse ships only seem more capable than UNSC ships because the enemies that Expanse ships have to fight have roughly the same equipment. In Halo, the UNSC fleet was completely outnumbered, outgunned, and outplayed by the Covenant. If a CCS-class battlecruiser slipspaced into the Expanse, it could annihilate humanity's entire combined fleets. Here's how: Launch plasma torpedoes. Human PDCs try to shoot it down, but a ball of plasma can't be destroyed. Plasma torpedo hits a Donnager battleship. It instantly dies. A CCS-class has six plasma launches every minute. Humans launch nuclear torpedoes. Most of them get melted almost as soon as they leave the tubes by precision pulse lasers. Nuclear charges will EMP a Covenant shield, so the energy shielding is a nonfactor, but the hull would take several nukes. The only way I can see the battlecruiser being taken out is if they somehow get a nuke in underneath the shields while the shields are still up and running. Keyes did that in the Battle of Reach - the shield contains the energy of the nuke, which bounces around inside the shield instead of dissipating, utterly destroying the target. Electronic warfare wouldn't work at all, because unlike the UNSC they don't have AIs to wage cyberwarfare at anything like a level playing field. Actually now that I think about it, the entire fleet would probably get hacked and self-destructed immediately by superior Covenant tech. Granted, it's not really fair to compare these universes, as the Expanse has a far greater attention to scientific detail. Covenant and UNSC ships have artificial gravity and reactionless drives.
@armorhide406: UNSC ships are a weird case. Whatever handwavium engines they use, they don't produce any thrust on the occupants of the spaceship. Before the Great War, human ships would have rotating sections in the middle for sleeping quarters and other such things that require gravity. When going into combat, those sections would stop spinning and be locked in place. The rest of the ship is zero-G. During the Great War, it was discovered that Covenant ships had artificial gravity systems, and these were some of the first systems reverse-engineered by humanity. The Pillar of Autumn was the first mainline warship to be equipped with them, and after the war all ships had them by default as they decreased in cost.
literal sarcasm Oh I know, but it's just that Space is FAR better imo. That and most Fascist governments made in Mussolini's style actually fucking work, not Hitler's though. He is a fucking madman who's book is literally just a bunch of his ravings while Mussolini's is actually a proper book.
literal sarcasm Yes, but that doesn't mean his regime didn't have some effectiveness. It brought most of Italy together and killed or kicked out the Commies there. Plus, if Mussolini didn't have plans to make ANOTHER Roman Empire (There's been like five, stop doing this!) he might have actually survived.
There should be another version designed specifically for ship to ship combat. It doesn't have dropships, but has 3 medium railguns, 2 more PDCs and maybe couple of aft-oriented missle launchers. This would be a heavy cruiser, purposefully built to take Truman class one on one.
PDCs or Point Defense Canons are guns whose primary purpose is to destroy incoming missiles before they hit the ship. Kinda like the Phalanx CIWS that the U.S. navy uses. Here 1:28 you can see them being used at close range as weapons (something that's extremely rare in this sci-fi series). As for why it only has one rail gun. I guess the designers of the show just wanted to add a little asymmetry to the ship.
The ships in the Expanse universe look like a good match to the “new” Battlestar Galactica universe ships; a strategy board game pitting the MCRN (?) against the Cylons would be interesting, to say the least!
Dank User I hate hyping, but spacedock has not failed me so far an infact helped unite us to save the expanse. I'm not as far as hyped, but I am looking forward to it.
Bit of a typo in the specs, there's actually 14 PDC's instead of 12. One each per engine pod, one behind the railgun pedestals port and starboard and another ventrally. At the front of the ship, there are two dorsal mounts with two more to port and starboard with the last gun mounted just forward of the drop ships.
Argasy Argasy2 I would love that instead of the half made Star Citizen we have a game based in The Expanse. The combat will be very similar to a space Silent Hunter.
what do you mean there's nothing more, there's still plenty a ships (and stations) he can do especially since he's creating most of the lore independently
I love how the show demonstrates that this strategy of the MCRN is only good for limited warfare. In all out total war, they will lose to earth's cheaper but mass produced ships.
Golden states in the books the un fleet drills and simulations before he was discharged had the un lose every time unless they hit Mars fast and end the war quickly. Come season 5 or maybe the latter part of season 4 you should see what even a small part of the mcrn fleet can do to earth and its territories.
A lot of Mars strategy seems to be built around the idea that Earth just doesn't have the political will for total war, and Mars has no desire to conquer Earth, so it's all about limiting the UNN's ability to project their power past Luna, and inflict losses that Earth can't accept if they try.
I had one of these ships but, because it has a large carbon footprint I traded it in for the latest Rocinate Class Light Frigate (was corvette class but with the light rail-gun and new proto-molecule armour it's shifted up a class) which allows me to hop around the solar system in style and safety... if anyone needs a lift to the Belt I've got room for a few travelers with light baggage or 1x power armour.
Anyone else wonder why they put the PDC for the chariot type dropships on the *top*, as opposed to the bottom. Unless it travels 'upside down' and flips in the final phase wouldn't there be a huge blindspot underneath?
Lars Hei Perhaps, but at that point the payload is already disembarked and the dropship has done its job. Maybe I'm thinking of it more from a contested beachhead pov than just establishing a temporary AA bubble.
That’s a really cool design with the exception of the breaching pods. Are cables actually effective in space considering what we know about the weapons Compliment of many ships. You’d have to get within about a km of a ship to use them, and you’d get blown out of the sky by rail guns or PDCs at that range
think it's assumed that if a Scirocco is that close, the Gunners on the other ship are gonna be a little busy at that point plus the Scirocco itself would likely have focused on nailing the PDCs in the particular area they're planning to send the boarding party at.
we see breaching pods used to board the Donnager in season 1, yeah some of them got shot down but most still hit, probably because the ships were so close to begin with (CQB)
Unlike the Leonidas , Truman or Donager this is a heavy warship that can pull maneovers.. so they probably have more maneovrability than the UNN equivalent or heavier ships and can simple move faster pointing her railgun at the target.. While UNN Ships usually have to remain "still" or drift to fire theirs
Railguns have to be powered as a pre-fire and in the show take some decent power. Having 3 railguns wouldn't mean much if you didn't have the power to charge all 3 simultaneously or in quick succession. Plus there is still Newtonian physics, so every launch would impact the ship's moment, causing greater strain on the ship's engines to compensate.
I wonder if this thing could take on a Leonidas class battleship? I think the Leo is heavier, but it's also implied to be a mediocre design with outdated technology, even by UNN standards, and if I recall correctly, I think a Scirocco class vessel was implied to pose at least some threat to a Truman class dreadnaught. One of the UNN officers on the Agatha King (Truman class) said they could probably beat the lone cruiser but would likely sustain at least some damage in the process.
Question: Do any of the factions (MCR, UN, Belt) posses any dedicated carriers? Like from the keel up specifically meant to carry large amounts of strike craft.
It's still the closest thing we've seen to a carrier even if it was a mission specific one off. Besides given how the expanse has working point defense fighters would be suicide hence why they needed all the decoys.
prob with strike craft in space combat is the sheer distances involved. you'd honestly be more likely to see a Carrier in a Hard Sci-Fi setting as being one that drops craft into atmo from low orbit for ground or atmospheric combat.
Why do more small ships not have railguns? "Small" being Rocinante size. The Roci gains a railgun off the commercial market (???), which only adds more questions
I honestly don't know why the expanse is not dominated by drone carrier ships with manned escort ships. The strength of space combat in the expanse is a long-range torpedo salvo with rare and ill-advised CQB, So I dont know why ships that control dozens/hundreds of torpedo armed drones are not the most dangerous weapon for a fleet.
small vessels won't have enough range, acceleration and ammunition. for huge vessels adding humans doesn't make them significantly larger. its the same reason we don't have drone fighter planes / bombers, while technically its possible.
Let's ignore Burnside's Zeroth Law of space combat (Science fiction fans relate more to human beings than to silicon chips) for a moment. Combat drone slaved to a mothership suffer from time lag, and the possibility of jamming. The control ship would need to close in to a terribly vulnerable distance that neglected the purpose of a separated command ship in the first place. You'll either need crew on board or made it fully automated AI. And admit it. No one trust fully automated AI without human oversight.
Also, why is shipping a manned endeavor? I know the story couldn't have happened if the future crew of the Rocinante weren't hauling ice on the Canterbury, but realistically you could just strap a couple thrusters to a big chunk of ice and launch it toward the buyer.
I'm surprised that the Scirocco-Class only has one railgun. Wouldn't that offset it's mass distribution and mess with the flight characteristics of the ship?
You're right, it isn't. For aircraft, the issues relate to lift and weight. In space, you have to worry about how mass is distributed for the simple reason that unbalanced mass will skew the direction in which a spacecraft is pushed if the thrust isn't pushing on the relative "center" of the craft. Think of a kayak that only makes use of oars on the left side. The thrust you create results in a constant right turn. By the same token, a 747 that only uses its left turbines would experience a similar constant right-turn problem.
To be fair, you could just vary your thrust slightly, or use some form of ballast to balance those flight characteristics. Simply locating the rail-gun opposite a relatively dense component on the other side of the ship would offer an equal mass distribution (Assuming the rail-gun is particularly mass-y itself.
I'd like to a see a modification to a space strategy game (maybe Nexus: The Jupiter Incident) to let us pit these ships against each other how they would be used in the show.
You can partially replicate the ships in Children of a Dead Earth. They won't look anywhere as close to what they appear on the show, but the fight can get pretty close to what we see in the show.

"WHAT DO WE FIGHT FOR?" "MARS!"
Hi I was wondering if you are going to do a break down on the MCRN GOLIATH POWER ARMOR I haven’t seen anything about that yet .Than You shawn
Love this ship
Supreme Commander theme = Instant like!
I love the expanse and all it’s ships so these videos are excellent. Think you’ll cover the ships of the free navy like the Pella?
Love this ship to bits. Is it me or do those breaching pods seem way too big to be single occupant?
Can you do a info brief on the MCRN GOLIATH POWER AMOR? Thank You
Scirocco Scirocco, where have I heard of that?
"SCIROCCO PAPTIMUS"
scirocco's a name of a wind
The Scirocco class assault cruiser looks awesome, but why one railgun not three railguns?
Power and mass dictates the armaments in space.
Unlike the Leonidas , Truman or Donager this is a heavy warship that can pull maneovers.. so they probably have more maneovrability than the UNN equivalent or heavier ships and can simple move faster pointing her railgun at the target.. While UNN Ships usually have to remain "still" or drift to fire theirs
because it has Torpedoes that can obliterate a freaking moon?
Railguns have to be powered as a pre-fire and in the show take some decent power. Having 3 railguns wouldn't mean much if you didn't have the power to charge all 3 simultaneously or in quick succession. Plus there is still Newtonian physics, so every launch would impact the ship's moment, causing greater strain on the ship's engines to compensate.
damn good as always love the expanse and cant wait for season 4! i hope the Sojourn comes out soon dieing of anticipation
Wish you did more of these
I wonder if this thing could take on a Leonidas class battleship? I think the Leo is heavier, but it's also implied to be a mediocre design with outdated technology, even by UNN standards, and if I recall correctly, I think a Scirocco class vessel was implied to pose at least some threat to a Truman class dreadnaught. One of the UNN officers on the Agatha King (Truman class) said they could probably beat the lone cruiser but would likely sustain at least some damage in the process.
Please do an episode on the stealth ships from The Expanse
Question: Do any of the factions (MCR, UN, Belt) posses any dedicated carriers? Like from the keel up specifically meant to carry large amounts of strike craft.
Not really but during the free navy story arch the unand mcrn fleets jury rig one from an old ice hauler but that's about it.
hmmm but that was for a specific mission and most of the vehicles were drone decoys.
The Donnager isn't a dedicated carrier, but it's ability to carrier multiple strike-craft is a big part of its role. Otherwise no.
Want the new OPA patrol craft done!
Was that Supreme Commander's soundtrack around the 2:20 min mark?!
yep. UEF.
I CANT WAIT FOR SEASON 4 AND THIS
love the supreme commander music.
Could you please do laser vs railgun which is the better weapon.
Why is there Supreme Commander music playing in the background of this video?
Simple. If the enemy hacks your drones, you are fkd.
Torpedo in expanse have extreme range and acceleration, and don't need drone to carry them.
Also, why is shipping a manned endeavor? I know the story couldn't have happened if the future crew of the Rocinante weren't hauling ice on the Canterbury, but realistically you could just strap a couple thrusters to a big chunk of ice and launch it toward the buyer.
So is this the vessel type Marco has as his flagship in series 5 (Nemesis Games?)
Sorry, cannot remember every Detail from the Books. In which one does this Ship appear?
these ships are all in the show, I don't know if a lot of these are even mentioned in the books
They need to make an expanse game
I'm signing up to join the MCRN. I want to do my part.
Love Expanse !!
Please can you make vidéo on the stealth ship of Jules Mao ?
I'm surprised that the Scirocco-Class only has one railgun. Wouldn't that offset it's mass distribution and mess with the flight characteristics of the ship?
it's a spaceship, not an aircraft.
The swiss army knife of space combat right there folks
Are you planning on having comics of the Sojourn along with concept art?
I'd like to a see a modification to a space strategy game (maybe Nexus: The Jupiter Incident) to let us pit these ships against each other how they would be used in the show.
You can partially replicate the ships in Children of a Dead Earth. They won't look anywhere as close to what they appear on the show, but the fight can get pretty close to what we see in the show.
