I think John secretly writes all the horrible puns and just blames them on Meredith.
HI!!!
Fancy meeting you here. :D
Oh you guys! :)
"What do Dick Cheney, Hillary Swank and Johnny Carson all have in common? Very little except they all lived in Lincoln Nebraska."
Another thing they all have in common, *none* of them are Dick Cavett.
Pictured: Dick Cheney, Hillary Swank and Dick Cavett
I wonder if Dick Cavett ever lived in Lincoln Nebraska?
Re the three people who lived in Lincoln at some point in their lives: the pictures show Dick Cavett, NOT Johnny Carsson!
I love when he blames Meredith for bad puns.
I was worried Montpelier's fact would be that it's the least populous capital or that it's the only capital without a mcdonalds. But you chose the cute fact about the valentines phantom instead, and you even pronounced Montpelier right. I am pleased.
If only he could've pronounced Pierre right. South Dakotans pronounce it 'peer'
Stephen Cody
dude, the population of Montpelier is just under 8,000.
Thanks, Colt S, for wasting a segment with a question that could've easily been answered with a calculator.
"keep austin weird" is also my motto (my name is austin btw)
When he was saying termite, I was thinking, "What termite?"
And then he showed the picture.
We call it The Big Blue Bug XDD
Fact about Albany: Shows picture of NYC. Great job guys. Great job.
Just so you know John, the Concord in New Hampshire, as well as the Concord in Massachusetts, are both pronounced like the word 'conquered.'
I was about to point that out, but figured I'd scan down and see if anyone else did.
YES, thank you. I grew up in Concord, MA and this is probably my number one pet peeve.
As soon as John said "Helena, Montana," I got Hank's Helena, Montana song stuck in my head.
I gotta say, I have adored this show for a VERY long time, but then I read The Fault in Our Stars. I gotta say, I love it, but YOU MADE ME CRY!
All right, no need to scold Meredith twice in one video. :P
Here is an interesting fact about Rhode Island: We are a state, not an island off of New York. You would be surprised how many people think we are Long Island.
I like how John quickly pronounces "Mental Floss" as "Menopause".
I just noticed that John went in alphabetical order...
Well... almost. Montana was done like fourth to fit in with the pumpkinville thing
Surprised he didn't mention Montpelier, VT as the only state capital without a Mc'Donald's.
I have only lived in two states. Those two states: Montana, and Arizona. Both considered Pumpkinsville for their capital names. It is a sign!
arizona doesn't have pumpkins...
Metaknightmare217 Unfortunately they turn to ash after several seconds
true...
I too have only lived in two states: Washington and Colorado, the only two so far to legalize recreational marijuana usage. It is a sign!
as a Little Rock resident, i feel compelled to add that the Bridge also is host to local events, such as the upcoming Big Damn Blues Festival.
+Evelyn Gleason One of my favorite parts of heading home from playing a show in Little Rock is seeing the Big Dam Bridge.
Montpelier VT is also the only state capital without a McDonalds
I love this channel! It is very informative and interesting to watch. I found this channel from the life hacks debunked videos. :)
The Harrisburg capitol is the handsomest building I've ever seen, it's amazing.
More like gaudy.
I too thumb you for Bubs.
q306005 ***** Nice to see some people other than the 7 year olds who don't know who Bubs is.
mintyicecream7 What!? But everybody knows Bubs! His name Cornbread. If he had thumbs, he'd be sticking them in his armpits right now... ew...
Okay, sorry. When I see an opportunity to quote H*R I can't help myself.
q306005 My old avatar used to be Bubs from the 100% Original Bubs "If I had thumbs I'd be sticking 'em up my armpits right now!".
Thank you for writing the fault in are stars John loved the book and can't wait the see the movie :)
Now I just wanna do a Waldo cosplay and take a picture in Waldo Park
Meredith definitely missed out on this portmanteau: The Boston Molassacre!
That pronunciation of Concord.
AND they throw biscuits in to the crowd at Biscuit games!
Haha! We have the "handsomest building ever"! Go Teddy!
Taft NEVER got stuck in a bathtub. That's a myth.
nja122890 proof?
Heu John, Did you know thta in Oklahoma there is a town called Okay?
Okay,OK
TFIOS!!!!
Also, there are 620 people living there. So 620 people are Okay, OK.
On hot summer days some people claim they can smell molasses whilst walking through the streets of Boston
John! You should do 52 facts about the 13 provinces and territories of Canada!
Am I the only one who hears "Thanks for watching menopause" at the end of these videos? =P
Tony McModeNut i do every time
concord isn't pronounced like it's spelled, it's pronounced "conquered"
Thank you!
I'm a New Hampshirian haha
Uuriu So am I at heart, even though I no longer physically reside there.
Ummmm no.
www.google.com/search?q=define+concord&oq=define+concord&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.2191j0j7&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=125&ie=UTF-8

wow that video i found is dumb as bricks, i just youtube searched "concord nh" and watched the first like 17 seconds haha but watching past then.. sorry for posting that hahaha
Yay back to the future reference!!!!!!!!! Soooooo happy!!
"Meredith… What did I say about puns."
-John Green in almost every Mental Floss episode
hey, when you guys going to do europe, do it or i shall continue to use bad speling and punctuation:
I'd keep an eye out Mental Floss. Jorvikson accidentally misused a colon in lieu of a period.
im kinda tired of all these all american facts. could you guys make something a bit more international. i love the format
ditto
I totally agree. I understand mental floss is an american company. and the facts are interesting. but verity in the places would be nice
Series of this please! Or even just a sequel.
OMG! I JUST PUT 2 AND 2 TOGETHER! YOU WROTE THE FAULT IN OUR STARS. IM GUNNA CRY! I'M READING THE BOOK NOW AND I HAVE BEEN SUBSCRIBED SINCE JANUARY. WOW! :) #AWESOME #THEFAULTINOURSTARS
UM I just learned that Augusta is the capital of Maine and not Portland.
***** i'm from Maine too!
Speaking of Portland... I live in Portland Oregon and there isn't a single car downtown without a bumper sticker saying "Keep Portland Weird." Where did doggone Austin come from!?
***** I was born in Waterville but i live in Belfast now.
Most likely Portland should've been the capital of Maine and deserves to be the state capital and maybe Bangor, not that piece of shit welfare dependent town with a capital building called Augusta.
Seconds in a year? That's the question?! WHIP OUT A CALCULATOR YO! There's more interesting facts for them to let us know about. >_
ive been to the Banjo Muesuem in OKC. we went as a joke and ended up LOVING it! they have a huge collection of "fancy" banjos, and that super expensive banjo is gorgeous!
I am glad that there is more to Utah then green jello facts haha. Thank you :)
Another fact for Austin, Texas is that the Texas state capitol building is bigger than the Capitol building in Washington D.C.
"...doesn't have a crack, because crack is wack." -John Green
The Edgar Allan Poe play "Politian" that John Green mentioned was based off of an incident involving my ancestors in the Beauchamp-Sharp tragedy of Kentucky! I can actually trace the Beauchamp family name all the way back to William the Conqueror and the Norman invasion of England!
thank you guys so much for your vids
I'm from Rhode Island and just wanted to let you know our (Big Blue Bug) has a name it's called "Nibbles Woodaway" we had a school contest in 2007 and a kid won and got to name him XD.
John, my friend, it's Raleigh(Rah-lee), North Carolina, not Rally lol
SunyiSideUp I actually saw the Andy Griffith bronze statue at Pullen Park last Saturday coincidentally.
I live about half an hour away from Harrisburg, PA and it really is a gorgeous capital building.
The bug from Rhode Island is named Nibbles Woodaway, and at Christmas time he's dressed up with Christmas lights, antlers, and a red nose to look like Rudolph.
OMG! I think I'm gonna forget to be awesome! What can I do?
You know, you can make fun of Albany all you want but I rather like my perforated toilet paper.
That is fricken hilarious about Boston being flooded in Molasses
CHA-CHING! Hahahhaahha John is my favorite host!!
John, at 8:15 - Though the origin you give is correct, the city's name, Pierre, is pronounced "PEER."
HE FORGOT TO BE AWESOME
As someone from New Hampshire, I demand a better fact than, "It WASN'T the Concord where the shot heard round the world was heard."
Another Interesting Fact about Pierre, SD (from me, a South Dakotan): Anyone local to South Dakota pronounces the capital city "Peer". If you pronounce it "Pea-air", you will be immediately known as someone who isn't from around here.
Unless I've always been taught wrong, which would not surprise me, our capital here in North Carolina is pronounced "RAWL-ee" not as "rally".
I noticed that too, the weird thing is that his parents live in NC. It's probably a dialect thing, but I don't know how you could mispronounce that
I always thought it was RAW-league.
I must have that bust of Ron Swanson.
I love that the Earthquake Game got a mention here. Until I started school here at the beginning of this year I had never heard about it, but now I know just how proud Tiger fans are of it over 20 years later. Geaux Tigers!
I swear, that "dam" pun always makes me laugh, every time.
Football earthquakes are a regular thing in Seattle.
Honolulu is home to the only royal palace in America..._for now_.
There's a lot of history in Sacramento, surprisingly... Gold rush stuff, last stop on the Pony Express, Tom Hanks went to Sac State...
Hey John! Love the show! But did you know you pronounce Colorado incorrectly? Keep up the awesome work! Can't wait for another video!
4:50 Oh no, what horribly embarrassing thing is he going to say about Minnesota...
4:58 That isn't so bad, most Minnesotans learn this on their school trip to the capitol in 4th grade.
5:59 Oh god, there it is....
I took none of this in, lol.
IKR
I watched for Jefferson City. Been here my whole life; another neat fact about it, though, is that before the current Missouri River bridge was built, there was a two lane bridge that was too low to let barges pass, so it had a pivoting center section.
Pitch Perfect reference. I Love You!!!
Yeah, that's not what Sacramento looks like. There's not even a beach there.
Lots of flatland and rice fields to be more precise. And somehow Phoenix is in the Grand Canyon now.
Uh-oh, you pointed out Bachman was wrong. Prepare to be accused of persecution!
As a Massachusetts native, there was actually a book in my elementary school classroom called the Great Molasses Flood...yeah
Great stuff, very interesting. Love the banjo, although, banjos and cellos are the two scariest musical instruments ever, in my mind (hints: "Squeal like a pig" & "We're going to need a bigger boat"). To elaborate on Indiana's capitol; To use The Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the interesting fact, is like using The Pope as one of the famous people to have slept in Vatican City (which as you mentioned would fit into the Speedway, with several other locations). However, you could have mentioned that the original capitol of The Indiana Territory, was Vincennes, which is full of American history, and/or that Corydon was Indiana's first capitol as a state (and second as a territory). Corydon is also full of history including the place where Squire Boone died, and was entombed in a cave, (where years later relic hunters would go in and snatch parts from his skeleton until someone with brains finally decided that the last pieces of his remains should be collected and preserved for history, if not for his dignity). WHO is Squire Boone you ask? He is Daniel Boone's brother. BUTT (not a misspelling, just a fun play on words), What is Corydon truly famous for at this time of strange internet history? Butt Drugs, of course. As can be seen with a simple UA-cam search for "Butt Drugs". Always remember, if you're going to take a trip to Georgia for some river rafting, first stop off at Corydon, Indiana's first capitol, run in the Cavern and say hello to Daniel Boone's brother, and then look for Butt Drugs, because you never know when you'll hear a couple of scary banjos dueling.... Still, the same ole Indy 500 stuff is okay too (even something for every Hoosier to be proud of), and I guess it's actually fitting, considering I just watched this video in May...... I wont even touch on the interesting facts of Florida's state capital, due to the fact that I would have to mention that there was once a "West Florida", and I'd be sitting here for days. This video has some great stuff in it, really interesting.................
Really a question on the number of seconds in a year? Just use a calculator lol...
BOY-SEE NOT BOY-ZEE!!!!
That's a very nice salon you've got there John Greene. (Creeper in the background)
Kudos to whomever put the Eevee on the shelf.
Concord is pronounced more like con-KERD but nobody knows until they visit (:
another fact about pierre south dakota: we south dakotans pronounce it as one syllable like the word "peer", not two syllables like "pee-air" :)
sidenote: if you do another video involving states, please do us a favor and dont talk about or even use a picture of mount rushmore. theres more to us than that lol
I was just about to comment on that, but you beat me to it :) Glad I'm not the only one who caught it!
Chel Ruhh
I ❤️❤️❤️ Sioux Falls
Here in NH we pronounce Concord as Con-KERD. I know, I know, makes no sense. Does anything we say in New England actually make sense? Haha! Love your videos!
Montgomery does a minor league team named the biscuits, but the mascot is an anteater named big mo...
You pronounced the capitol of South Dakota wrong. I know it looks like the French name, and it even came from the French name, but if you ask any resident of the state they'll tell you it's pronounced "Peer". I don't know why we pronounce it that way, but we do. Pronouncing it like the French name is also a big pet-peeve of South Dakotans.
It's pronounced "Peer" because the guy it was named after also pronounced it that way. At least that's what I learned growing up.
It's not pronounced Pierre it's pronounced pier I should know I used to live there
That giant termite in Providence is named "the big blue bug" and is dressed like a Rudolph at Christmas time:)
I'm from Marshall, Michigan. In Marshall there is a house called the Governor's Mansion. Apparently Marshall was almost chosen as the state capital but at the last minute it was switched to Lansing.
Wow, a fact list about capital cities that doesn't include how Juneau is the only one not connected to the others by road (save Honolulu).
It's pronounced "Peer" South Dakota.
I forgot to be awesome. I've been relying on your advice! :)
I see an Eevee! Also, nice video, John :)
That's an interesting pronunciation of Raleigh there, John.... (sigh)
don't worry he mispronounced Pierre too
he mispronounced Concord as well lol
Annie Dunigan John, everyone in Massachusetts is silently ashamed.
Mispronounciation is his THING guys
New Hampshire :D
New Hampshire!!!!
yes, and it's pronounced Con-kerd..
That was the 2nd lamest one. Right behind Nebraska. Do people still live there?
New Hampshire is not lame at all, and over 1.2 million people live here.
1.2 million and we'd prefer if it didn't grow any bigger.
A bit unrelated, but we Oregonians also have the world's shortest river. It's called the D river and it's in Lincoln city. It goes into the Pacific and there is a rather nice restaurant next to it called Kyllo's.
I need to participate in the Grumble Run.. Never knew that was a thing
Anyone else disappointed in their own state capitol fact? Texas... coulda had something better.. am I right?
My state capital has a fact befitting the marvelousness of our state, Go perforated toilet paper!
Yeah, that was pretty lame.
Yep... Oklahoma's was pretty terrible. But I'm an expat, so it's not so bad...
Pennsylvania.... we have a handsome Capitol buiding
Yeah, there's cooler stuff in Virginia then the give me liberty or give me death speech.
Whoa. Keep Austin Weird? No. Keep Portland Weird came first.
Nahhh, it started in Austin. Even when it comes to politics Austin/central Texas votes differently from the rest of the state. Haha. But the Keep Portland Weird thing can be heard often in the show Grimm! ❤
Anyone from Waco Texas would argue with you about Austin being central Texas. the southern point (At least as I know it) is about Belton/ Temple. Where as the northern is Clifton.
I stand corrected. Gotta do my research I guess! Thanks for the great slogan Austin. We Portlanders think of you guys as brothers from another mother.
I didn't mean to say that central Texas is ONLY Austin. I was just generalizing the area. Should have used "and" instead of the slash symbol. I live north of Austin myself. :)
Us weirdos gotta stick together! It makes the world a much more lively and fun place!
Whoa! There may be a mission San Miguel in Santa Fey, but that was a picture of San Miguel in Central California. About 15 miles north of Paso Robles CA.
Yay Austin ! I was just waiting for him to say Texas 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
