Have a double layer rotating "shield", so you know how people do fake rotors for helicopter looking vehicles with the invisible rotating rotors, like that... except one outer layer and one inner layer, and have a sensor that triggers when enemy is in proximity so it's not always on.... honestly can see this as being kind of handy for a base defense, or a extra layer of defense for a large door that leads under ground.
im gonna try and make a more practical "energy shield" using this exploit. some things the comments have suggested that i'll try: rotating the projection overlapping/staggered grids of dummies (using subgrids to get them closer together) I'm also going to do just one direction, rather than a full box around a ship. for performance's sake mostly. perhaps attached to a turret so the shield can turn to block damage from a specific direction. if it goes well, might make a video. if i do, will update comment. ( EDIT: video made. these shields might be good. but there are also some major drawbacks. check it out if you want! ua-cam.com/video/SNWpzds_bww/v-deo.html )
I might want to try that too my ship designs can be large but at the front are super thin so I can dodge attacks while shooting from a distance some thing like a while at the front of my ship I can quickly turn off and on while shooting my main cannons
I done a quick test and with three projections it blocks a lot of things missiles are easy to block but bullets can sort of worm their way through but over all really effective
Making a proper overlapping grid out of it to block at least about 80% of the surface would mean an impenetrable shield, and lightweight ship design, like you wouldn't even need a hull at that point. Questions: -does it block clang projectiles? -does it block explosions that go off on the outside from propagating to the inside? -does it block stuff when both the ship and the projectiles are in motion? What are the precise requirements for it to block something? -don't know if it's possible, but what happens if you start projecting into the body or the inner airspace of another ship? Especially if that other ship moves... My assumption, based on the video, is that it only blocks actively when its grid is not being propelled (= no acceleration). This would also explain why it can't collide with planetary terrain, needs to be tested on an asteroid, without acceleration. If this is true, ramming might be feasible by just turning off the engine. If that doesn't work however, than I really can't fathom how it truly works. Also, a gun or even clang gun projectile that has this as the tip of the projectile should be feasible if it works as I assume. Also also, if upon startup it breaks objects that are overlapping with it when they move, an overly elaborate system could be made that materializes only a single dummy in the path or inside of a ship or projectile, sort of like as if you teleported a bomb inside of that ship. Capture devices could also be made, either as a fixed trap or as a ship-mounted device. The latter is especially terrifying, since while moving it can capture the ship within its confines, then you just stop moving and the other ship can't do anything to get out. You also mentioned that colliding with it doesn't do any damage, I feel like there is some idea to be exploited there too, like making a landing pad out of it, to safely touch down ships. Hell, you could maybe even propel ground vehicles over to the other side of the planet in the air, where a grid made from this could catch them, could make for a fun fast travel system.
i think whats going on is that things check if they collide with the dummy, but the dummy doesnt check if it collides with things, if that makes sense to you. so you can never move into the dummy, but the dummy can always move into you. this breaks the laws of physics in many ways, but i can see how it would happen coding wise.
You could make the six sides of the energy shield projected individually, and only activate one segment when you are expecting incoming fire from that side. It would fit into the classic distributing shield power theme we see in movies and games.
Server admins have known about this for a long time. Its been pointed out to keen since the day the block was implemented. Maybe thats why smarter servers have them disabled. :)
I may use this to have toggleable sides of the shields to prevent performance issues, and use it to prevent ramming. So when an incoming ram is imminent you toggle the side that it is coming towards
wow a way to protect my base when I am offline. 2 layers offset should work great. one with dummies facing out and the other with dummies facing in should let them get pretty close to prevent people sliding in
They could be useful for a space station shield bubble since space stations don't move on their own (usually), preventing giant ships from just waiting for you it to ram them. and some of the dummies would de connected to a giant door that lets supply ships and tinier ships through. But not bigger ones like destroyer or dreadnought for exemple. Of course it wouldn't be perfect since dummies can't be put that close to one another. So maybe a two layers shield could work temporarily since the support for them would still break, leaving a gap again. It would prevent collision and protect lesser ships from being the main target of attacks. I really hop the developers will ad tiny energy shielding that works similar to that but with a high energy cost that would proc when hit by... well anything lol.
What if you spawned the hologram while near an enemy ship to mess with it? could you throw off their course or make it block their own guns? Maybe spawn in front of rocket pods or railguns? Maybe if you spawn the hologram inside a large enemy ship you could bring it down in orbit? or gravity balls and a grav gen to make it weird to fly in space?
Maybe a good anti-pmw Active Protection System. A sensor could be used to detect Pmw rounds such as script-guided missiles, clang gun shells, and grav gun shells and automatically turn on the projector for the corresponding side of the ship, reducing lag from it always being on.
if you can make the projection rotates, then you could take advantaje of rotational speed and get a 'rotating shield' if you cant get 4 rotational shields that join in the incomming enemy fire, then you could fill even more gaps simulating a functional inertial shield that absorves damage by punching the bullets or getting hitted
not a SE player, but with napkin math of even just 1 layer of em on 1 side it'll block say 20% of incoming fire; that's a significant enough advantage imo
Someone should make a Mod where the Dummy is just a GIANT EGG and you and you only need a Hologram that is Placed in the Middle of the Ship. Boom, you have a Energy Shield that Protects your Ship. When Pass through, just Deactivate the Projector remotely while Enter/Exit it and Reactivate it thereafter. The One Egg Dummy should be Enough to Protect your Ship and even Spares your PC/Xbox from Catching Fire.
Could one make an active zebra camouflage by coating the ship in a projected shell of black and white and rapidly alternating to an inverse pattern like a cuttlefish? Could also be used for billboards.
unfortunately color doesn't really get translated by projections well. they remain transparent and desaturated. also, the nature of the game's targeting system means that if you have line of sight to a grid and are in detection range, the lock on system will put a circle on it. so the only reliable way to hide is to hide behind something. LCDs and colored lights would work well for what you seem to want to try, though. so maybe give those a shot :3
You could make a ship capture system where you move the field around the ship, and then they cannot move out on their own.
Devious.
Something like this has been done: ua-cam.com/video/d2DPa4bND2E/v-deo.html
Especially devious because the trap is twofold: it traps your ship, and also your fps

Perhaps Have another projector on a sub grid so its can be offset to fill in the shield gaps🤔
"I want a force field in game"
Game dev with a smug smile, "another one?"
Put it on a turret, so it will aim it at enemies. Lower hit to performance, and hopefully, gaps will be harder to hit.
Shield turret, nice.
It would need to have 360 degree rotation somehow though, so you may need multiple turrets.

Yeah, just do two projections and tilt one of them to overlap gaps

How the heck does it not collide with the ships while the ship collide with it
how does that asymmetry work
Keen
The shield update has come

Oh wow these are really broken. I hope Keen fixes them soon.

Zurych TheSeaGul found out u can basically use them as a tractor beam for ships if u put a projector on a custom turret.

Force field doors for stations that only blocks ship enterance. This gave my many ideas. Thanks.
targetdummy projection armor
Make this rotate and you can probably make this better at the cost of cpu speed. Now you have to get a better cpu, so SE is finally pay to win!
I'm wondering if you could project a dummy above a decoy to tank lightning so you neve have to weld up the decoy. Might be something I look into.
not a SE player, but with napkin math of even just 1 layer of em on 1 side it'll block say 20% of incoming fire; that's a significant enough advantage imo
If your using it to just stop ramming then you could probably have a 1 to 2 block gap in between each projection to save performance

Now I can't stop thinking about projecting 20 of these inside someone's large ship and letting the clang run wild.
The obvious use for me is an extra layer of protection for a large door, or even the door itself
Reducing the amount of shots you take even by 10% is a massive advantage in pvp
You could make it coaxial with a rocket launcher or something so that you can freeze enemy ships and then pummel them with rockets.
Using the console block also lets you scale it, so you can make the gaps smaller
what about.. you use a rotor and multiple dummy proyections in different angles to create a shield in vulnerable or exposed areas
Could one make an active zebra camouflage by coating the ship in a projected shell of black and white and rapidly alternating to an inverse pattern like a cuttlefish? Could also be used for billboards.

What if you spawn projection inside of block?
Yes like when that ship at 1:35 is docked to another ship and then the projection is turned on.
Could be a good crash protection instead of parachutes?
ya really need maybe 2 overlaping shelds of thies in a static grid to make a near perfict wall
what happens if you toggle show only buildable
B R U H. That's a helluvan oversight lol. Wonder if/when they'll patch it.
It's a force field that works both ways
Projector based 1x1 player elevator?
Keen is so close to some sorts of vanilla shields 😅
I’m going to make a ship that has a dummy sheld system if this is not patched out
All I see is genius. As long as it’s not an external client or purposefully lag-making clang machine I really couldn’t care much.
Rick and Morty Shield, I love it!
So that would work great vs pirate grinder drones...
I am about to be band on my pvp server, hold my beer !
Why should thay be baind if thay stop ramers and hydrogen men?
Holo bridge yo can activate and deactivate like in the clone wars
Make a Base and build a Bomb shield
I like the possibilities....
Vanilla shield idea
Free anti-crash pad
one-way collision eh? interesting...
2-3 projectors and ship is invinceable
space engineers force field.
Was this ever patched
Use the console instead for the sheild
Energy bridge
Wall of Mortys
Hmmmm.
Gonk :]
This is hilarious 🤣
i did a video on this xD
we invented shields xd
wow
*Sigh* Keen...
