Stumbled onto this album on YT somehow. Such a fabulous sound and performances throughout. Has become a firm favourite. About three months after I had first heard it, I couldn't believe it when I saw a copy of the album (Danish pressing) in a small town in Sweden for about 12 Euros. Judging by the prices on Discogs it is a super rare record and I was very lucky to find it.
this is one of my favorites as well. incredible, you were definitely vey lucky! even finding many of these albums online is rare. i’ve imported most of them from japan at great expense.
She sounds better to me now than at any other point in her long career. "The Thrill Is Gone" was great---breath control, sculpted melodic line, emotional cry from the soul--except for the segue into 'My Man." What was the point of that? -- And she's got breath-control close to Sarah's on the Tad Dameron piece "If You Could See Me Now." Ever since hearing Sassy and Frank Collett (p) from the 2-CD concert "In the City of Lights" (1985), theirs is the version to match. Still, Helen's version is equally valid. Nice bass solo on the melody of the Duke anthem, but it's even cooler when the other instruments know the tunes. As a pianist who's learned thousands of tunes, I'm left wanting, but not because of Helen.
Mother of late artist Alan Merrill and aunt to legendary singer song writer Laura Nyro. What a Family!
