  • California is introducing a new bill (SB 1450) exempting pick-up trucks weighing less than 10,000 lbs from weight fees. The bill becomes effective January 1, 2019. This will save you money on costly registration fees...

I plan on buying and converting a 22’ U-Haul box truck into an RV. Until I complete the conversion, is it possible to change the box trucks commercial classification into a personal use vehicle so my registration is lower? (After the conversion next year I will then change it to RV.)

After watching the videos here. I was able to do the exemption. My Dodge 2500 has a camper shell on it. When I spoke to a dmv person while paying for my conversion the person cautioned me about not taking the shell off and driving camperless. If you get that DOT certified cop and you get cited. You will pay all back weight fees. I just filled out the change of plates and statement of facts. Got smog d exchanged plates and I was done.

Has the DMV updated their registration calculator? Looking to buy a 2019 f250 gvwr 10k (under 10,001). Calculator saying yearly registration is +$900? Is that accurate or are we paying less now?

I bought a 2020 Tundra Crewmax 4x4 Sports. Here in California. Just got my vehicle registration renewal notice and says $257 for weight fee. I am baffled. Is this correct? I contacted the DMV and they told me that pickup trucks are considered commercial and therefore; have to pay a weight fee. But damn $257 is way too much.

Same here. The weight fee is 257.00. My total is $1,119.00. I hate California.

Yes. You can drive your truck around with your BBQ grill cooler without being fined. However, we can't say what an officer will know or does not know about weight laws.

I call BS! As this guy states, it's being introduced, apparently it wasn't PASSED. So you're SOL.

Yeah, the communist Dems, took one look at it and said no, the peasants must pay.

@@HammerHed13 you can probably tell this angers me. I have a fiberglass shell on my truck that I use to sleep/camp in at least 75 days a year. I attempted to get the weight exemption, but the DMV person said that I needed it to have a toilet, kitchen and water available. Seriously. I have a sleeping platform with containers below for my cooking setup. I also mentioned that I didn't need an actual toilet since I own a shovel. Lol. Wasn't good enough. Apparently Ca. needs the $80/year more than I do.

My husband just bought a 2004 ford F 150 and the vehicle registration renewal notice says that the weight fee is $154.00. Would please tell me if there something I can to do!

To avoid commercial weight fees, you would need to convert the vehicle to an RV showing it as habitable. This can be a costly and challenging task. Please keep in mind, the fee you mentioned is also assesed penalties when you are late.
