You have a Chet Atkins-type of strings-intuitiveness.. Song's great, you're great; please keep sharing your smarts. Because you know it.., folks need to.
Thanks so much! It really is nerve-wracking!! Especially because I don’t have very much experience doing this, but at least I’m not out a lot of money if it doesn’t go well. The good news is that I was able to remove the fiction tuner so that’s the first step!!
I have almost this exact Banjo, it's a 60's harmony Chicago model, It's been my only banjo for 4 years, I think it sounds pretty nice. The fretboard and tuners are pretty rough, and I'll probably need to upgrade sometime, but it's taken me far into banjo world.
They kind of have a cult following of a love/hate relationship since they’re not super great banjos but at the same time they actually are fairly decent for what they are! I’m hoping these upgrades will make it playable at least and it doesn’t cost that much. I think the tuner was $15 and the new bridge was $5. As long as I can do the work myself, it won’t be a large amount to put into it
A reamer can be expensive, cutting one down is not an easy job as they are made of "tool steel" I.e. they are tough! The chance of finding one with the same taper as your new peg is remote - not impossible but remote. You would be perhaps better advised to improve the efficiency of the peg that is already there. I notice there is nothing between the string hole section and the body inside the neck, a small thin washer in there to increase the friction might do the trick, try a metal one but a fibre one would be better. If you can get the tension screw in the plastic button set right between too loose ( won't tune ) and too tight ( won't move) , you should sort your problem. I've played banjos with this sort of friction peg for years and I've always been able to get them working OK. Hope this helps ( and I'm not too late.)
You've got this!

Working on old instruments is so nerve-wracking. I believe in you! You got this - can't wait for the follow-up of you shredding another tune on it. 🤘🏻

Absolutely. And not to be Cpt. Obvious here, but there’s only one way to get experience. 😁
