    There's something perfect about how you frame the shot, the sound of the piano, and how you play. It's a rare treat to see talent up front, and I'm still learning plenty too. If you ever play the UK I'm there. Stay cool Kent.

      Dan, Thanks! That's a great compliment...particularly because I'm low-tech and I only use a Canon Powershot S-95 for sound and video and a free Windows editor. Most people doing this are using complex hi tech equipment. Some of my relatives are from UK. Swing loose!

    Love these two new videos which I discovered while trying to find where I left off in the beginning jazz series. I fell off the "piano practice wagon" for a little while due to home restoration issues, but I'm back now. I'm really excited to continue and even bought your book this morning. Can't wait to dig in and apply the material. I'm sure it will help me work through your many wonderful free videos. Can't thank you enough for your unwavering dedication to jazz education. It must give you tremendous satisfaction to know you are helping so many people improve their skill at this mind bending genre. You are a treasure!

    Hey Kent! Kudos to you sir! Only an artist at the peak of his career can explain Jazz in such a simple way. Cheers!

    Very good exercise. Also, very stressful...but worthwhile. I've been doing this lesson (at the highest step #8) for the past several weeks and it has done wonders for my confidence. It shook my confidence in the beginning but over time, it has built it back up. Also, I've been using various randomly selected syncopations (I write it down), which adds to my stress level but it sounds great. Sometimes, the beat is 1, 2&, 4, and other times, it's 1&, 2, 3&, 4&. I use dice and a reference chart to get my randomized beats.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 роки тому

      I'm glad you're being creative with the exercise. It shows that you have self motivation....which all great musicians have and need...you're on your way, brother!

    This video is great because you could use this for laid back and fast jazz too. Core concepts explained through a simple exercise. Also you focus on everything other pianists don’t. It’s definitely a first step to jazz that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I know it’s good to understand different modes, chord progressions, modulations, and how to input them properly, but you need to understand the flow and all the fundamentals before tackling advanced stuff. Great tutorial for people beginning jazz improvisation!

    when you put the syncopation in it.. it brought it alive.. Basically I learned it from humming and singing.. the metronome won't do that..I didn't realize what syncopation was until years into music.. had a vague idea but always learning.. btw I'm getting the herbie Hancock riff down in all the keys.. i have the g minor one down almost perfect. I just kept at it. Another thing that has helped me and I'll pass this on. The brain will work things out.. I've gone to sleep and woke up and played
    guitar solos and likewise piano pieces. A simple coffee break., lunch, a phone call,etc. There is something about these interruptions that does a. rain reset. Also after practicing physically demanding piano parts,,got body will also sync in with brain. and it does eventually. become natural.

      Hi Bruno, thanks for writing...I have a Beginner Jazz Series and well as a series called Easy Jazz Lessons...these are geared to beginner jazz not beginner piano...that's different. They assume that you can read music and have basic skills. Go to my channel page and click on playlists to see all my categories:

      I saw the series. I play in a rock band. I tried to get into jazz a few other times and gave up. I encouraged myself with your channel.
      I loved Scale Cosmic Symmetry, but for example, in other videos other subjects are covered and I do not know if it can be embedded in II V I and things like that. For now I have not found a clear order to continue learning, but I'm just starting out. I saw that there are several videos on the channel. I'll explore more
      I have heard more and more jazz and perceived the power of this music. I'm from Brazil, so I'm sorry for some English error. I appreciate the attention. I'll keep trying, XO

    Excelente video, tengo 65, soy aficionado a la música desde niño, toqué guitarra desde los 13 canciones de Beatles, hendrix, clapton y stones. Por mi madre aprendí amar la ,única de Beethoven, paganini, liszt y bach y rachmaninoff. Jack loussiere, amstrong, goodman los aprendí de mi papa. Me interesé en el piano y empezaba a preguntarme cómo evolucionar de las escalas tradicionales mayor, menor y alteraciones ( séptima, novena, etc.) al mundo exótico del jazz. ¡Y AQUÍ LO ENCONTRÉ! Muchísimas gracias a Kent, pero muchas muchas.

      Kent Hewitt I meant "solo piano technique" as in playing without anyone else comping or playing time. Ive recently been playing a lot of solo cocktail gigs and i realized how used to a rythm section i have gotten. If you could maybe take a tune like "never never land" or "pure imagination" and discuss how you would go about playing it by yourself I would really apreciate it!! Thanks so much for all the help and all the great music!!

    As an aside, totally love your videos. As someone who was only classically trained for 9 months, this really opens up Jazz Piano for me, so thank you.
    Keep on bein groovy Kent.

      Thanks for the question. It's a good one, and perhaps would make for a useful video. There's a step- by- step process that will help you, involving playing quarter notes connecting with the foot beats, then 8th notes, then emphasizing the 2nd, 4th, etc, 8th notes (off beats: those not on the beat), eventually leading to playing syncopation in hands while keeping steady quarter note beat with foot. Using a metronome will help.

    Rewatching this.. watching your other one on same subject.. you just posted. I passed a a musical milestone .. my base clef note recognition is just as good as the Trebble clef. I don't use every good boy .. that's a crutch.. we should know the notes as they are.. My problem is timing now. I can keep time with my ear, but seeing the music and getting the right timing
    quickly is my present battle. I wish it came easy. My grandmother used to say if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. I look at this as a challenge. When a field is cleared of big rocks, you have to keep hitting them untill they crumble. The reason I use this analogy is that the rock seems like it's never going to crumble and then it does. Do you have any downloads that address timing specifically? working on the Oscar Peterson Dominants.

      2 notes in left hand and 2 in right hand can be a good sound...very sparse with essential harmonies. It's good to be versatile and know many ways of voicing chords... and mix it up. If you watch more of my videos you'll see that I do that.

      Thanks ,Kent, Definitely its what I need to do as block chords wont do the job I want which is to also play piano sheet music. As an older learner ,i am teaching myself using ABRSM GRADES. In chords I used your ii, v, i as a base for key c 1M7- 2m7- 5dom 7(2nd inversion) -1M7-- 1DOM7--4M7--3m7--2m7 -- 1M7 -- 1 dim7--2m7--5dom7--1M7. Now learning in other keys ( bit tougher) Honestly, if it was not for discovering your site, I would have given up ages ago. ps. presently working on your first book "JAZZ PIANO"

    how do you choose notes in melody when you play 8th notes from the basic melody?

    • @lenharddedecker974

      Marco Pepe diatonic or chromatic approach tones to guide tones

    • @KentHewittpiano88

      Combinations of chord tones and passing tones for each chord (key of C white notes) This is just part 1. Part 2 would be to start using chromatic passing tones.

    Hey Kent, thanks for the lesson. Really helpful. I was wondering, when you get into the syncopation steps, are you hitting that target tones on the ands of the beat? Or are the ands for the approach tones

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 роки тому +1

      Without looking at the video again, I would say that it's both. The target tones will fall often on the off beats (or an's) that makes jazz syncopation really swing, but also they will fall on the down beats. Good question. Check out bebop notation...that should help you to understand it, if you analyze it.

    I have a question if I may. I’ve seen you mention before to set the metronome on beats 2 and 4. But if you do that do you tap beats 1 and 3? I ask because I have to play a song over 200bpm and am trying to build up speed and was thinking tapping every other beat would save my feet. ;-)

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  6 років тому

      You can set it on 1 and 3 to start. If your tempo is 200 on the quarter notes then you set it for 100. After you're comfortable playing it on 1 and 3 you should try to switch to 2 and 4 because that will ultimately be more comfortable and make it swing better. (you're accenting the 2 and 4,the way you would clap your hands to a jazz beat).

    hello kent. This is my first comment after a decade on UA-cam. I want to commend you on this special work you've done, in terms of packaging and appearances, it's not sexy and attractive with modern graphics and headlines; but the content is gold - no fluff, approachable, and you take time to explain concepts others take for granted. Jazz is very difficult, and we definitely need people who can communicate effectively. I really appreciate all your work and hope you'll keep going on because it's making a real impact in the lives of those who are less musically gifted but who want to put in the hard work to learn Jazz bit by bit! I have one question though - what are the 8th notes that you mentioned? I tried searching online and it appears that 8th notes relate to rhythm. But from your explanation and playing, it sounds more like you're doing something melodically rather than rhythmically. Could you care to explain please? Thank you! :)

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  4 роки тому

      That's a great comment Farmer, and very helpful to me. I appreciate your generosity and affirmation, because that will keep me going. Jazz Improvisation generally implies that you are improvising in 8th notes , both rhythmically and melodically. Just listen to jazz recordings, especially the things Charlie Parker did. The bebop language was fast tricky lines and syncopation using 8th notes mostly.... but not always. You should mix it up of course.... otherwise it would sound like an exercise..

    • @farmergiles9126
      @farmergiles9126 4 роки тому

      @@KentHewittpiano88 Thank you sir. But I still have a question of what exactly 8th notes are! Is there any resource that I can read about on 8th notes? Because when I see your video your melody instantly changed but online it all talks about swing rhythm etc. Any info along those lines would be much appreciated!

      Farmer Giles - For an explanation of 8th notes see this video: ua-cam.com/video/ZoxN0wOmw-Q/v-deo.html. Also, look for other videos on music rhythms & rhythmic divisions. Maybe that answers your question.

    I have a question - Instead of making up my own melody, I could just use a melody from a simple jazz standard and then follow all the steps you did here, correct?
    All the things you are
    C jam blues
    autumn leaves
    If you have others that you think would be a good place to start feel free to add to it.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  6 років тому

      Of course, you can use any song. I used a common 8 measure progression so I could keep it short. Most songs will be 32 measures. (blues are generally 12 measures).
