I also owned a red 1993 VTEC, just like the one tested in this retro review. Before I purchased it, I did a lot of research, and remember reading various reviews -- that were actually not stellar. Mostly I remember reviewers being critical of the appearance and "ugly" interior. I never understood those reviews. I always felt the exterior was beautiful and interior very comfortable and "futuristic". Just before buying the Prelude, I test drove a Ford Probe V6 (a competitor to the Prelude at the time) and thought it was just alright. Shortly thereafter I test drive the Prelude and ... to this day remember vividly how absolutely blown away I was. So beautiful, so fast, so mechanically precise. It made the Probe feel like an 80s Buick. I drove it for 13 years. In retrospect, it appears to me that this was one of the best cars of the 90s -- absolutely the best in its class. The reviewers were totally wrong about the car, which is a good lesson and a reminder to always test drive a vehicle before buying.

@Anita Ayon agreed. The one with the Mazda engine wasn’t as bad, but the prelude is still way ahead of it. My buddy had a vtec prelude and it was pretty dang quick in it’s day!

I test-drove a ‘92 Prelude Si. It was non VTEC, but it was still quick as crap. I could only imagine how fast the VTEC ‘Lude was. I ended up with a 5spd. Acura Vigor. Fun car and room for 5. That 5 cylinder was a screamer, too.

+Joseph Rogers people would lose their minds and have a fit nowadays if they couldn't get their precious automatic. So sad. Even sadder is the fact that cars equipped with a manual are extremely hard to find and usually have to be special ordered. I worked for a dealer and the owner would not stock manuals in anything. Not even Mustang GTs.

The Prelude was more fun to drive, more comfortable and had a much nicer interior (except for glare off that flat dash).

Brings back memories. In '99, I purchased a used '94 Prelude VTEC that had 37k miles. It was the same green color as the one at the beginning of this video with black leather interior. It had the nicer rims that came on the '94 - '96 models. Loved driving that car but due to its extreme impracticality, I kept it less than a year. It would realistically only seat 2 people. The back seat was a joke. Nevertheless, it was fun to drive and I have no regrets purchasing it, even though the owner experience was short lived.

The 97 Prelude resolved that issue along with more rear seat room, that could fit small adults back there and not just small kids.

  • @RoadCone411

I don't see these Preludes very often these days, always kind of liked them. I wasn't crazy about the dashboard layout but there was no denying the car had very sharp, tight handling and good performance for the day. This was sort of the strange time for Honda, they were trying to take their design language in a different direction (such as, 'let's kill off the very popular CRX Si and replace it with the Del Sol')...it didn't always work. They got the engine and most of the exterior styling right on this car, it doesn't look almost 30 years old!

Always wanted a Prelude, but back then they were just to pricey. Had to settle for 1991 CRX Si.
Sure wish companies would bring back coupes like this. Sporty, but also a bit of luxury. Sadly if they did, they would price them so high they would be sold in such small numbers it would only last a few years.
I don't understand why Honda stopped the Accord coupe. Well I understand, for the same price, you can get a 4 dr sedan.

As an owner of 2 Honda Preludes (2001 and a 1991) I would LOVE to see them bring back a Prelude for today's generation! I bet they could toss around 260hp and sell it around 25k and it would sell like crazy. This is when Honda was king, the 90's were truly the best years for Honda. The 2000's were complete dull boxes on the road, the world has changed though and Honda to me isn't the Honda it once was. To me, Honda Is just living off of their name at this point, not good looking innovative cars!
