- Bacon Green Beans - Green Bean with Bacon - Perfect Side Dish -This makes a delicious side dish with almost everything or can be the main course. This recipe is hundreds of years old and wasn't created in some fancy restaurant. It was most probable from a log cabin in the mountains.
I remember my Granny making this when I was growing up. It works with a fancy meal, at a potluck, church dinner, a big holiday spread or add some taters and in season veggies for summer dinner. This heirloom dish will add some delicious variety to your mealtime routine. It is not an ordinary side dish.
Remember to put God first!

Ingredients:
3 or 4 Strips Bacon
1 tablespoon Bacon Grease
1/2 Onion Chopped
12 to 16 ounces (Green Beans Fresh, Frozen or Canned)
Salt & Pepper to taste

When I was growing up my Grandma and I would pick the green beans and small red potatoes right out of her garden. She fixed the beans as you did and then added the cooked potatoes. This was our main dish. I am now 75 years old and this is still one of my favorite dishes and you will find this on my dinner table summer, spring, fall and winter and I can see my Grandmother sitting at the table with the family.
I will certainly pray for Vanessa and your family.

My Dad absolutely loved green beans, fresh carrots and new white taters out of the garden. He'd boil them all up together, drain em and then add a little milk (or cream if he had it) and some butter and salt and pepper. We grew up calling this "Hodge podge". My Dad's been gone now over 15 years, gone way too early at 64. I was blessed to have him come and live with me as he waited for a double lung transplant. We hadn't lived together since I was 14. I had a small little condo in Toronto a single working career woman and boom...My very sick Dad came to live with me and I was his main care giver. I moved away from home when I was 14, so here in Toronto I had no family, no close friends to speak of so it was just Dad and me. This was the biggest blessing of my life up to that point. It was my honour to care for him and help him through this journey. He had his double lung transplant on Dec. 15, 2003. Just a few days before his 64th birthday. Sadly, while his transplant was a success he died from other complications a few months later. I will forever be so thankful for that time with just my Dad and I. I made his favorite meals as often as I could. I love your videos every one of them brings some beautiful memories to mind. I will hold your friend in my prayers that she be fully healed in Jesus name.
Would you happen to know what type of green beans were used in your grandmother's recipe?
My husband is trying to replicate his grandma's recipes and can't find the proper green bean.

My younger brother always hated green beans as a child. One time, my folks took a trip and we kids were taken to different households of friends or relatives. My younger brother got to go to my Aunt and Uncle's house in Kentucky. She knew that Russ wouldn't eat green beans so she made them just like you did here. He loved them and has eaten them ever since. But it was always so funny when you asked him what vegetable was his favorite. It was always Kentucky green beans. lol

I make a NC Tar Hill beans, which is green beans, bacon,sausage, onion and mushrooms, spices. It's a meal in itself. Just bake cornbread..you gave dinner

I remember when all kitchens had that silver bacon grease can with a strainer on their stove. All moms saved that bacon grease. Since we’ve stopped eating pork, I flavor with the meat from beef short ribs. The way you make yours is the way I was taught to make them. Thank you, God bless!

I just made a green bean and potato soup yesterday (with polska kielbasa and onions). Used to always add ham hocks, or bacon, but polska kielbasa was all I had and oh it was good. I am praying for Vanessa. Would you all pray for me, too? I've recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and they found another tumor on my sternum. I would be so grateful. I know that God is good and will carry me (and Vanessa) through this. I love what you said about asking Jesus to fill us with His light and push out the darkness. I even wrote it down. If sh had it, especially at Christmas, my nanny would sautee some small diced red sweet pepper along with her onion, in the bacon grease, and then just cooked it with the beans, until tender. Gave the beans a nice sweetness, and looked very festive at Christmas!

First I'd like to send prayers for Vanessa, and all those going through something. Don't let the Devil steal your Joy. I've had several relatives that had brain tumors. They had surgery and recoverd. God is Good. Sometimes they do come back. I'll keep Vanessa in my prayers. I put my bacon in the oven too. I save the bacon grease. I fry eggs in it. Use in vegetables. It cut down on salt. Also you can freeze Bacon Grease. I've been doing it for years. Thank you Becky for sharing this. You are right, those packets that have cooked bacon bits, or pieces is good. It flavors whatever you put it in or on. Yes times are a bit rough, but I hold on, know God is still in charge. No matter what, I'm thankful. Ilwill add Vanessa to my prayers. I lost a brother to brain cancer and another brother was diagnosed early this year with a (benign thankfully, although serious)
brain tumor. He recently had a mega radiation treatment and expected to fully recover! God is good!
