    You sort of touched on this question briefly but I was wondering how you can tell if some of your problems are from needing more time to build technique vs something with the build of the guitar impeding your progress. I've pretty much been learning on the same guitar (off and on because of school/life) since 2013/2014 and sometimes I wonder if my progress is being significantly hindered by my guitar. I know it is to a degree because when I have had the opportunity to play better guitars I am able to improve on songs a lot quicker (and just generally sound like I actually kind of know what to do lol), but I'm not sure how to tell if the impedance from my guitar is enough to really justify finally getting a different guitar. Some of the problems are 100% me just needing more practice, but even my guitar teacher when I first started playing noted that my guitar is on the more difficult side to play (and this was after we had a fair amount of work done on it to make it more playable).

    Thank you Joe as always very informative. I play for 2 and half year and consider myself gifted and consistent at playing, although barely I remember myself playing in front of others and in front of camera? Not even one thenth of my performance in practicing room. Should I be worried about not being an entertainer with guitar yet? Or is it soon? I appreciate your time and effort.

    Which guitar course would you recommend for someone who is intermediate but looking to dive a lot deeper into finger style and the style that you play?

    • @Joe_Robinson
      @Joe_Robinson  Рік тому

      Hi Justin, I’d go to InvisibleTechnique.com and join the waitlist for my Coaching Community, which I think is the product I’d most recommend. I also have Joes12 on sale right now, you can check that out although it is much broader than Fingerstyle. Then I would go to joerobinson.com/courses and check out the intermediate Fingerstyle Course on Udemy

    Hey there, Joe. I have to give you the best of congrats on your videos and career there, Mate... As an older guitar player, soon to be 67 years, and playing all kinds of music since I was around 15 years old... Fingerstyle just got to my full attention about 15 years ago. When I was realizing I could get a grip on it... LOL... I met your good friend, TE at a show way back, then I met him again and again at other shows and started taking his lessons. Then YOU show up on UA-cam and I went, Well look at this "Kid"... I can call you kid for now... and you blew me away. I see what you got from TE and built on that 10 fold. I love how we are watching, in slow motion, how a musician like you has taken such care to properly detail the semantics of how to lay down your arrangements and make them perfect. Greatly appreciate your putting out these videos for all of us, from seasoned guys and gals, to beginners. You are building the next generation of players, dude!! You are up at the top of the list now of my favorite Players, Teachers and what seems like a really clear headed and precise master. Keep up the good work. See you when you make it up to NYC or even The Poconos of PA.... Come visit out studio here anytime.... Hmmmm Do some Trout fishing in the lake...!

    Great vid as always and great tips. When you say low action, how low? I actually happen to have a guitar ruler here, it would be nice if you could provide some numbers on the 12 fret. Not to copy what you have, just to have an idea when you say playable action. Thanks

    Thanks for the video. Merry Christmas. What would you do if you have the chords of the song but you need to do it using fingerstyle esp if your head is full of techniques but you don't know which one to start with ? It's frustrating

    The most important thing I think you mentioned was teaching kids to fall in love with playing first rather than teaching them music theory first.
    Fantastic advice for any music teacher.

    I loved this vid. I completely quit playing my fabulous Martin guitar about 15 years ago. Recently decided to take it up again. My brain memory still knows everything I ever knew, however, my muscle memory has suffered a lot. Before I quit, I was probably at the high level of intermediate (with occasional ventures higher). My question is this: should I start back at pillar one (with the point of relearning properly rather than screwing up playing more advanced stuff. Depending on your answer, I am quite willing to buy your finger-picking lesson. I would love to see you play live!

      As someone who also took an extended interlude from playing I would highly recommend you buy all three of JR's courses and work through all the exercises and songs.
      I was playing okay when I left but realized I didn't know what I didn't know so I began at the beginning. Again.
      I'm not JR's salesrep but for the cost, minimal, you would be remiss to skip over the foundation skills.
      That's my 2-cents.

    Hey Joe, I absolute love your videos and really admire your not only musical but spiritual (in a sense) development. You seem to be the Bob Ross of "Musical Inspiration Videos" which leads to a question... do you meditate? You really seem to be in the middle and as if you found your spot. Just curious :)

    Hey Joe, I've been struggling with having tension in my right hand/arm recently while trying to play through the entirety of John Fahey's Red Pony. The album version (which is almost 7 minutes long) requires a lot of power and speed, and to my ears he's fingerpicking really close to the bridge of the acoustic. Do you think tension build up in that scenario is still due to me not being relaxed, or could it just be that I haven't built up the stamina for that kind of piece.
    Great video as always, have a good day bro!

    • @Joe_Robinson
      @Joe_Robinson  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Chris, I think the longer you play with tension in your right are the harder it will be to correct the habit. Stamina does play a role with a tune like this since it is long and his very repetitive. But it's all about training the hands to play without tension.
      I just took a listen to this tune and it sounds like he's using fairly light strings to me. I find melodic songs to be much easier to learn in general and better for developing technique. A good example of a melodic song would be Borsalino or if you want a real challenge, Struttin by Jerry Reed. Hope that helps and cheers! Joe

      @@Joe_Robinson Thanks man, I appreciate the reply. I think it's probably the most difficult fingerstyle song I've learned thus far, but I'm tryna learn new stuff. You think I should look into your intermediate or advanced fingerstyle course?
      Also, I'm curious what you thought about the song/if you've listened to any other Fahey stuff. I know you tend towards the more melodic stuff so I'm interested to know if you enjoyed the repetiveness of The Red Pony or if it was a turn off hah.

    When you said "I believe there is a lot left to say with these 12 notes" it gave me chill bumps because that is how I would like to contribute to the body of musical work out there as my skills grow, and is why I put out a CD earlier this year as a "late beginner"; it was an inspiring project. Thank you again for sharing not only how to play but why we do it! See you soon.
