These little suttlities in guitar playing are truly a big part & very important to the overall musical execution of a well put together composition. Thank you Joe. You are truly a great inspiration to me to complete, copyright, publish & record over 40 songs I have written. Since the lockdown caused by COVID and a bout with Lyme disease I am hearing extensive completion of melody lines that I had hit impasses with. Tommy Emanuel & you have got me now using all five fingers & capable of different rhythms. It's like a switch has been turned on in my head & I am also writing non stop new compositions. A lot of this is because in a big way of your influence. Hope to record with you one day. Cheers & God Bless both you & Tommy Emmanuel.
Great video; thanks for the great tips Joe. My rhythm is my weakness. I am going to take your's and Tommy's advice and start using my metronome more during practice. I have started to try thinking of it this way. Melody and Harmony are "what notes to play" while Rhythm is "when to play the notes" (or not play the notes as the case may be). Thanks, John Gig Harbor, WA
One thing I noticed is that controlling dynamics across the strings depend on how well the instrument is balanced across the strings, specifically volume and action.
Thanks joe this is great information thanks lad , it must be unreal been in the road with Tommy you guys are amazing thank you for the music 😬cheers from Ireland lad stay safe 🇮🇪
I'm working through your courses on udemy. for my part when I try to play lightly with my left hand I can get some unpleasant noises so I find myself using a death grip to avoid wonky sounds. maybe I need lighter strings. thanks for sharing. and finger style does rule!
Fingerstyle rules, great video, I wanted to ask you if you could make a video about warming up before playing, stretching etc. I can feel most of the time to be to tight and also to be nervous :D which might be the biggest problem, any help is welcome, great videos Joe, I always find them very usefull :)
Hey Joe! (excuse pun) I just created an account with TrueFire. I need to learn the scales and modes. You teach well. Regards to Tommy. I saw him in Germany. Not sure if he saw me! But he played my request...Mombasa!
Hey Joe, how would you describe your setup compared to Tommy and other guitars. I find that to relax my left hand I have to put my action and trussrod so low that it starts buzzing with the slightest increase in playing strength. Or is that part of the game and is my job to master the ‘buzz threshold’?
@@Joe_Robinson thanks for your reply! (And your tips of course, still struggling with that pinky and ring finger independence, going to start your exercise today!)
1. Keeping relaxed right hand 2. Tempo/timing-practice with metronome 3. Dynamics-practice playing loudly and softly 4. Getting melody to speak and be clear 5. Work on the flow in your playing-muscle memory and playing with relaxed technique
I watched a recent video where folks had poked JR in the ribs over technique or his performance. Joe Robinson is a wonderful teacher. No one else teaching on UA-cam is as thorough, detailed, or considerate. I am 71. I am loving learning what I can from Joe. I am challenged, excited, and grateful for the lessons. Joe is a wonderful resource for us guitar players. If you feel a need to criticize this guy watch him play. If you still feel the need to criticize watch the video again. Eventually you will get it….
Fingerstyle rules! Great tips bro as you're an AMAZING guitarists & it's so cool you've toured with Tommy Emmanuel as he's PHENOMENAL too! Keep rockin' bro!
Great show in GB on Sunday night. I was there and truly amazed by yours and Tommy's talents. Your willingness to share your experiences and techniques is awesome. This is something I continue to do in my playing, and I learned a few new things today. Thanks!
Wow Joe - I'm in the Theatre Management business (Tommy has played in some venues my company manages). You're promoter (or this venue) on this night had pretty nice hospitality! John Gig Harbor, WA
When using metronome on 2 and 4 beats do I hit the string with the metronome tick on the back beat (usualy its the d string) because I have always started the chord with the tick and it would be 1 and 3 or is this the same im confused ^^
Finger style rules! Joe, thanks so much for everything. What model Maton guitar is in this video and do you feel that brand is better than a comparable size Martin? You’re very helpful and entertaining. Thanks again
Thanks Rob! This guitar is my signature model, the JR Signature. I love Martin guitars too but I feel Matons are the best plug-n-play stage guitars I’ve heard
It is low - I never measure it, but it sometimes times a couple of trips to the luthier to get it just the way i like it. I play with a fairly light touch, so my test is: when I play with my normal touch, there should be no buzzing. If I dig in and play heavier than normal, a little buzzing on the low E string is ok by me.
Fingerstyle Rules! Great tips there Joe, especially the relaxing muscles part. I've had to keep reminding myself that, as I have tendonitis and this helps.
Fingerstyle Rules! Love these tips. As a beginner I sometimes find it to know what to focus on. These tips are really useful. Thank you, Joe. Much appreciated. 👍
Thank you! I don't teach Bye Bye Blackbird in any of my courses but if you are looking to learn fingerstyle, my Complete Fingerstyle series is a good option, also my Guitar Synergy channel has a Fingerstyle Songbook section with dozens of songs. Cheers and all the best, Joe
I would say its the opposite Joe most people concentrate on the fretting hand ...even though most top guitarists say 80% comes from the picking hand...finger style and flat picking..a guitar set up with a good low action takes care of a lot of the fretting hand problems...there is nothing but a good technical approach saves the picking hand .
No matter how low your action is, if your left hand is not relaxed you will struggle. Most intermediate players I see have a left hand that I think is too tense. It’s tricky to get it to relax, but it’s so important. But I totally agree having a guitar that is well set up makes things easier.
Thanks Joe. I’m on it!
Finger style Rules!! 😅 Thanks for the info!!

My setup is as low as I can get it without buzz. It is similar to TE’s. I find there is a real sweet spot.

Your action looks extremely low from the video - is it? Do you know how low? (My luthier always wants it higher than I do!)
