      +Uniquely Madison To be fair, I made three practice Lady Baltimore cakes before the final one because I am not that great at baking! LOL! But the mason jar cakes really ARE that easy!

    I'm glad I searched for the Lord Baltimore cake. The title of this video gave me a laugh - I've heard of this cake! It was a favourite of mine in my youth (during the 70s). I subscribed to your channel. Thanks so much! 😍❤️

    Love that Sweets of America picture! I'm Canadian so not familiar with it, but I'm about to waste a good hour of my life researching it because, yum, sweets! :)

    I've made a Lady Baltimore cake, and it IS wonderful! My good old Fanny Farmer cookbook has all those traditional and basic recipes, and I wouldn't do without it. :) I really enjoy your UA-cam videos!

      +Making It Modern I've actually given new versions as wedding shower gifts, because they have all the basic recipes plus a lot of old ones. She published her first book in the late 1800's, introducing the use of standard measurements in cooking. The cookbooks even include milk toast! :)

    So pretty! I've never tried flowers before, my brother used to like eating little flowers as a baby and it was pretty cute.

      +lady12480 Flowers are a wonderful and easy way to decorate a cake, but I don't love how they taste, so I recommend removing them before serving.

      You can sugar flowers much like you would with fruit and that makes them much better if you actually plan to eat them. What I learned as a taste tester for my ma (who makes wedding cakes) petals are OK, the centers are sometimes horribly bitter, and you don't really want to chomp into a stem. Sugared rose petals are lovely and light enough that they don't change the cake flavor!

    I've heard of it. I've been staring at the recipe in my early 1960's Betty Crocker cookbook, wanting to make it.

    I always add a teaspoon of vanilla to baking mixes - cookies, cakes, and brownies. So it was fun to see you do that, too.
    I gotta admit, though, that only brownie mixes come close to the “from scratch” versions. That’s probably because the basic flavours are stronger.

    I heard about this on the Great Gildersleeve show - Margery learned to make it on one episode ... I've been looking for a recipe ever since - this is the FIRST recipe I've ever found

    The frosting used in this recipe is called 7 minute frosting, and you can make it on the stove if you have a double boiler and a rotary beater. Same ingredients, just with less dirty dishes.

    I liked the original much more than the cake mix variation. You could use any other vanilla cake made from scratch.

    Well my recollection is that the original Lady Baltimore Cake had two icings, a hard one and a soft one. Is thst not correct? I remember this because it made the cake exceedingly sweet.

    This would be a great dessert either way, but I love the idea of bringing the Mason jar version along on a picnic. And the dried fruit and nut filling -- yum! But do you think dates could be subbed for figs? Not a fan of fig seeds.

    • @Theglamoroushousewife1
      @Theglamoroushousewife1  8 років тому

      +Theresa Novak Yes, I think dates could easily be substituted. Im not a huge fig fan either, though I do prefer them dried instead of fresh.

    • @Zelli52
      @Zelli52 7 років тому

      Theresa Novak dried figs taste very sweet almost like candies. I reccomend the golden figs the sugar practically seeps out of them!

      That's how ladies were supposed to eat, so as not to get lipstick on the silverware. Like many vintage things, it looks very unnatural.
