The Abandoned Nickelodeon: Outta Control and the UK Home of Barney | Expedition Alton Towers

- Join us on Expedition Alton Towers as we look back at the iconic history of Talbot Street, Cred Street, Cloud Cuckoo Land and the future home of The World Of David Walliams. Here was a short lived terrible attraction called Nickelodeon Outta Control which ended up being abandoned after just 2 years..... oh and it was also the UK home for Barney The Dinosaur.

@@ExpeditionThemePark If it's anything like that christmas special they did it will be an increase of my anti-depressants.
Great video as always though
Next we’re going to open a ride from the Demon Dentist where you have to make sure she doesn’t pull out all your teeth
Guess that's how we got the internet spelling
I wonder when Dogman will come by.
I love the enthusiasm of the audience at the Barney show.
😆
It's just...wow. Simply...wow. *clap.......clap.......clap*
At least they're being honest
This is pretty much the normal enthusiasm of British audiences
In America the kids would’ve been shouting their lungs out for Barney! 😂😂😂
I remember when I was a child queueing for the Froghopper. Got right to the front of the queue when all of a sudden some sort of pipe burst and sprayed hydraulic fluid everywhere. Took me a bit to realise it wasn’t a feature of the ride.
An extra bonus!
Alton Towers has such an interesting, weird history and a mixed identity, makes me want to see it for myself but for now I appreciate your videos giving us a piece of that experience!
Hope you get to go one day!
Expedition Theme Park here and Efteling!
It's a fantastic quirky park with a fascinating history. I've grown up with it and the only reason I haven't been in a few years is because my son has been a little young to fully appreciate it (I've always thought of it as a park that's more for ages 9/10 and up than really little ones).

Barney humming the Nemesis song was something I didn't know I needed in my life.
What is the timestamp for the clip??
Jacob Coburn I mean, it’s the theme to the whole park
Admiral Eclipse 0:44
The nemesis song is a different song, he hums hall of the mountain king which is the theme song for the whole park
It’s In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg. It’s a classical piece, and it’s used as the theme for the park in advertisements.
Much as I find Barney annoying, I do find him humming “hall of the mountain king” funny.
Haha yeah
Hey! Barney is not annoying! He's stupendous!
@matt God it's a joke
He is very annoying dumb stupid and awful
Wy is everyone so pissy about Barney there is nothing wrong with him
You had to deal with both Barney and Blobby?! The 90s were a hard time for British parents.
The dream team!
I'd take Blobby over Barney any day. At least the former was irritating on purpose.
Ralphie Raccoon Solid point
The 90s were hard on everyone older than 6
I mean, Blobby is WAY less annoying than Barney
I had no clue there was so much history behind this part of the park, all I knew about was the thrill rides.
There is!
>TFW you have to bring in the *_Barney Removal Squad_*
I think the Nickelodeon land that used to be in Universal Hollywood was also forgotten, I barely see anyone talk about it. Barney was also popular in the UK? Didn't know that
He was!
Yeah, I didn't actually realise until today he was an American thing, I never really thought about it.
But yeah, he was popular, you ask anyone around and above the age of 20 and they'll tell ya.
Barney did quite well internationally (and still does in part of the world), but he was massive here in the US. Back in 1992, after Barney & Friends premiered on PBS (Barney was a home video series prior to this, but the TV show was what boosted his popularity), the purple guy literally drew tens of thousands to shopping malls (40,000 showed up at a mall in Maryland). He basically was the Elvis of the preschool set.
Yeah, no one talks about that? How about Expedition Theme park covering it?
multiple UA-cam channels have talked about the Nickelodeon Studios in Florida
I remember Yesterworld talk about the Nickelodeon theming in his videos on abandoned Nick and Hanna Barbera rides.
Ya
I had no idea the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ride had such a long history! I was waiting the whole time for it to be mentioned, but I'm glad it's going to get its own episode!
Is no one talking about Rocko getting a prostate exam at 4:10? I forgot how dirty that kid's show was allowed to be.
Right haba
Testicle exam, prostate is a finger up the ass, no coughing.
Now adays they would never do that , to scared somebody might get offended
One of my earliest memories is seeing the barney show at alton towers and I remember that froghopper being my favourite ride! So happy to hear the history behind these attractions
Hope you enjoy
Oh wow! Seeing the darker, dorkier parts of your country’s theme park past is the main reason I ADORE your channel, Sam! And yet you do so lovingly and not in a mocking style, and you treat my country’s lesser lights (and quite of few of its higher achievements too) with the same amount of respect...it is greatly appreciated! This video was a Lot of fun! Thanks!
Thank you!

Would be funny if the world of David walliams had a come fly with me airport experience and a little Britain dark ride/show 😂
Haha yeah
Let's reintroduce the "we got no coffee" character, that wasn't a problematic event at all 😂
@@CommanderEliza problematic? How so it's just a comedy. My idea would be to utilise the old nick building and turn the inside into the come fly with me airport terminal and after going through precious' coffee shop, check in, security you board either fly lo or a our lady air plane for a 'ride' this will be like a simulator and will use a similar system to that of a flight training sim. After you go through "duty free" which sells merch including snowflake, ice lollies and themed merch for those offended .
The old theatre could be another dark ride but obviously 18+ only and you're warned about it mature nature. You take a trip round little Britain with all the characters in different scenes
"Yeah I know "
This didn't age well
This has brought back all the memories, you forgot GoGoGo! I’m guessing Toyland Tours will be getting it’s own video? Barney was amazing, we still have Barney stockings at xmas in our household.
Yeah it will get a video!
I’m moving to the UK soon and very excited to go to Alton Towers for the first time
Hope you enjoy it!!
Have you moved yet?😂
Good luck it's terrible down here 🤣🤣🤣 lm being serious. Unless your rich then your good otherwise stay where u are mate.
Update: just went to Alton Towers for a mini honeymoon and I live in the UK now 😎

"Alton Towers is special because it cares."
Merlin: "Aahahahaha"
Excellent Video - thank you, it has filled in some gaps for me of the history of this area. I really hope this bring back life to this area of the park .
If I'd heard there was a themed fun house attraction at Alton Towers in the 90's, my first thought would not be nickelodeon! Shame there never was any deal with CITV, that would have been epic.
Yesss
Awesome to see this. When I visited it had a sad dead end here and lots of boarding up, with not much saying whether anything was going to be developed. Signage still said 'Cloud Cukoo Land' but there was no attractions except one sad looking shop. It did make one curious about why part of the park seemed to have been left barren of attractions.
The old footage in this is everything. I have really fond memories on the nickelodeon attraction- I was just the right age for it. I wish they’d bring back characters, parades and shows. I loved Henry and Henrietta
Love the fact that you put the Banjo Kazooie Cloud Cuckoo Land music in there at the end! Awesome game! Oh and great video too. Memories return!
It's so surreal to think that all that 90's stuff is just sitting in there. Albeit Google image results show that it's been pretty gutted. I wanna know what happened to that Krumm statue at 10:47.
Thank you for all this new content! Great stuff!!
Thank you!
I expected a court battle between Alton Towers and LEGO over the name “Cloud Cuckoo Land”

Oh wow! This brings back so many memories, we would go on holiday to Alton towers at least once a year and my days would be filled with watching the Barney show, going in the play ground for hours, maybe ride the frog hopper and sitting in KFC waiting to watch my brother on oblivion... And that boat ride!! I’ll never forget that!! Ahhh so much nostalgia
The good days!
Oh I love your UK videos. Keep em coming!
Thanks!
So sad how much bad luck this section has! I wonder with all the abandon buildings, it makes feel creepy walking around there. You've done alot on Florida parks, but I'm still waiting for Weeki Wachee! Their famous mermaids are amazing and their underwater shows are the best!
I will make that for sure
Great video! And your intro song is so good, really fits the classic amusement park feel.
Thank you!
Great video as always! Keep up the good work
Tha k you!
Oh cool, the 90s vomited in the UK too. It's like a 5 year old just discovered colors and shapes and used all of them at once. 🤩
If there is one thing I have learned in recent years, it's "Do not theme anything around current children's tv." Children's television is always changing and not much sticks around. This dates everything themed around the popularity of that tv show and often makes the themed product/place/whatever also dated and unable to stick around long term.
If I were running the park, I know what I'd suggest.
The key to long term success is to make something timeless, so theme it around something that will always be relevant to the park itself... That being the park itself.
Hear me out.
Like the Air-Galactica cafe, there should be more themed restaurants or buildings. Then, you dedicate an area to children's indoor amusement. You could have a stanwick lakes type deal and have an indoor drop tower, or a frog ride or teacups or carousel or something. You also need a cafe and climbing frame area because kids lap that up.
Now, back to the original idea... An Alton Towers themed Alton Towers attraction. Alton Towers is know for it's advertising, it's history, it's desire to scare and it's willingness to do new things... So why not combine that? Have a haunted house that is haunted by the spirits of the forgotten attractions of the past. You could have The Beast and The Ripsaw could be enemies that seem to chase you around. Maybe an area could be underground and be pulsing as it is being posessed by Sub Terra. Maybe you are being guided by old man Corkscrew on a screen but he is unable to help you more because he is stuck as his spirit is stuck in place like the piece of old track from Corkscrew at the entrance. Maybe the whole point is that the spirits of the coasters were bolted for safety but now they are gone the spirits roam free. Could be like a history tour and a haunted house in one and you could get a shit tonne of nostalgic merchandise for long time park goers who miss those rides, feeling that Alton has not forgotten them.
Just a thought.
Man I absolutely love your videos and your editing skills.... keep up all the great videos bud... and look forward to seeing ya at hhn30 this year
Thank you and see you there!
I honestly adore your videos. The research and love put in always amaze me. Also you make me wish i knew of these lost lands sooner xD
Great video! I remember Barney but had no idea about outta control! Makes sense when my first visit was in 1999. LOVE expedition Alton Towers! More please :P x
Thanks
Loving the channel's uploads as always dude, keep it up 👍 ill never understand why I love theme park videos so much but... they're just so irresistible to me 😂
Thank you so much
Got some crazy nostalgia from that cheesy music.
I went to the Outta Control near its opening when I was little and was asked to be filmed for a cutaway for the channel. Something along the lines of "I'm outta control at Alton towers, coming up next it's Rugrats."
Never saw it as I didn't have sky but I got a bunch of merch for doing it.
Love the use of the Tooie track from Cloud Cuckooland at the end there lol, don't think that went unnoticed
You really need to start an expedition Pleasure Beach series! You have 125 years of history at your disposal!!! And a really exciting future for the park!
Love seeing a English park on here, compared to America we don’t have many. Love it hearing about what we offer, the good bad and ugly lol keep up your awesome and informative work, great watch :) ❤️

Another fantastic video, Sam! As a massive Barney fan, I was pretty happy the purple guy's time at Alton Towers was discussed amongst the rest of Cred Street/Talbot Street/Cloud Cuckooland/*insert name here*'s history.
Thank you!
Barney show is like a core memory. First place I went with my stepdad on our own when I was like 4.... still have my Barney teddy to this day 🥰
Alton Towers, the greatest theme park I'll probably never be able to visit
One day!
I remember this, weirdly enough I had completely forgotten about it but the moment I read the name I was like "oh yeaaahhh I remember going there" lol.
That music at 2:57 as well, now that's some nostalgia.... and the further I go into the video the more nostalgic it becomes... I miss these days of my life and Alton Towers... they were good times...
10:20 i just unlocked memories i never knew i had in that place.
i used to love cloud cuckcoo land as a kid but i forgot everything that was there in the area. i only remembered the driving school.
I went on the nickelodeon ride back when it was open. I think i must have gone on it near the end of its time as there was no que to get on it. Hoping the David Walliams stories can be extended to further attractions/buildings within that area. It's always been an troubled area. If coaster corner could be converted into an indoor dark-ride that would make great use of quite a large area of land.
Great video always good content
Thanks!
I love the Toyland Tours music in the background.
It's one of my all time favorite pieces of music.
Honestly we need more Alton Towers episodes
There’s so much that’s come in and out of that park
Oh scoot
I got to the end where the Toyland ride and everything else that’s ever gone there is teased.
I know that's why they are called cliffhangers but God damn you're good at cliffhangers
Hahah thanks I think
Awesome to see alton towers here, I've been going a few times a year since,, maybe 5 years old? love to see other people talk about it because the history is incredibly interesting and I barely see it mentioned elsewhere. and about the dark ride now used in the dungeon, I'm not sure if this is relevant but alton towers actually sold quite a few of the props on ebay after it was closed down. entrance sign, animatronics, things like that. so someone somewhere has augustus gloop in their living room, haha.
Weird but as usual so much information and research
Such a good vid ; still waiting for splashlanding hotel
Thanks!
When I went for the first time, it was still Cloud Cuckoo Land, but I think it was starting to drift away from that. It was when the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ride was still on and from what I can recall, Ug Land was close by
Hex is a very underestimated ride. Also I'd love to revisit MetroLand in gateshead one more time.
That clip of Kylie Minogue's I Should Be So Lucky playing in one of the videos made me so happy.
the clip actually shows her there riding the ride.
This is the UK version of Defunctland!
T G, Yes it is the UK version of Defunctland
I've always thought a land themed around an old style travelling fair would be a great addition to one of the smaller parks. Carousel, chair-o-plane, helter-skelter, ghost train, dodgems, pirate boat and lots of sideshows. They could really go to town and have some fun with it - have steam organs, candy floss, toffee apples, old-style coloured lights and the staff in period dress. I'd be there - I'd love to see some vintage fairground rides properly preserved and maintained - and I'm sure the little ones would like it too, at least as much as all these cheesy kids' TV tie-ins.
Damn this really interesting. You got the U.K. Parks down it cool
Thanks!
Alton Towers is my favourite theme park in the world I maybe biased cause I’m form the UK but hey! It’s so good 👍 I would love to see a video about the fume at Alton towers, bubble works at chessington and loggers leap at Thorpe park as I’m pretty sure there from the same company and it’s kinds suspicious how all the rides are being replaced or rethemed 🤔
Im subcribed
I like your vids
"Doll Museum" what a weird name for hell
3:08 That kid with the ice cream.
Curse you for getting that Barney song stuck in our heads. Lol. It’s all good. Just sad that part of the park has been redone so many times and some of it abandoned. So sad.
Yeah agreed
One show that always sticks quite providently in my mind from Nickelodeon is Rupert the bear. I could easily see him appearing in a British park, but not an attraction centered on the channel I was watching him on. It seems funny to me that I find nothing odd about watching British shows here in the US, as I have done so my whole life, yet I find it odd to think of the reverse.
HA! I’ve lived through Veggie tales, the gummy bear song, and baby shark! Your Barney songs have no effect on me sir! ...won’t you say you love...damn you...DAMN YOU!
Hahaha
I subscribed just because your favorite show is Kenan and Kel
How have I not known about this?!
It didn't last long
OMG what is that song playing at the end? It’s fantastic!!!
WHY must you torture me!!!!! Not a question! Those songs!!!!
As a theme park nerd, I didn't know some of this stuff, so thank you! Keep up the good work (but maybe not torture us anymore with songs like this again) ;)
It'll always be Cloud Cuckoo Land to me. Was weird to see how empty and lifeless it was in 2018, as opposed to when I first went there in 2009/2010. At least it's getting new life as part of the David Walliams theme.
SO I MISSED THIS BECAUSE UA-cam TOOK ME OFF NOTIF SQUAD
AAAH
Is that Cloud Cuckoo Land music from Banjo Tooie i hear at the end?
Okay but the Banjo Kazooie music at the end. 😂
Loved the barney advert! The best advert ever made! And no I'm not joking!
I vividly remember it on TV
Something about Barney singing In the Hall of the Mountain King just seems so ominous, like he's a serial killer taunting his would-be victims.

2:59 - OMG THE TOYLAND TOURS THEME 😱
Nemesis: Wait, Nickelodeon? We had them here? Bloody hell, how long ago was that, two decades?
Oblivion: Ugh, don't get me started on the fairgrounds, it changed themes more times than TNA's name.
Air: The fairgrounds were definitely a rare problematic area for the Towers. We'd given most of the attention in this park to the big 7 rides, and that area unfortunately got lost in the fold.
Rita: Man, if I was in charge of the fairgrounds, I'd give a huge middle finger to everyone who complained about the noise. You dudes had no rights to ruin a historic part of this resort!
Th13teen: I like that they've always tried new things with that area, like the Nickelodeon attraction and that Barney show. Basically, anything that didn't really fit the theming of the rest of the park went to the grounds.
Smiler: It was a very experimental area for the park, I guess you could say. Maybe if it had a big name ride such as mine, it probably would've stayed afloat.
Wicker Man: ... Why are y'all looking at me? Do you guys honestly think me and my tribe cursed the fairgrounds? ... (sighs) Well, you're right... My bad. This one's on me.
I remember having a McDonald’s at a area at Alton towers which had a cartoon car crashed into the roof, I don’t think they have McDonald’s inside anymore but it’s still a fast food area.
