as a girl who started playing vrchat at the age of 14, there were an unacceptable amount of grown adults who tried to talk to me, and were overall very weird to me, all while knowing my age. of course, people under 13 should not be playing. and honestly, as an adult now (18), i think the minimum age should be raised from 13 because it can really be an unsafe environment for younger people…

Parents had literally no idea because there was no way for them to know, no way to report the person because there's almost zero evidence of it and in the end they got away with not only doing it to me but to other 14-16 year old girls because consequences basically don't exist in vrc. Being harassed for months (got put on a KOS) after coming out about my experience, no way to stop him and the "you could've just taken the headset off" comments drove me away from the VR community entirely. I remember how fun the old VRChat was.
Some couple of years ago, after finding myself an Oculus Rift and then seeing some of the first few "VRChat in a nutshell" videos by Jameskii, I felt inspired to go onto the platform myself. When I got on, even though I was way younger than the minimum join age (10-11 i think?, 15 now), I remember messing around, being quiet for a bit and then going down a deep dive into the VRChat community, but not ever really letting go the silliness and fun of old VRChat. And, as the years rolled by, I've felt like I've been lagging behind the others, feeling like I'm stuck back in 2017 [or '18] (thinking of it now that's a really, really great thing). And so, as I come to find this video and your channel, this just reminds me as to how shitty of a place VRChat has become over the years. Hell, even when I first joined I didn't have to block avatars or crank my safety settings up the ass just to play on the platform for a little while. Back then, people were having fun, making avatars that were more optimized than the ones pumped out today, and the platform wasn't even a business; it was a place to fuck around and actually socialize with people. But now, things have drastically changed and there are so many serious problems its hard for me to wrap my head around them.
One time, when i went into one of the publicly known furry servers to interview them about what they thought about something like a news story that happened recently at the time or whatever, I cant remember, but as soon as I set foot into that wasteland people were talking about their ZOOPHILLIA, openly. As well as there being minors around and shit like that but since then it hasn't been any better. One time I joined a public server i heard something from spawn coming from my right. Come to find out that two people were having e-sex in a bathroom, full tilt, leg trackers and shit like that with total disregard for everyone else. Its so fucked, man. But that isn't the worst. This story is the most recent and it passes on as the worst offender yet:
I was bored and I had nothing to do since most servers were filled with suggestive anime people staring at themselves all day so I decided that I was gonna go shoot the shit in a McDonald's server. I join in, standard stuff, kids around but I'm like whatever, but whenever I cross into the McDonald's, I come across something that I would have never expected. When I cross through those golden gates I find someone with an avatar but not just any avatar, it is an image of straight-up child pornography, on full display, for all the little kiddies and whomever to behold.
This was only a couple of months ago, and I worry for what I might see if I go on again. I don't know if you have watched it yet, but this youtuber named Brandon FM has created some amazing videos surrounding VRChat around some of the problems the platform faces, and I really, really recommend it; He even did a video on Sappho. I'm done talking my head off about these VRC stories, have a good one.
(By the way, sorry if sentence spacing isn't good or whatever, but it should break up the key points somewhat alright)
Edit: Forgot to say that I'm a big fan of your content Jax :)))))

I disagree with the kids. I don't understand how kids creaming is funny or being little goblins is entertaining. Most cases they're little brats that doesn't respect other players even in their own age group.
Rarely there will be a kid who's super calm and doesn't want to annoy everyone. THOSE kids are welcoming.
But this isn't a bad take overall.
I don't think VRChat as a game bad but the bad actors is definitely noticeable within the playerbase.
VRChat is boring for players looking for fun minigame types. BUT it is nice social experience with the right people of course.
    Glad you mention Tower Unite.
It's definitely a better game if you want to actually DO something.
I still play it this very day. Big thanks to my Left 4 Dead pal for gifting me it years ago.
I say the price is a great road block to prevent most of the bad children out along with other players who's looking for trouble. Which I don't think that's the dev's plan. lol
And because Steam Workshop exists, people can't try to upload NSFW crap without getting banned outright. There IS nsfw condos though, but that's only when the player host it.

It's unfortunate what's happening, I remember spending a lot of time with some popular avatar creators who made great original stuff, but the terminally online types who were jealous of their "vrchat celebrity status" stirred up a lot of drama. Driving many of the creators to delete their accounts or just quit the game over the past year. A bunch of the avatar worlds being put out there now are just copy paste garbage. Too many people take this game too seriously and it's gutting it. Using mods used to balance these things out. A lot of people used them to be annoying or to troll but I miss being able to send the 40 year-old e-daddy flexing his underage discord kittens to the shadow realm.

I wish this video would concentrate more on theorizing or defining why the VRChat core community has been on a seemingly continual downward spiral and not devolve into either generalizing a specific part of the community or cherry-picking a list of specific streamers or horror story weirdos. For example, I feel that a majority of VRChat streamers are uncreative and boring, and by generalizing it to a very specific niche, you're painting a target on that generalized group, whether it's furries or "foreign" streamers who might not have the same views of the contextualization of content that is produced. It just so happens that, because of the nature of VRChat, furry or oversexualized avatars are popular. I think that this can be further applied to the NSFW aspects of it. The core community of VRChat is at an age where experimentation and interest in NSFW things simply exist. VRChat just gives people a platform to explore those avenues, but the fact remains: a good number of people are just pervs. Likewise, you don't need to witch hunt specific examples of weirdos. With a large enough sample size, you're going to find weird or criminal people within it. I'm not defending them or condoning any of their actions in the least, but bad stories of questionable nature could be found in any aspect of a community. There's no need to devote an entire section of the video to name-dropping specific examples. Instead, I wish you concentrated on WHY VRChat gives such people opportunities they would not normally have to perform those degenerate actions, and the EFFECT these kinds of stories had on the community as a whole.
All-in-all though, this is a great video that summarizes a growing problem in the VRChat community, especially three points: the splintering of the community into smaller and exclusive niches that become increasingly difficult to find or "get into," the homogeneous content that leads newcomers to believe representations of said content are an actual representation of what goes on in the game itself, and the conflict between those newcomers and the closed-circuit societal behaviors present. Those are all very big points that a lot of people in the VRChat community have noticed and worry about, since there doesn't seem to be a very easy fix to change the trend. This is especially true with features are pushed and implemented by the VRChat devs, like the Groups system, which further incentivizes people to splinter off into their own small niches. The information provided is incredibly well-summarized, and it was a true joy to find it as the highest suggested VRChat video on UA-cam instead of just another meme video with the same burned-out voice changer joke that's been done for five years now.
Just as a side note, your math is also probably incorrect. 24,000 concurrent users is just a snapshot of how many users are playing at that moment, not how many people play VRChat as a whole. Meanwhile, 45,000 people are how many are in the Reddit community as a whole. The NSFW portion of the community is certainly a significant portion of the population, but does not make up nearly an overwhelming percentage of the population as stated.

While playing devils advocate on the side of some of the veterans. vrchat is always a social platform but not always a game which I can see why newer people would be confused nowadays with that info. Framing the video from the pov of it being a game kinda takes away from what made the game successful and takes the nuance away from why veteran players act they way we do sometimes. I was a young kid starting vrchat in 2017 and now am going to college so the context I mean is We didn't grow up with it as a game but really as a social so with the way the platform has changed over time many of the older players get bored, dislike the direction/toxicity, or become nilistic as the second life they've enjoyed for the growing years of their life isn't the same anymore and at what point should they move on.

Another alternative I see coming up in the future is S&Box. Its a spiritual successor to GMod made by the same devs, and itll have VR support. It runs on the same engine as Half-Life: Alyx (Source 2) and will basically be GMOD, but with a wider variety of games that can be created on it. Its more of a game development platform than it is a game in of itself. Honestly if a social VR gamemode is made in it, I could genuinely see it being a major competitor to VRC, with how much more modable and open ended itll be.

I would not call it in shambles. The VRC community had its various areas that while some should remain fully separated they all have their meeting points and some of those meeting points shouldn't exist. Every community has its own problems and since VRC is the primary way of social VR it gets a ton of attention focused at its negative portions since people loooove looking at the bad things over good things
Plenty of us do our best to keep the younger players out of the areas they should not be in but its not like we will stop every single case of that from happening, and I'm just saying that as one example. I feel the video is basically just ignoring the good parts of the VRC community just to make it look bad by showcasing all of the bad.

As a long time VRChat player of almost 6 years now that has been active intensely inside of the community and has build his own community off of this game, I agree with pretty much everything said in this video and I absolutely love the shade thrown to some of the communities in vrchat by you.
It's saddening how far the game has fallen and how different it is now from when I used to play actively with the friends I've made through that game. I've joined the game at the age of 17 in 2017 because of a popular streamer back in the days who I loved to watch (Drekwiz). I've since met many friends on the game and even flew out to the US in 2019 to meet up with some of them (I'm from europe). That week has honestly been the most fun of my life and I am still friends with that entire group. My biggest interest in the game has always been the Avatars and that you were able to create your favorite characters for the game. I've been making avatars since 2018, tons of them public and have, with the help of those avatars and the worlds I've build for them, since created a fairly large discord server with a comparably small but very fun to be around community.
I am still active in my own community and I am still actively making avatars, although mostly for a Patreon nowadays. But I have almost entirely stopped playing the game and stopped being involved anywhere outside my own community.
I share many of the same opinions about VRChat as you do, with the borderline nsfw and boring streamers, the massive and honestly just cringe nsfw community, the lewd avatars, and people taking themself far too seriously. The "Quest kiddies" is another story. While I also very much dislike them its for other reasons that are not mentioned in this video.
If you are ever feeling to making a followup to this video I would be happy to offer myself to give some input as someone who has been actively involved for almost 6 years.
Ps. Also just found ur channel through the "Twitter Philes pt.2" video, great work on that as well.

As a 14-year-old on VRChat. I have seen weird stuff in game before like one time when I saw a vore avatar when I was playing a fnaf related game. and I just blocked the user no questions asked. so, I want to say keep all NSFW stuff in private servers or game designed for 18+ people and have better moderation on those games. and if you see an inappropriate avatar on VRChat, an annoying kid you don't like, or a troll. Block, mute, or hide them in game. but anyone under the age of 13 should not play the game and they should add an age rating system in the game for worlds. also I have met some really young people on the game, like one time when I was recruiting people for a star wars RP group I saw a user who was 5 years old that made me think, he's got really shit parents. last thing but in the star wars RP group we had a war with another battalion in the fashion of "this is supposed to be fun" but eventually we one then later on our discord server they join and doxxed threaten to doxx the commander even sending him his IP in text through DMs. but anyway, VRChat has just declined in quality now And I want the devs to improve it.

It's sad to see so many people having a poor experience in VRchat. Some people just would like to come home after work or school and relax. What relaxing is to them is different for everyone. I see gatekeeping from all age groups and it's really sad. Adults and kids alike should be able to enjoy a good social platform tailored just for them! Sometimes older age groups just want to sit down and talk about their experiences in a sonic the hedge hog avatar. Younger groups are still making their own experiences, so it makes sense that its boring to sit around talking about or do old people things!
People older than you will discount your experiences because you're still young. Younger people will force you out of your own spaces because you're too old and need to become some cog in a machine. Instead of trying to kick each other off of a platform, we should be discussing how to give everyone an appropriate space to be themselves safely. Even if that means providing a new and safe platform!

  • @Fembro
    @Fembro Рік тому +4

Your point on kids in VRC is kinda uninformed. Most people from my experience and my own personal opinion don't like kids in VR when they are in designated adult spaces. If I wanna go to a drinking world and socialize with adults and talk about adult things and wear skimpy avis I shouldn't have to moderate myself because 10 year old timmy's parents are irresponsible and letting him wander into spaces where he shouldn't be. I have to stop what I am doing to try and get the kid to leave on their own or get a vote kick started which usually doesn't even work. I could just block them but the more responsible thing to do is to get them to leave because it isn't safe for them nor do they belong in the area socially speaking. The most ideal thing (on the dev side) is to have VRC implement a certified 18+ tag that you can put on avis, worlds, and instances so that we can reasonably separate the adult playerbase from the younger playerbase and generally avoid situations like Sappho from repeating more easily. Or at the very least have the devs make a PSA to parents about the dangers of VRC.

(roblox has a very similar problem) so really i would say the kids aren't the problem and neither is vrchat its parents and disgusting child predators who are at fault (also most of us love vrchat for the amount of freedom it gives so stricter moderation isnt really an option.. i can imagine how much the devs are struggling over this) really nice video btw

He was never Banned or even demoted by staff officially. He himself completely deleted all 17 thousand DMs we had on discord and switched accounts and vanished
Recently I found out he has now moved onto VrChat, and has used a bit of the money we earnt on Rec Room together (it has UGC featured like roblox) to purchase full body tracking for a 16 year old so they can...well. You can guess.
I have his Name, his address, his parents full names (bought his house documents to find that one out) and where he works (hes a karate instructor for kids)
Just thought I'd share, I keep thinking about it and it's pretty traumatic to say the least. Might be worth looking into as this isn't the first time something has happened on Rec Room

There are multiple crashing/hacking groups that WILL pick on little kids, the suggestive content that you can just come across that kids can and will get a hold of (I saw a 10 yr old kid running around in the black cat once in an avatar designed to ERP) etc.

Kids are unashamed and very chaotic, they know how to have fun and I feel a lot of people have become disconnected with the concept that kids aren't horrible and that we all used to be kids at one point.

generally the children of vrchat fall into 2 or 3 categories
the generally chill but just happens to be younger group or the group that has a higher pitched voice because puberty screwed them over
then you have the essentially phone/ipad kids who their parents only bought them the headset to get them to stop bothering the parents who do not monitor or in most cases actually care what their child does (causes these children to behave like the worst people in existence going around yelling slurs and cursing and acting incredibly entitled)
then you have the children who have the mentality of "Im old enough to know whats going on" and then go around hunting for the most nsfw content in the game
In a lot of cases the child is literally just someone that their parents bought them a headset and then the parents expecting you the random unknown vrchat player to babysit for them

There was an instance where a guy from a discord community I'd been in for years was a literal groomer. And he did some SUUUUUPER weird shit with one of the girls in VR Chat, bro was 19 or 20 at the time and she was like 15-16. The guy wasn't reprimanded much aside from being made fun of for the weird situation, and partly because the girl was doing weird shit too and partly starting it, leading to both parties being equally made fun of.
He finally did get banned and everything relating to him got completely WIPED, as months later he actually DID groom a different 15/16 year old girl..
The server owner actually felt really bad about this due to how obvious the signs were due to various sus incidents made by the guy who turned out to be a groomer.

The world section made me realize that SOMEHOW furry lobbies are more tame than normie ones. I don’t think I’ve ever gone to a furry lobby and seen people either making out or smacking each other’s ass. On a more serious note, grooming is a real, serious problem, especially in vrchat where most people won’t get hurt for their degeneracy. I’ve personally ran into one, and even though I ended up blocking them before things got to bad, I know not everyone is that lucky.

It's legit spreading everywhere and at this point its becoming just like VRChat where a ton of the community knows about this side, after the pandemic it truly blew up thanks to Meepcity and many other smaller factors that lead to Roblox today: A game with a huge ERP side that you can find just by looking up Snowbunny or Blackbull.

The focus on the negativity seems to be done with the intent to devalue rhe positives of the platform. Anybody that makes an account and plays the game for a few days will easily see that. Most people just want to hangout and talk, dance, watch movies, ect. 20k players is a thriving user base that a ton of games would be super lucky to hit such a population.

I've played the game in little spurts over the past 5 years and I know plenty of people who have played it and only a few speak about it with enthusiasm, most walk away from it talking about its weird community, clunky gameplay, and poor performance. I've ran into chill people, but it's rarer nowadays, as most of the time I see mirror gremlins and children dominating the platform. Most furries, rightfully so in many cases, also don't really want anything to do with you unless you're a furry as well, and despite their issues they're one of the more cohesive and fun communities to be around in this game

The worlds are not as they were in 2018 and theres less focus on fun and too many people who take the game wayyy to seriously. Such as this one time, a girl and her friend, both were young and sounded somewhere near 10-13, I talked with them both, both seemed equally hyper and one took one of the marker's and started to just run around the world, I didn't mind it as it didn't bother me.
I can see how SOME kids can be. Very immature and stuff, but some other kids can be very fun to hang out with. Imo, kids should be able to know how to avoid those things, parents also need to know how to avoid those things as well.

They will have there age in there bio then go around and offer lap dances and other nasty stuff. There is also those same age kids lying about there ages saying there 18+ and that's even worse because it can get people who are not trying to interact with underage people unknowingly interacting with them. A lot of the party groups I'm in started needing to see a form of id to even be allowed to join by using id apps or some other methods. That's another reason people don't want kids on vrc.
