thanks for sharing, you are good at explaining and public speaking. i started a small mixed orchard 2 years ago and looking forward to getting some pawpaw in the year to come.
I just put an order of Allegheny while watching your rating for Allegheny. I have several cultivars so far this year. Some have not yet arrived and some I have put in the ground and some are still in pot waiting for the right time plus I am still struggling with where I will put them. Thank you for this video. It helps deciding although I have bought everything the nursery in the town about 100 miles from here has and the rest from whatever and whenever Stark Brother has available and every time they have what I didn't already have available.
I know what you mean about the difference in taste between cultivars and wild ones. My first bite of a cultivar after years of eating wild one blew my mind!! I ended up buying 9 grafted cultivars after that!
Interesting video. One thing I've noticed after about fifty years of eating pawpaws, (all wild ones) some pretty good and some not, is that they all are lighter in color inside when just ripening but take on the orange color with time.
Overleese is one of our favorites, although it is tough to find the fruit anymore (so we decided to plant a tree!). It's a lot like sunflower but richer and a bit of melon flavor.
@@captiveroots3037 Thank you! Definitely sounds like a good one, I have ordered a tree that is on the way so I'm looking forward to tasting the fruit some time in the future. (pawpaw's are extremely rare in Sweden.)
Very likely! He did say that he had one of those. The fruits were all mixed up, so it was like a variety pack type of deal. It was really good, I'll say that much!
@@captiveroots3037 Not sure how I lived there for 25 years and never even heard of a pawpaw lol. When I moved to WV a few years ago is the first time I heard of them.
The York pawpaw festival has grown like crazy since we first went. The first year (2018 I think) it was pretty much a farm stand with a few booths and a handful of people. Last time we went in 2022 they had roads closed down, people directing traffic and probably a thousand plus people there. Plus a ton of vendors of all types. Crazy to see how pawpaw has become so popular! We thought we drove far, but there were people from 12 hours away who just wanted to taste a pawpaw.
please distinguish between pallet flavor & olfactory aromas. First your said strong, then mild, then very tropical, then mild. strong aroma & mild pallet? or mild as no wild aftertaste (SUNFLOWER)
While it's true you won't get the exact same fruit as the parents pawpaw are much closer to true than apples or many other fruits. Plus you can graft onto your seedlings! Since these come from an orchard it's likely that both parents were named varieties so the chance of good fruit is excellent.
I'm just hoping our homegrown fruits ripen soon! It's been cold here and frosted most nights lately... Not sure if that matters because this is our first year with fruit except for the 3 that made the decision and broke themselves off last year! Since those ripened well I'm think I'm safe to wait a week or so and then pick them if it gets really cold
@@captiveroots3037 Yeah the cold is coming early this year. I'm still finding wild fruit down here in Kentucky and we are in a cold snap with frost last night and tonight. Have you heard of the variety Summer delight I've heard it's super early ripening?

Thank you! Picking your first homegrown pawpaw is the coolest experience!
Great video! Please don't stop reviewing pawpaws & describing their flavors untill you have reviewed all named varieties.
I'll certainly do these videos each fall!

Allegheny is so good! Pretty much the perfect pawpaw, aside from it's smaller size

@@trippingwithpippy2317 we've had a few really good wild ones, but it's very rare .. I guess it's a lot like wild apples, many of which are spitters!

I've seen that too, and they take on a totally new dimension of flavor once that happens!
Thanks for the video, very educational! could you describe how does overleese pawpaw taste? I've not found much info online about it

wondering if you Planted the seeds from the "table guy" variety?
I did! They aren't doing much yet but they are small seedlings in the ground so hopefully next summer they will spring up a bit
YES!! I would have too! lol... maybe i'll buy a couple off you! Good job!!@@captiveroots3037
I always wondered if Juicy fruit gum was inspired by a paw paw ? 🤔
It could be! It's amazing how much certain pawpaws taste just like juicy fruit gum!
I think juicy fruit gum was inspired by a Jackfruit. On other hand some pawpaw varieties have flavor similar to jackfruit.
@@AH-of6td interesting, thanks for sharing ! 👍
Thanks for this, I'm now in the market for Allegheny, any guesses on the sweetest variety you tried?
So far I would say Allegheny... It's just so good! Overleese and Shenandoah too!
Have you ever found out wich variety the bubble gum flavored pawa paw was?
No, sadly there's no way to know for sure.
Bubble Gum was probably a Maria's Joy seedling tree.
Very likely! He did say that he had one of those. The fruits were all mixed up, so it was like a variety pack type of deal. It was really good, I'll say that much!
Is this pawpaw festival in York PA?
It was!

Are you going to take down that wild pawpaw?
These came from the festival, so no need! However if I had a wild one like this I would graft into it and make it a multi variety tree
please distinguish between pallet flavor & olfactory aromas. First your said strong, then mild, then very tropical, then mild. strong aroma & mild pallet? or mild as no wild aftertaste (SUNFLOWER)
I'll try to remember that in the next video, thank you for the suggestion!
Sunflower is mild to medium flavor without the wild aftertaste.
Olá amigo!
Seria possível conseguirmos algumas sementes de paw paw contigo??
Custard must be an eastern thing WTF is custard & what does it taste like ?
Pudding basically... Or Greek yogurt
U must be from young generation, not knowing what custard is.
......Way down yonder in the papaw patch.
Seeds aren't worth saving. You will not get the same tree as the parent. A graft is the only way to guarantee quality fruit.
