- Beniamino Gigli (1890 - 1957) was an Italian opera singer (lyric tenor). He is widely regarded as one of the greatest tenors of his generation.
His affecting performance here of Handel's arioso, Care selve, ombre beate (Beloved forests, joyous shadows) was recorded in 1949.
Atalanta
Atalanta (HWV 35) is a pastoral opera in three acts by George Frideric Handel composed in 1736. It is based upon the mythological female athlete, Atalanta, the libretto (which is in Italian) being derived from the book La Caccia in Etolia by Belisario Valeriani. The identity of the librettist is not known.
I simply can't imagine possessing such talent.
Beautifully done...
Many thanks Ant for this welcome addition to my much appreciated library of your uploads. I think this work was written for a wedding in 1736 and I always considered it to be the happy version of ombre mai fu which followed two years later...hope you're well and thanks again. Jay
