I own a North American 40th anniversary mk8 with the DSG. Honestly, the steering wheel buttons have never been an issue, nor have i ever activated anything i didn't intend to. They work fine. Are they ideal? No, but they're not the most awful thing ever like a lot of UA-cam reviewers go on about. I can't speak on the larger infotainment since mine came with the poverty spec unit with the knobs and it works fine. Mine has frozen twice in the almost 2 years I've owned it and it feels relatively snappy. My car is tuned and makes near 400 wheel hp now and it's incredibly quick and a blast to drive.
Unpopular opionion perhaps - but I really like the touch operated steering wheel buttons in my pre-facelift MK8 GTI. Especially the sliders for volume and skipping from/to the next track are great IMO. I've also almost never falsely operated any of those touch buttons. You just have to get used to it for a couple weeks and then you can operate them perfectly through muscle memory. The regular plastic buttons are also fine - maybe a bit more intuitive for new users, even - but looks wise the cheap plastic is a big downgrade over the gloss black. Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand all the commotion around them.

hope they kept the ability to hold the down paddle to drop the box to the lowest available gear based on road speed for over taking, was great on the mk8
As someone thats about to buy a mk7 originally mk6 heres my thoughts on the looks. Mk6 sometimes look best when done right but mk7 looks best all round. Mk8 looks best at the front but the rear looks like TSI. Best looking GTI honestly is the mk7

They don’t have overly competent vehicle control, they don’t drive for a hobby, enjoyment, excitement nor professionally. They have busy lives with numerous distractions at any given time, etc etc. So if vehicle manufacturer’s find a way to help keep their driver’s safer as well as the companies bank account, they’re gonna take it. So I try to ACCEPT as much as I can whenever possible. It really helps W my sanity (whatever may b left of it).

as a person who daily drives 6th gen GTI and as a fan of all GTI's I can't see many reasons to upgrade to the newest model. 8.5 looks cool and I guess it's fast but thats all it gives.
I own a Mk8 GTI w/ DSG as a beater car along with my Camaro ZLE manual and Tesla S Plaid(wife's/family car)... The MK8 GTI infotainment took a little getting used to and could definitely be better, but the interior looks good and the car drives so great for a fun daily commuter, I don't even think about it! Definite improvement in the mK8.5, but not enough of a difference for me to trade up to. The GTI badge on the door looks tacky imo!
I think the new taillights look quite tasty. I'm a huge fan of all of these updates. It's such a shame they killed off the manual for the US market. I really would have considered this for my next car
Ive just got the 8.5 GTI, in pretty much the shown spec. For those who are currently looking into these here maybe a few thoughts. Engine / drivetrain - bloody fast for 195kW, most of the time responsive only limited to bad conditions, esc is too strong in my opinion DCC - is good but personally not quite comfy enough for me to call it a real daily driver, i guess its a preference FUEL - thirsthy af. im averaging 10l with a fast but moderate driving style (in de/nl), thats too much for such a “small” engine Infotainment - its ok. Does work, not really intuitive, no feel or anything, but gets the job done. Comfort - personally its too much road and windnoise for a real daily, its to quite for a sporty car features- rather plenty for a golf, chapeau ( soundsystem, headup, etc.) First impression in general, was better then expected So in my opinion the car is okay, neither really great nor really bad. Would never advise anybody to buy (im sorry but 60k is crazy), but for those owning a business they got vw (in de) has really good leasing deals on it frequently, (similiar to toyota aygo x etc.) so worth having an eye on. For those who are interested in how a modern car should be made (mostly) have a look at the cle450 from merc, truely great car especially for those who have to travel a lot, but prefer to do so with some fun (except sound!!)
Mk7.5 GTI will always be the last great GTI. Aggressive from the front and rear, feels like a proper cockpit inside and a mix between buttons for AC/heat and touchscreen and no stupid ipad infront of you while driving. Plus no light bar on the front which looks proper dorky 😂
as you said if you re looking for a fast not so much in your face daily it might be a perfect option.....as long as you re a vw fanboy as well....which i am (:

The 8 has a black hole in its light bar and feels not right. Seen a few 8.5 golfs here at night with the lit vow sign. Of all the night schemes on other Brands look off and awkward, for me at least. The VW 8.5 night logo makes it look more complete, if that makes any sense.

Yeah it feels like cars peaked sometime around 2013-2017. Proper engines, no OPF, no stupid warnings and assists for everything, no stupid touch everything and no ipads sticking out of the dash and you could still get a manual gearbox. Actually you have more control on these cars. Shifting manually means increased attention on operating the car instead of just focusing on driving the car which means controlling the dynamics of the car but i get the involvement part. You want to do more, you want to make sure that what the car does it`s from your own command. Maybe the world is slipping beneath us and subconsciously we crave more control. I`d be more concerned with the user data collection and privacy infringing that the modern cars are doing. It`s a far more important thing.

A Golf 7 will forever be better.
Yet dynamically, performance and looks wise the 8 is a step up.
The dash layout of my Mk 7.5 is a masterpiece of design.

In Australia we only get the MK8/8.5 fitted with the old EA888.3 engine from the mk7/7.5 yet we're paying inflated prices vs the rest of the world

I’ve a manual 7.5 gti. Great car, perfect amount of power for a daily drive. Can’t stand the looks and features of either the 8 or 8.5.
