Great comparison! Love your conversation style. In 2022; I still adore my D700. The rest of the stable includes: D7200, D600, D810.......and a Pentax k3. They all produce stellar images. I have found the D7200 with good glass can produce incredibly sharp images that rivals the D810. I use the D700 as an every day shooter swopping out to the D600 on occasion. Your test is so very correct, It is difficult to really see a marked difference in resolution.

I found the D700 images to LOOK best. As far as I can judge that in a full screen YT movie.
I have a D7100 which is always in 13 MP mode. I make enlargements upto 50 x 75 cm (20x30") without breaking a sweat. Megapixels don't count when you are above 12. The glass matters most for sharpness. The body for colour rendition.

Nothing can match the D700 colour tones/hue and its Legendary CFA.
With every jump in resolution, the colour filters are further weakened. After the D700, Nikon altered CFA filters in order to boost high ISO performance and fit a bigger number of mpx in the same size sensor. But this required making the filter less discriminating.
The colour discrimination of the specific CFA allows the separation as a unique shade of any single basic colour. Modern cameras lighter CFAs simply cluster similar shades of a single colour. The colours that are lost because of never being captured in the first place can never be recovered nor “cooked"
Week filters like the D850 one, have more overlap between the R, G, and B channels which allows more light through to the sensor. This helps support the greater pixel density of high-resolution sensors and their improved high-ISO performance but degrades the ability of these sensors to detect subtle tonal shifts.

I have a D700 and D600 in full-frame Nikon and have to say, in my opinion, the D700 gives the most 'Wow' pictures. I got rid of my crop Nikons in favor of the Olympus EM1 purely because of the small size and image stabilization. Great for street, macro, and wildlife. For everything else, I love the Nikons.

I tried the new/current denoising and upscaling AI in lightroom on an old D700 raw file. And within about 15 mins I had purchased used one from MPB.
I loved my d700, was probably my favourite camera of all time. I eventually upgraded it, and while noise and resolution improved, as did autofocus and live view, the "look" of the image on newer sensors never quite had the same punch. In editing if you tried to recreate the look it always came out looking too artificial. But now I have the magic again.

I think what it showed was that a 200 > 300mm on a full frame is likely to provide a better opportunity to frame an endearing composition than the wider view of the 105. At least, that is what suits my kind of more minimaIist photo visuals style. To me all the cropped pics made for a better photo composition and subject. I have D70, D300, D700 & D5300 and use mainly 20mm Nikkor AI, 200mm f2.8 Nikkor and tamron SP zooms 24-135mm f3.5-5.6 and the Adaptall 60-300mm f3.5-5.6. Also use Canon 5D mk2, Pentax K-m (sweet), Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mk3, E-20P & E-P3, Lumix G5, Fujifilm x-S1, Nikon FM, Nikon F90x, Nikon F65, Canon 300n & 300v & sureshot AF-7 & multi-tele, Pentax MZ-30, Olympus OM1, Minolta Dynax 5 & 505si & XG-1, Hasselblad 500c, Bronica ETRSi, Rolliecord Va, Widelux 150, Kodak model 118, Zorki-4, Oly u[mju:]-1 & -2, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-1700 & my various 5x4in cameras (if I could afford the film) 😢

Great video - right up to the theme... that we raised in one Russian photo forum - one guy upscaled studio photos in LR from D700 to 47 mpx fo D850 - and there was big difference... only the colours of D700 were... better!
I've been using D600, D750 then went to D300s, got D700 and had D800 and at the end of the day I still keep matching all those colours to the D700 output. For portraits and people photography to choose the right lens is more important. You have showed that you cant distinguish a camera looking ant the pictures. With a modern software you van even match a camera output. You can recover highlights and shadows with one=two clicks. Great video, great pictures and great examples!

Well, yeah of course MP matters. But to whom? General purpose photography like street, weddings etc can use any MPs but technical photography like I do of older buildings interiors and exteriors for presentation the largest amount of detail you can fit into an image is vital. The same as when I'm doing photogrammetry, more technical resolution matters a lot.

Even when I crashed one D800 the D850 was not realy on my mind, so I got another D800 - it is cheap and delivers for landscabephotos. I had a D500 for sportsphotos, but sold it after a year. It has great AF and speed, but I never used it for anything than a litle sports, less than 5000 click. Z6, never tried it, but perhaps in the future. Looking for a nice D700 right now and given that the human eye can't resolve much more than 240dpi, that 12Mp sensor will produce a clean A3 size image straight out of the camera. Add to the fact thats its also clean up to ISO6400, then its the bargain of the decade. Want to shoot sports, then the D500 is the right choice. Landscapes and portraits? It's a winner.

Nice video, but I'll be waiting for another one comparing the same shot for each of them side by side.
I'm a hobbyist, photographering my family, occasions, portraits and some landscape. I use Nikon D5300 with Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 (apsc coverage), Samyang 85mm F1.4 (full frame), and Nikon DX 18-140mm. Thinking of taking the huge step to Full Frame, I'm comparing D750 vs D600 vs D700. The latest is the cheapest, and also I found many pet attached to this old camera for its colors and low light performance which I care for so much.
Any suggestion will be great, for the body and suitable zoom lens.

I have the D700 and D4.. the problem I find with mirrorless is that there's a delay between the real world and the viewfinder because it's electronic. It's a fraction of a second. But the moment you see on the viewfinder is already passed in real live. I have had one. For example a jumping hors is in the air on the viewfinder but already landed in real live..And for sports quite annoying. Also for days behind the camera electronic viewfinder give fatigue for the eyes. So that's my experience....

A lot of you photos were shot at maximum shutter speed. Even stills where you could have gone down in iso to retain maximum dr och minimum noise. There's no need for 1/8000s iso 400 on a bright day shooting a non moving object. Lower iso to native, in your cameras base iso is 100, in some shots you were down on iso 64 with is electronically decreased. Good video, but try to keep more focus on the technical aspects since this is supposed to be a comparison between megapixels, and not noise and dr handling.

And I started with Nikons, used my dad's D70 and D90 way back in the day a couple times but wasnt interested. Then after dropping out of College my dad got the D7200 and he let me shoot some on it and I took interest so he gave me a cheap Kodak 1.3mp camera to use. Hated the camera and my cheap phone at the time had 16mp so I used it up untill I bough myself a Coolpix P610 in 2017. After that I fell in love with photography and bought the B700, P1000, then went mirrorless and bought my current camera I use in Spetember 2019 the Sony A7R III. I also own a Sony A6100 as a speare/wife's camera. My wife dabbles a little with photography and she started with my P610 then moved upto the B700 before getting the A6100 which she rarely uses now so this is why I use it as a spare.

Really odd! Due to the limited resolution of one's monitor even the blow up sections of each shot are unlikely to show any difference in resolution due to that of the sensors used. One also has to bear in mind that if shots are taken handheld much of the advantage of high resolution sensors will be lost due to camera shake even using VR and high speeds. Maybe also though the use of the full aperture of the lens may well give an advantage enabling higher shutter speeds and narrower depth of field it is likely that much of this will have to be offset by vignetting, lower contrast and lower resolution than the lens is able to give at say,f5.6. As to colour the D700 is famed for its rendering of colour but what you end up with depends very much on both any post processing and screen calibration. Sorry but apart from useful comments on handling the various combinations the exercise although well produced and entertaining was rather pointless.

There are most photos made with good and abundant natural light. Is it necessary to manipulate the D850 as if it were a Linhof? If so, I'll keep the freedom of 12 MPX sensors. I do agree that it would have been useful to add the photos in 5.6 where performance and image quality would be another and gather a little more evidence to come to some more grounded conclusion.

If you're going to compare 45mp to lesser megapixel cameras, try using a lens that's actually capable of resolving 45mp.
The 105mm 1.4 is barely sharper than the 85mm 1.4G, which can only resolve 24mp (at most).
    Redo your test with a 28mm 1.4E, 200mm F2, 300mm 2.8, or 400mm 2.8 (or Sigma 105mm 1.4) if you want real results, and not total BS.

    Hi Griniflix, some -negative- feedback on how I find your posted video;
--> in short; why do you post? Is it only clickbait? If only that was the goal, be clear about it, I now just feel like I learned nothing and I wasted my time.
After watching the video I clicked comments because I thought I might get some more in depth explanation, in stead I got a huge amount of irrelevant Amazon links; Zeiss, Gopro,...
WHY? To make us use the links and you get some $ %?
"...DOES IT MATTER..." in the title, kind of implies you give viewers an answer of your opinion.
If you want US, the viewers to be able to form an opinion about what and how you posted; you chose the wrong format and the wrong way to do that. In a video at LEAST, I would like to see pictures taken on the same location and on screen side by side, with your comments. I'm not alone in this, another replied the same.
If you're just describing the way each handle, I didn't find any info that is not obvious by looking a few seconds at the specs.
Great for you that you own all these camera's and lenses but it does not make for a good video content just because of that.
To me the video is like a long drawn out question to what WE viewers think about it. Again; if only that was the goal, be clear about it, I now just feel like I learned nothing and I wasted my time.
I viewed some other tempting titles from other video's of you, they are all the same to me; disappointing.
PS I also have a lot of gear from a FM2 to a D6 and travelled 3 years across Australia alone with my 3 dromedaries , travelled overland to Tibet and Mongolia, crossed Africa; 35.000km on a XT500 and then some, but don't claim to be able to make a good UA-cam video.

My biggest challenge with the XT was kick starting it, the kick back was leg shattering if you didn't perfect the start process. Tibet, Mongolia and more of Africa are still on my to do ride list. Have fun. Thanks for watching.

Peter- I can away from the video believing, as I already did, image quality is the same, regardless of how many pixels are involved. The native resolution only affects print size.

It is just one year since I started shooting. But almost everybody praise D700. Is it worth buying a D700 in 2023? And higher resolutions from D8xx attracts me. But in this case, have to upgrade my PC parts. I don't think I am fully using my D750 now. So it seems I don't need more cameras. Nevertheless, every morning I search the trade site.
