This book has a deep dive into Leonard Leo’s Opus Dei takeover of Washington, DC. I grew up in a traditional Protestant religion which identified the Catholic religion/the pope as the anti Christ and viewed its teachings antithetical . I have seen the gradual and effective transformation and obfuscation of the traditional Protestant message into this new Christian Nationalist Evangelical. I rejected my religious upbringing a long time ago and I’m horrified, petrified by what I have seen happen to members of my family with this new fevered religious uprising.

I believe you Frank: it comports perfectly with the patterns I have witnessed in my own experience. I am one of those Catholics on the other end of the spectrum and I fear that despite the Pope's more "liberal" attitudes toward our political situation, he is of an age that limits his ability to warn the Catholic world with the kind of urgency that is needed. Movies have the ability to speak to minds and hearts sometimes allowing another perspective to gain consideration. There are movies that present characters that embrace Opus Dei ritual and attitudes. Some of those beliefs are terrifying for their holders and for individual who interact with them.

This is really creeping me out. I’m old enough that I remember when JFK was running for President (yes, I’m that old!) and I think that was really where I first got some political concepts, even as an adolescent (I think I was about 10 or 11). First, I remember women talking to each other and saying, “ooh, he’s so cute….I’m voting for him!” Even as a kid, I thought, OMG, how stupid! (because I didn’t know the term “shallow” for thought processes yet). He’s running for President, not to be your boyfriend! How can that even matter? I wouldn’t care if he looked like the Hunchback of Notre Dame (I didn’t know the name Quasimodo yet, either), if he has the intelligence and qualifications to run the country. But the other thing I remember so well was the national conversation about him being Catholic, as he was the first Catholic the U.S. ever elected president, when people were asking, “Is he going to take orders from the Pope?” And, “Is he going to ask the Pope for advice in how to run the country?” I thought that was pretty ridiculous, too, and yet, look at what’s going on today. This is really scary to me. If this keeps up, we’ll have our own Inquisition (and if they check my past media history, I’ll be one of the ones they put on the rack! (Yes, I know, that’s a bit of an exaggeration [maybe], but I’m sure whatever method they use to “cleanse” the nation, I’ll be getting it, but I know I’m not even close to being alone). And, of course, someday, some president will be asking “who will relieve me of this pesky ‘cardinal’”. (I know those aren’t the exact words that were used, but you get my point, I’m sure). We’re getting even deeper into Handmaid’s Tale territory here, as well as George Orwell’s 1984.

However, you grew up in an environment where Opus Dei was a known entity, so I'm not questioning your experience...and I trust you more than Wikipedia. I too checked out Wikipedia and in particular read over the subsection on its controversial nature. I noted numerous references that matched Frank's narratives. Also I noted the section which discussed refutations. So their reputation seems a bit mixed. But a clear problem is created for any organization that has severe secrecy as a core group practice. It automatically raises suspicions. And it seemed to me that a practice of allowing for a lot of local autonomy in its organizational structure can suffer from some offsetting and problematic behavior from badly lead authority figures. This is especially true in a group that appears to slavishly adhere to authoritarian governance. And its adherence to ultra conservative interpretations of catholic teachings/practices are going to be unfavorable to women equality issues, gays right protections, anything related to birth control and personal body autonomy, etc. So I for one would not want to have such a philosophy dictating my life or American culture in general. It all just appears too aggressive and repressive. Creeping (and creepy!) Fascism.

All the judges that overturned Roe were good Catholics following their church's teaching under threat of excommunication. And of course Gorsuch is a Catholic and not a Protestant. If he had stayed a Catholic, his wife could not have participated with him at Mass anyway as the Anglicans are not in communion with the Roman Church. So why not? Excellent video. I suggest you get the new book “Opus” by Gareth Gore. I follow Leonard Leo and his merry band of Supremes more closely than most. This book has a deep dive into Leonard Leo’s Opus Dei takeover of Washington, DC. All the cool kid DC reporters, the legal pundits, the Sunday morning talking heads havent a clue about how DC runs if they don’t understand the extremist faith that motivates and inspires these Opus Dei Holy Warriors.

The WHOLE reason I left the Republican Party a number of years ago was because the separation of church and state was breaking down. With a libertarian upbringing, and as a Christian, I did not want government telling anyone how to worship. Even -- or especially if -- I agreed with some their religious principles. Man telling fellow humans what to do as if they were God. No thanks. Playing God is not for me.

I grew up in a traditional Protestant religion which identified the Catholic religion/the pope as the anti Christ and viewed its teachings antithetical . I have seen the gradual and effective transformation and obfuscation of the traditional Protestant message into this new Christian Nationalist Evangelical. I rejected my religious upbringing a long time ago and I’m horrified, petrified by what I have seen happen to members of my family with this new fevered religious uprising.

I was a Roman Catholic theologian. After Trump 2016 victory made possible only by Christians I walked away so now am a FORMER RC theologian. Frank it’s so important that folks in your sphere of Christianity know about Opus Dei and this extreme but hugely powerful network of people and groups and their distortion of the Beauty of Christ that once radiated from the Catholic tradition but now has been weaponized to the max. @@toritori5835 One was The da Vinci Code, which had a scene with a priest involved in Opus Dei flagellating himself (whipping himself with leather straps, which, if I remember correctly, had little metal shards at the tips that drew blood, lots of blood) for penance. That’s the only one I remember.

This is really creeping me out. I’m old enough that I remember when JFK was running for President (yes, I’m that old!) and I think that was really where I first got some political concepts, even as an adolescent (I think I was about 10 or 11). First, I remember women talking to each other and saying, “ooh, he’s so cute….I’m voting for him!” Even as a kid, I thought, OMG, how stupid! (because I didn’t know the term “shallow” for thought processes yet). He’s running for President, not to be your boyfriend! How can that even matter? I wouldn’t care if he looked like the Hunchback of Notre Dame (I didn’t know the name Quasimodo yet, either), if he has the intelligence and qualifications to run the country. But the other thing I remember so well was the national conversation about him being Catholic, as he was the first Catholic the U.S. ever elected president, when people were asking, “Is he going to take orders from the Pope?” And, “Is he going to ask the Pope for advice in how to run the country?” I thought that was pretty ridiculous, too, and yet, look at what’s going on today. This is really scary to me. If this keeps up, we’ll have our own Inquisition (and if they check my past media history, I’ll be one of the ones they put on the rack! (Yes, I know, that’s a bit of an exaggeration [maybe], but I’m sure whatever method they use to “cleanse” the nation, I’ll be getting it, but I know I’m not even close to being alone). And, of course, someday, some president will be asking “who will relieve me of this pesky ‘cardinal’”. (I know those aren’t the exact words that were used, but you get my point, I’m sure). We’re getting even deeper into Handmaid’s Tale territory here, as well as George Orwell’s 1984.

I looked up Opus Dei on Wikipedia, and the article debunked a lot of what you claimed. However, you grew up in an environment where Opus Dei was a known entity, so I'm not questioning your experience...and I trust you more than Wikipedia. I'm questioning the accuracy of the Wikipedia article. Maybe they're describing the 'outer layer' of Opus Dei instead of its evil core.
Dig deeper. These guys are very good at hiding their membership and their agenda. For example, read about the Catholic information Center.
By "debunked" do you mean the article didn't outright co-sign every point made by FS? Because everything FS has said about Opus Dei - regarding both the movement's history and its (allowed) aims - is factually correct.
I too checked out Wikipedia and in particular read over the subsection on its controversial nature. I noted numerous references that matched Frank's narratives. Also I noted the section which discussed refutations. So their reputation seems a bit mixed. But a clear problem is created for any organization that has severe secrecy as a core group practice. It automatically raises suspicions. And it seemed to me that a practice of allowing for a lot of local autonomy in its organizational structure can suffer from some offsetting and problematic behavior from badly lead authority figures. This is especially true in a group that appears to slavishly adhere to authoritarian governance. And its adherence to ultra conservative interpretations of catholic teachings/practices are going to be unfavorable to women equality issues, gays right protections, anything related to birth control and personal body autonomy, etc. So I for one would not want to have such a philosophy dictating my life or American culture in general. It all just appears too aggressive and repressive. Creeping (and creepy!) Fascism.

Do you think that there's an integrally Italo-Centric, Euro-Centric aspect to Catholicism? I know that seems to be an obvious question from a certain point of view, but I've always taken for granted that they really are trying to be universalist. But the more I look at it, at its icons and at its hierarchy, and then look at its growing base of reactionary, right wing, white supremacist, followers online, the less it seems to be a coincidence that these two go together easily.

And of course Gorsuch is a Catholic and not a Protestant. He was born a Catholic, raised and educated a Catholic, practiced as a Catholic until he fell in love with an English girl, and is now an Anglican because his wife was. If he had stayed a Catholic, his wife could not have participated with him at Mass anyway as the Anglicans are not in communion with the Roman Church. So why not?
Also, to be precise, Anglican/Episcopal churches are not actually even Protestant. They do not descend from Luther's Reformation. They are the offspring of King Henry VIII's coup against the Pope! And their fundamental theology, especially in its higher form, is essentially identical to Roman Catholicism.

Christian extremism in Opus Dei or Evangelical Christianity is often appealing to the overtly pious, which does not necessarily coincide with Christianity in spirit or action.
