    Great info, Ed! That same principle is true for aquariums too. People don't understand that the beneficial bacteria needed to break down the nitrites and ammonia lives primarily in the filter media and when they throw the media away because it's "dirty", they're actually causing the aquarium to go through the nitrogen cycle again until the bb colony grows back large enough to keep the water from getting toxic. The only difference is, ponds are big enough that you can keep the water because there are enough plants growing in and around it that they're able to knock the nitrates down to a reasonable level. In an aquarium however, varying degrees of water changes are necessary every week to accomplish that same affect.

    Excellent Explanation Ed, thank you. I'm certainly on the right track for my ponds.
    As we are in Autumn, going into Winter, I've been cleaning out dropped leaves. Should I leave the Leaves?

    • @edbeaulieu5916
      @edbeaulieu5916 5 років тому +1

      Kim from New Zealand Remove the bulk of them, some leaves will not hurt anything and in fact are beneficial because it will provide food and cover for benthic organisms.
      But too many leaves in a small pond can cause a Dissolved oxygen drop and/or increase tannic acids in the pond.
      Do you get extended periods of ice cover there???

    • @kimfromnewzealand8768
      @kimfromnewzealand8768 5 років тому +1

      @@edbeaulieu5916 No ice ever where I am. In fact our Summer and Autumn have been very hot, with an overdue Winter. I'm slowing feeding down, but it doesn't get cold enough to stop completely. It was 17 degrees Celsius at 0530. Crazy high temps for this time of year. Ponds don't get too many leaves and are over filtered :-)

I need my pond re-done/renovated and have always been hesitant to go the Aquascape way because I worry about all the animals (frogs, insects, snails) that overwinter and think a spring clean will kill all these critters. Really good stuff! Nature really is the greatest teacher of systems. I'm curious though...how could the filtration system be more passive? The idea of a person having to hose down the filters every season and reseed the pond with exogenous probiotics feels counter to biomimicry.

    Ed, could you share some of your knowledge on how to settle plants in the gravel of an ecosystem pond? Do I leave the soil the roots are sitting in when delivered or do I free the roots from any soil at all and put them "naked" into the gravel? Do I use substrate?
    Do I have to plant them differently in the pond vs. the wetland filter?
    There's a lot of information on many areas around a pond, but I couldn't find anything about the planting yet.

    In point of fact, the ecosystem is everything but the fish --- the fish provide the food for all the bacteria, plants, and algae. I like thinking that I'm a bacteria farmer, and the fish are the food providers. 😄

    That's not what biomimicry means. That's not what eutrophication means. It's not a closed ecosystem. Algae aren't "living plants". He gets an *F* for poor familiarity of the big words (and small) he tries to use.

    • @edbeaulieu5916
      @edbeaulieu5916 5 років тому +1

      Ignes Andros Please elaborate.....
      We’re not mimicking natural processes?
      The eutrophication process is the buildup of nutrients and sediments that when left unchecked will change the water temperature, total suspended solids will increase, dissolved oxygen will become lower due to a higher BOD.
      You are correct in saying it’s not a 100% closed system because it’s outdoors so we get outside inputs....

    • @templebrown7179
      @templebrown7179 5 років тому

      @@edbeaulieu5916 It's modelled on natural processes, sure, but that's not biomimicry. Biomimicry refers specifically to modelling your design based on a biological process or biological formation.
      You described eutrophication, in the video, as the build-up of nutrients over time, faster than they can be broken down. That's nutrient build-up which is tangential to eutrophication. While this can cause eutrophication, this specific process itself is not technically eutrophication. What's more, there's no point in him describing it (inaccurately) as eutrophication since he failed to expand on why it's unwanted or bad, namely surface algae and subsequent anoxic conditions and fish die-off.
      It's not remotely a closed system. It could not function as a closed system.
      Your explanation of eutrophication in your reply is also incorrect. Sediments are a separate, though aggravating, factor from eutrophication. Also, oxygen becomes lower not just from higher biological oxygen demand, but also due to decreased free oxygen production by subsurface algae and plants and, to a lesser extent, due to increased surface tension (due to algal esters and lipids) diminishing natural gas exchange at the water / gas interface.
      Algae ≠ plants
