I have the exact same Engine given it a full service carb kit new plugs new oil new coils points and condensors new impellor runs great liked your video.
Hey Buddy. thanks a bunch for an awesome video. I have an almost exact motor, and your video gave me currage to do the carb service myself. I have everything mounted back in place, except from the "choke linkage" part. i'd love to se some closeups of it, from other angels or maybe i can send you a quick vid of my motor/choke linkage unit. if you have the time of course :D NICE vids, love fishing - cheers from a new subscriber from Denmark, Pete
hey thanks a lot man i really appreciate it! if you email buschfishin@gmail.com i can send you a video of how to put it together and you can send me your video!
no problem! when you adjust the fuel air mixture screw make sure that you start at 1.5 turns out, not 2.5 like i said in the video! should fix that problem, good luck!
yes, 1.5 turns out after turning it in until it’s lightly seated just to where you feel it stop so you don’t mess up the tip of the needle, that’s just a starting point. from there you turn it either 1/4 turn out (leaner) or 1/4 in (richer) until you get it to have a nice idle. if you can’t seem to get it to idle down or run “richer” the issue is either lack of fuel from fuel pump, dirty carb, or there is a vacuum leak somewhere causing it to suck excess air and making it run lean no matter how you change the fuel air mixture
As hot as the lower unit was, I would definitely replace the impeller. Nice video, I have two 25hp Johnsons that I've set and cleaned points, cleaned the carbs and resealed and rebuilt the gear housing and lower units.
That thing needs to be deeper in a barrel, the main water intake is directly behind the prop, and there’s some smaller inlets higher up on the case. But it should be twice as deep as you got it there. The water comes out forcefully from the inverted hole in the notch where the lower unit get narrower. The water intake is the little tube-looking projecting right behind the prop, with some smaller screens higher up on the case.
I have a Johnson 18 horse. I can’t seem to get it to hit max mph. I have changed spark plugs, ran sea foam through it. The only time I noticed it hit 17 mph is when I was running out of gas. Other than that, top speed of 7mph. I checked the carb and it is clean. I’m at a loss.
i actually just had a similar problem with my 20hp, i would say the first thing you should do is run the motor and on that fuel air mixture screw (if you have one like mine) turn it counter clockwise in increments of 1/8 turns making it more lean and see if that’ll do it since it ran better when it was running out of gas. if that doesn’t do it, it could be that your high speed butterfly isn’t opening all the way when you go full throttle, to check that just go full throttle and look at that butterfly and see if it’s perfectly horizontal. if that’s the case the adjustment is easy but i would start with the fuel air mixture screw. let me know what happens!
Hey, I know it's a year later but I have been having the same issue as you with my outboard and I'm about to give his response a shot. Just curious if it worked for you to gain your speed back?
When you ran the motor in the barrel, you said that the water pump was working. How were you able to tell this? I have a 1978 25HP, and I can't find a place where the water is exiting the motor.
if your motor doesn’t have the “tell tale” hose from the bottom of the powerhead it’s just like mine where the water comes out of the exhaust hole on the back of the leg, about 1ft up above the prop straight out the back. run it with the intake completely underwater and within a minute or two you should have a spray coming out with the exhaust, if you do not after that long let it go a little more but more likely than not either the water pump isn’t pumping or you have something along the way blocking the water from coming out.. could be the thermostat failing
hi, i have the same motor. cant figure out where water comes out. its pumps water out of the exhaust, but think there should be a little water coming out of a holw? like every other outboard?
the two holes on the back where the exhaust is is the only place up top where water comes out, these motors don’t have the tell-tale out of the lower cowling like you see on most motors, usually after about a minute of running you’ll see a little bit of water come out the exhaust holes and when running on the lake at higher rpms you’ll get more flow. but as long as there is some water coming out of the exhaust at idle after about a minute everything is working properly.
this is a 1970 but the motors should be pretty much identical, pour some atf down the spark plug holes with the motor tilted up for a day or two and try to spin it with a breaker bar on the flywheel nut.. (clockwise) and see if that free’s it up! don’t force it either that can get you in some more trouble
there’s two wires going into it, one comes from the blue coils next to the spark plugs in the back and the others go under the fly wheel. there’s a total of 4 wires going into the two terminals

Thanks mate,Ive just bought the very same engine and having the very same idle problems.Ill see what i can do.Thanks again.

Is that 1.5 turns out after you thread it all the way in? Having the same problem with similar motor

Do you know what seal kit you got. I’m looking for one
No problem, i go thru (boats.net) for all my outboard parts. You can find the year, serial number for your specific outboard.
On boats.net it will show a detailed diagram of the entire outboard. And you can pick and choose which seal, or part you need.

1.5 turns out for the air mixture screw, then start and adjust
did i say 2.5 in the video? i knew i should’ve changed that, thank you!

On the 20 hp Johnson how does the kill switch come out
how does it come out of the cowling or how does it ground out ignition?
i have that same engine but locked up 1965 right?

@@buschfishin thanks for info.
What year is that motor
i believe 73’ is the year
Were is the kill wire hooked to on the motor
there’s two wires going into it, one comes from the blue coils next to the spark plugs in the back and the others go under the fly wheel. there’s a total of 4 wires going into the two terminals
You need a bigger pail . Water has to be over the top of water pump. You probably cooked the impeller already
yes i didn’t realize the water pickup was above the cavitation plate
Which year model?
1972 or 1975 i believe
Great videos I don’t know if you remember but I’m from the boat launch me and my fried both have channels his is striking tv
Definitely need a deeper bucket. Don't run your motor hot if you're not seeing the water peeing out.
