Honolulu CHEAP EATS Pt. 2 || Eat like a Local! [Honolulu, Hawaii]
Guys I love your content! So happy I found your channel. I was curious to see which okazuya was still open. Thank you for doing this one.
Aloha Satoshi and Shinichi🤙🏼 We are so honored that you enjoy our content! You both are a really big inspiration to us and truth be told, we have been watching you guys for YEARS! We always enjoy your food tours of different cities (they definitely helped us plan many trips!), your food recipe videos, and the videos that include Shinichi's Mom and Sister! Mahalo for checking us out and watching us! Aloha!
@@AmandaFelixEats That makes us happy. Continue what you do. We look forward to seeing more from you guys.
Aloha Amanda & Felix. I am Robert, from Hawaii. My girl is Susan. We live on the ninth island (Las Vegas). We enjoy you show very much. I have been away from Hawaii for over 20 years and we just started going back on vacations. Susan came up with a few very good ideas. One suggestion was to tell people the location of the place you are eating at in proximity to where it is to Waikiki because that is where most tourist will be staying. I also think you should be a little more consistent in sharing price of the cheap eats. Anyway, keep up the good work.
Aloha
Robert & Susan
Definitely agree, I would really like to know how close it is to where I'll b staying, and how much it is
I should probably tell you guys: I’m over here with a pen and paper taking notes. We do visit Oahu about several times per year, but don’t know about the local places to eat. So thank you so much for all your insights. I love both of your personalities and you two are perfect together!
Supporting local places is good! That’s how we can help them survive!
Fukuya is my favorite okazuya and I remember getting food from there with my family since I was a kid. You guys picked a lot of the things I like, but I don't know where you got your information because some of things you said were inaccurate. "Okazu" means the Japanese food items that accompany rice like in bentō, which is what the plantation workers took to the fields from home. They did not buy it from a store. Later those dishes were sold in "town" and so "okazuya" shops sold okazu and rice in musubi or sushi (inari or maki). Although okazuya today may have added dishes like poke or chow fun, it is still really a place to get Japanese food for lunch. That's why most things are sold out by 2 p.m. The dishes are mostly from the western side of Japan like Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, or Fukuoka because thatʻs where the Japanese plantation workers like my grandparents were from. Nishime is definitely a traditional Japanese dish, but it may not be called that in the eastern Tokyo area. I know "hekka" isn't Standard Japanese. I lived in Tokyo for five years, and people would sometimes laugh at Japanese words I used because they are the Hiroshima dialect, which is common among Hawaiʻiʻs Japanese immigrants. People I know from Hiroshima understand exactly what I'm talking about.
Felix may not be interested in the history lesson, but if you want to describe and explain the food and kind of local eatery you are at to people outside of Hawaiʻi, or even for locals who may not know, itʻs a good idea to do your research and get your facts clearly stated before you record. An interesting book on the history of food in Hawai'i is Arnold Hiura's "Kaukau: Cuisine and Culture in the Hawaiian Islands." bookshawaii.net/products/kau-kau
In general, Amanda does a good job trying to explain what the food is and give some background for non-local people, and her pronunciation of Japanese words is usually quite good -- except this time, you both use the typical American pronunciation of "okazuya" with the stress on the next-to-last syllable. In Japanese it's not "okaZUya" -- Just say "okazu" and add "ya." (I wonder how Felix's Vietnamese pronunciation is? THAT'S a hard language for English -speakers! )
Really love your videos, guys! They are so helpful and informative and make me so nostalgic for the food in Hawaii. I miss Oahu so much. Can't wait to go back!
I love your channel. I have watched all your videos. I grew up in Tokyo and my only ohana is on Kauai (30 years), and I am finally moving from mainland closer to ohana but to Oahu cuz i got a job (am an RN for military, civilian). Please make videos about local stuff, compare areas of Oahu, towns. Culture. Also, reviewing all the best poke places. I only know Kauai so being on Oahu will be so foreign to me.
Thank you for watching🥰 I'm sure you'll get accustomed to Oahu quickly! All of our videos are based on Oahu so you can see Oahu before you come here! 😉
@@AmandaFelixEats oh yes u have watched them all! Keep them coming! Love both of yall!
I literally enjoyed every bite of every item that you and Felix ate in cheap eats 1 and 2. Mahalo for your most excellent show. 🤙❤
I love you guys!! You enjoy food like I do. I am so Thankful to find your channel. I plan to visit all these local spots in June..
Awesome! Thank you for watching🤙🏼! Hope you can enjoy when you visit in June!
I'm going at the end of May!:)
@@lissifajen185 Awesome! Hope you enjoy the food and your stay!
I really like how both of you contribute your knowledge of the foods you are eating. I can't wait to go back to Oahu and visit some of the places you showcase.
YES! I so enjoy learning about the culture and history of Hawaii and no better way to learn about that than through food!! I am half Hawaiian/Latina but have never been, so I enjoy anything I can learn about the islands 🧡🌿
Thank you for watching❤️ We're glad you're enjoying learning about Hawaii's history and food culture! You definitely should visit one day!
I remembered walking to Kamehameha Bakery, located at North School Street, before relocating to Dillingham Boulevard. Chocolate donuts and Malasada were my favorite.
Awe so happy to see locals reviewing and posting about food here. Definitely going to try this place
Thank you for watching🥰 Hope you like it!
Love Okazuya foods! I want to try Fukuyama for sure! I’m 4th generation Japanese & I know how to make mostly all of those dishes at home. It was handed down from my mom, who taught me to make traditional food! I missed home so much! I miss the Food a! 🤙🏽🌺💜
Yes! Definitely a must try if you like Okazuya❤️ Thanks for watching!
I’m glad I found your channel. It is so good to hear folks talk about their culture and their family’s history. We grew up in mainland America, but my parents continued cooking our traditional foods at home. After I got married and began to travel, I learned to eat (and enjoy) other cultures’ food. I am looking forward to visiting the local spots you’ve featured in your videos soon. Thank you for an awesome video.
My husband and I will be there in 2 weeks. Excited to try these foods! Thanks for your video
Thank you for watching🥰 Hope you enjoy while you're here!
So glad to see locals doing local food and local spots!!! Keep up the good work!
Makes me want to fly home immediately and eat all the things I grew up eating!!!!! You guys know all the Hot local spots!!!!
Yes, it used to be more purple. I like the cinnamon raisin roll, banana bread and bread pudding. I used to like the haupia malasada-donut but don't know if it's still the same. I haven't seen it recently, but there used to be a flat log pastry stuffed with a brownish filling that was delicious.
I haven’t tried an okazuya, but I love kimpira gobo and I grew up with nishime/oden… I miss Hawaii and love watching your channel.
Aloha Amanda & Felix!!! Another amazing food video that made my mouthwatering opu hungry lol!!! I shouldn't be watching this video at 11 pm at night especially when their is no local food places I can go too in WA. Mahalo and stay safe
Thank you for watching! Sorry for making you so hungry😆
Loved the history, especially about generations of Asians in Hawaii.
I have never stopped into a bakery in Hawaii and tried those great looking pastries, nummmmyyyy🌟🍩❤. They all look so good, wish I were hanging out with you guys going on a "cheap eats" adventure, would be a lot of fun☺Aloha
You both are so cute. I like that you just talk story kine and local! Expand the horizons of the malahini and eat!😆
You are too kind! Thank you for watching and supporting us🥰
Yummy...4th video I can't wait to go back to Honolulu - u 2 so cute!
Love to watch your videos on local cheap eats. Thanks.
the food looks great. I enjoy learning about the culture of the people wherever I travel to and Hawaii definitely has so many different cultures to learn about (and experience with the food). thank you again for your vlogs.
So true! We love sharing our culture with the world❤️ Thanks for watching!
Just found your channel. All I gotta say is it makes me hungry. I miss local food and especially okazuya.
Awesome! Thank you for watching and welcome to our Foodie Ohana🤙🏼
I love okazuya!!! I grew up 3 houses away from Gulick Deli and I always had the best field trip lunches.
Okay you guys, I’m drooling like crazy. I’ve lived in South Carolina for the past 32 years. Needless to say, there’s NOTHING like Hawaii food here. I’m looking forward to my trip back home in the fall. First place to visit and eat will be Gulick Ave delicatessen...my fave. Thanks for sharing all the other well known okazuyas. I’m planning to eat my way across Oahu this November. 😊😋 Lucky you live Hawaii!
Hi! I'm Japanese living in states and really enjoying your contents.
Love affordable eats and sweets.
In my hometown we call "nishime" for "nimono" too.
so NISHIME exist!
Hoping to check out your contents more, since we are going to go to Hawaii in August.
Can't wait.
Thanks guys.
Mahalo for supporting Sami! 🤙
The food looks amazing. Thank you for show the local eats. We are coming over from California in April and these kind of establishments are exactly what we are looking to try. You guys are great keep up the great videos and your channel will be huge in no time!!!
Thank you for watching and the kind words🥰 We love showing the world Hawaii's different food and culture!
Love your content and these videos are so addicting. Just one suggestion, it would be help to see the location of the place you visit listed during the video(added by chapters for example) or listed in the description section. Can’t wait to see more! We’re literally knocking out all the places you both listed 😍
I love okazuya, I remember always stopping by Fukuya on the day of field trips, it was my go to for field trip lunch.
I made it to that bakery!!! I was smuggling apple fritters and pineapple upside-down squares. They DA TRUTH! Those ladies are hilarious. They love to talk and flirt. 😂🤣
Gotta love a good bakery with character 😅
Learned about you guys from photo Luke. You guys make me wanna go there soon. I will definitely try these places. Aloha!
Awesome! Thank you for watching🥰!
Definitely like these Okazuya videos, more please!
I love your content especially when seasoned with some history. Only problem is your shows always make me soooooo hungry. (LOL)
Doing great job, guys. Keep it going. I enjoy your channel a lot!

Loved the lil history lessons and your descriptions of the food are making me so hungry 🤤 So glad I found your channel; I've lived in Hawaii my whole life and haven't heard of a ton of the restaurants in your vids, can't wait to try them out!!!
Awesome! Thank you for watching! Welcome to our foodie ohana🥳
Late to the party, but yes it is interesting to learn about the/your local history. Food looks fantastic!!
We're coming there in April. I want to try these locations. Always appreciate a fresh perspective. Culture differences are great to experience.
Mahalo for watching and supporting! 🤙
“Of course we had to get dessert.” 💗 ur style
Ahhh. I love Fukuya! You got the most local food places out there! Btw hi Amanda and Felix! Much love, Tabby :)
Hi Tabby! Yes👍🏼 Fukuya is the best!
I remember as a little boy, my Uncle bringing us malasadas early in the morning in Aiea.
(The best years of my life were in Hawaii). 😩😩😩
Just discovered your channel and enjoy your content. We frequent Sugoi and have never ventured into Kamehameha Bakery. Will certainly check them out when we visit Waikiki in a few weeks.
Please mention price please. Very important to your Subs to make informed decisions.
Keep up the great content! 🤙🏽
Have lived near both of these establishments💖great choices 😋
So awesome, I just had dinner, now after watching you guyz I've got the munchies!.....Geeeezzz!
I'll be down there next week. Hey you need to take us there!!! You guys are hilarious!!! 🤙🏽🤙🏽🔥
Mahalo nui loa e Amanda and Felix! My 'ohana, originally from Japan, is also 5 generations in Hawai'i/mainland. Unfortunately because of historic anti-Asian sentiment (with an uptick during the pandemic - Atlanta shootings just 1 example), the Japanese/American incarceration during WWII and wanting to "get along to get ahead," a lot of culture has been lost. Mahalo for pointing out the historic nature of okazuyas - time capsule of what people were eating late 1800's, early 1900's. Enjoying your videos and taking notes for a future trip home when I look forward to visiting all these ono local eating places.
Thank you for the detailed explanation here in the comments section! My mom would always tell me the stories my Grandma would tell her about that time period... 😰We're just so lucky to live in Hawaii where the asian population is a majority and not a minority🥰
Man you missing the Inari sushi when I go their i order 6 of them awesome video I love sekiya okazuya by kaimuki high
Ohhh Man I'm going to go nuts tomorrow morning gotta get me a dozen of them taro Malasada's
Thanks for watching🤙🏼 No one can say no to malasada!🤤
The danish was a ringer slipped in from Old Vienna pastry bistro just to see what you would say. Actually Austria and Denmark are a long way away from each other. Their pastries are however similar dough.
Very interesting, we would love to visit Europe one day!
I'm getting married in a few months and my fiance's last name is Worwood, it's so close to ur name😂! We are also going to Oahu for our honeymoon:)
So interesting. My mom is from Japan and I grew up in Seattle so I never got the multi-generational Asian experience growing up. I can't even imagine what it is like having 5 generations of my family from Japan in the U.S. But since moving to Hawaii a while back I've learned a lot more about the Asian American experience on the islands, which is way different than what its like in the mainland. Thanks for sharing! Felix, what's your background?
We're glad to hear that moving to Hawaii has helped you learn more about Asian American experience in Hawaii, it's very different from the mainland right?
We're talking about background/ethnicity in our upcoming Q&A, stay tuned🤙🏼
Great show! The Best, I like your choices and style. I live in Minnesota, so I miss all of the foods. What are your ethnic backgrounds?
Hi Mark! Thank you for watching🥰 for our 1,000 Sub video we'll be doing a Q&A so we'll answer your question in that video!
I love it when you go to local eats when I'm over there I would much rather go to the local places than I would the well-known ones so keep it up that bakery I think I'm going to have to stay away from it or I'll gain 300 lb
Thank you for watching!🥰
My favorite malasada is haupia and the plain one taste good dunked in coffee to me local food has great flavor and texture made with love mahalo plenty
That sounds ono🤤 Never dipped a malasada in coffee but sounds delicious! Mahalo for watching🤙🏼
@@AmandaFelixEats the plain one no filling its like a regular glazed donut.
@@albertpilimai8178 We've tried all kinds of malasadas just never tried dipping it in coffee😆
Introducing the Mala-glaz-ah-sada. Only in the Hawaiian Isles do you find Portuguese/ American doughnuts. Truly a "hidden gem"! Brought to you by the ancient whalers who dipped their dough in hot whale oil.
Yes! Truly a hidden gem that is very unique to Hawaii🌺
U guys don’t go to the regular spot that everybody else does🤙🏽😎🌺
THANK👏🏻YOU👏🏻! We really want to do places that aren't wide spread! I think you're the only one to comment on that so far, we really appreciate that you noticed🤙🏼
Love your video! Quick question: where is the best place to get corn beef hash in Oahu?
Thank you for watching🥰 There are so many places with corn beef hash, we don't really have a "best place" but definitely check out Liliha Bakery (Diner side) or Zippys! 😆
I'm down for the local fun facts! Nice content
Mahalo for watching🤙🏼
Awesome!! Everything look ono. You guys gotta go Iges, if you haven't yet.
Thank you for watching🥰 We definitely have Ige's on our list!!
Thanks for the interesting video! The food looks amazing!
Thanks for watching🤙🏼
I loved going to okazuyas, as a kid growing up in the Punchbowl, Nuuanu, and Pauoa area. Mmmahalo!
Glad I found u. Just need to go back to Hawaii
You guys make me miss Hawaii soooo bad. I used to go Kam bakery for the butter rolls, 2 doz. For sure. You guys keep sharing the 808 love. Aloha from Kansas
Thank you for watching🤙🏼 Glad you enjoyed!
U guys ever did a video on Young’s Fish Market?!? I absolutely love their Lai Lai!! All their other Hawaiian grinds are ono as well!!!🤗🌺🙏💖
Hey Amanda & Felix, just watched your Cheap Eats #2 and I really enjoy watching you enjoying eating your foods...Just a note, you can't exactly say that Fukuya's is cheap eats, quite the opposite to say the least, but the food is good 😋
Love the cheap eats videos. Could you please include prices 😘🙏
Yes..the poi glazed malasada normally does have a much more purple color on the inside.
Am a new subscriber to your channel and enjoy your videos..thank you! both!
Right?! Still was ono though! Thank you for watching and supporting🤙🏼 Welcome to our foodie ohana!
After watching this video last night I headed straight to Masa and Joyce Okazuya in Kaneohe today for lunch ( and dinner ). I haven't been there in a while. My only problem is that I always end up with too much food ( it all looks soo good ) and like a $ 30.00 bill ....
We run into the same problem with over ordering when everything looks so good! Foodie life haha! Mahalo for watching and supporting! 🤙
Two of my faves go to Fukuya’s all the time. Nori chicken is bomb especially when hot! See ya guys!
Heck yes! I wanna eat good food locals would crave!
Yummy yummy food Amanda and Felix
Amanda is right the Kam Bakery poi malasada's are usually more purple inside.
Sh*t, you two are making me homesick! 😩😩😩
Does McDonalds still have the best fruit punch on the island?
It’s funny, telling all of my friends here on the east coast that McDonalds sells rice & Portuguese sausage for breakfast! 🍚 🍳
Thank you so much for your videos! It is so helpful!
Yum I love local foods and my husband loves poke. He grew up in Kaliki KPT lol😅. I love malasadas!
Thanks for the video. Love from Seattle WA
Thank you for watching🤙🏼
I have watched every video to date. Just going back to thumb it up!
Mahalo for watching and supporting! 🤙
Fukuya is not cheap eats, those dishes add up very quick but they are good. Love your videos.
Thank you for watching🤙🏼
Awesome one guys! 😁🤙🏻

All I can say guys is yum thanks guys
I hungry already! :) Every time I go Fukuya my eyes too big for my stomach and I order everyting.
I freakin’ love your videos.
(I’m waiting to hear your hardcore “pidgin” to kick in). Hahaha.
you guys should try out kailua assaggio's! its an italian restaurant located in kailua on uluniu st. it's also my uncle's restaurant & he has about 6 locations on this island so you guys should check it out sometime (:
Thanks for sharing
Variety is incredible.
Lol @ Felix's facial expressions
Thanks for the cool eats in Honolulu I’ll b there soon

nice video editing. how can I hire you to edit my videos that show the islands food places?
Thank you for watching and the compliment! Unfortunately, editing our videos is taking up all my time😆
@@AmandaFelixEats I know that’s why I was just doing all my videos on twitch and uploading a highlight to UA-cam. But unfortunately no editing 😆

And I agree with the other comment…I better stay away from that bakery. Don’t want to have to buy new jeans. Oh man…I’d try a pizza danish. Someplace MUST make that. 😳
