As I see from the outside, China's problem is socialism, or what socialism leads to. China is ruled by one party and one leader, the power was handed down from Mao Zedong. Mao never established a working class democratic system, because this is how power works. State ownership is exactly what Hakim promotes, but this leads to a new two class system, the political elites and the plebs. The elites don't care about the plebs and the plebs care only to appease the elites to enrich themself. The result is what you see in China.

France's post-war policy of dirigisme wasn't that different from the soviet union's new economic policy period in the 20's. Both were state directed capitalism and both were very effective in achieving their respective aims. Here in the UK we had a similar system after the war where large scale industry was nationalised and directed towards fulfilling social need rather than private greed. Socialist policies have been applied and have worked in countries which are now degenerating back into neoliberal capitalism, this is the clearest comparison I know of to demonstrate the superiority of socialism.

But the thing is that the first example is often true. We do need both, in different areas. Many bacterial populations are healthy so long as they don’t get into the wrong places or grow too large in the body. “Good bacteria” and “bad bacteria” can go from one to the other. This is exactly how a neoliberal would think about market failures.
We use antibiotics to kill harmful bacteria, but we ought to be careful as too much can harm the body. Just like chemo, revolution has side effects and should be used carefully. In the body we literally do have a mix of bacteria and natural antibiotics.

I used to (and to a degree still do) like to think of social democracy as a good transition phase between capitalism and socialism. In an ideal world it would be a gradual rollout of more taxes for rich, higher wages to match the actual living wage and increased social programs, culminating in a well paced transition to a new system. No bloodshed, no chaos, just a clean, gradual move from an old crappy system to a more equitable one.
The problem is that the rich don’t exactly like giving up their power, even just in things like higher taxes to help fund shelters for poor people to get back on their feet, even to ensure better and more fair wages for workers, or to change the legal system to be less skewed to the wealthy (both in laws that favour them and because money typically buys better legal counsel). And then there’s the right. The right that sees any increase in government or regulation meant to help people live better lives as “literally 1984” and “communist (insert country here), the right that has seemingly gotten more and more conspiratorial about the shady figures that run the world wanting to bring about a “Marxist communist Chinese globalist one party state” or whatever. The right that manages to get it halfway right about the way the world is skewed towards certain powerful people and groups but manages to then dive off the looney cliff of globalist conspiracy’s rather than just seeing that it’s a bunch of shitty people putting profit first and using “woke” marketing like putting up a rainbow flag or supporting LGBTQ people for the 15 seconds it takes for everyone to forget they use child labor.
It would be nice to live in a world where that transition was possible, where there didn’t have to be revolutions or strikes of millions because the environment is being slowly destroyed and it’s getting harder and harder to make a living on a single job and the government will work only enough to sell the lie that they’re for the people. Revolutions are often bloody, brutal hells that kill thousands of innocent people in the process of getting rid of a few and can replace bad with bad if not handled well. People get tired and can’t protest because they have to go to the job that doesn’t pay enough and work more hours just to get by. If it’s peaceful it never ends up being enough, and if it’s violent then suddenly it’s a rallying cry to the opposition, who usually have more money and guns. And if they somehow by a miracle succeed then you have to make sure the people who want to build and resolve differences get their hands on the wheel rather than people filled with hate and rage who can write and endless list of people to send to a brutal end, guilty or not.
Revolution is the best of a whole host of options and it’s still crap. Social democracy just seems like a utopia because that’s how bad regular capitalism without any proper regulation has made things for a lot of the world.

It might be better than America (but let's be honest, thats a low bar), but all the problems that arise because of the class war still persist. The capitalists influence politics to such an amount, that we privatize public services more and more, the rights of workers are getting lowered, the public services that remain are funded less and less because the rich are taxed less and less, and this goes on and on. Social Democracy isn't working. It doesn't address the fundamental conflict of Capitalism. To pretend an unstable balance between the working class and the capitalists is in any way good when its clear that it will tilt more and more towards the capitalist class - I call that a lie and a betrayal of the working people!

The mine produced lignite which is the dirtiest, most polluting form of coal. The capitalists making the decisions about the mine, decided to close because the cost of a ton of coal had gotten too expensive. The workers lost their jobs, but the lignite coal remains in the ground to this day.
The question: What would motivate workers-workers who own the means of production and make decisions democratically-to shutter their operation and voluntarily give up their jobs? Federal agencies and state agencies did-an adequate-job of preventing most pollution from leaving the mine site, but for the sake of the environment fossil fuels like coal should stay in the ground. The goals of the capitalists and the workers were different, but they both wanted to continue mining coal. To restate the question: Why would socialists coal miners vote against their own best interests for the greater good of society at large?

For example, if society would guarantee them new jobs with at least equal wages and benefits, then leaving their current workplace would be absolutely bearable. If you have a right to a job, like you had in the eastern block, then it is no big deal, when your company is shut down, cause you can always be certain, that you will get a new job soon.
So in a socialist society, you would need to do stuff like this, then it will be no big problem, to get workers to do the things neccessary for society, they will do them because they are not punished for it, like under capitalism, but rewarded.

America is way behind when it comes to capitalism vs socialism discourse. So as of right now social democracy is used to transition from capitalism to socialism, "like in Europe". Tho capitalism was necessary, it can and should be argued that we need a new and improved economic system such as socialism. While it is debatable as to what kind of economic systwm should replace capitalism, what is undeniable is that an economic system that benefits the working class and the people is a #1 priority.

I actually live in Germany, where we have "Soziale Marktwirtschaft", and even despite this, the gap between the Rich and the Poor has only widened, with almost a 1/5 of our children living in (relative) poverty.
Capitalism is individualistic, with the Individuals main goal being amassing more and more wealth for himself. As ressources are limited, archieving that goal for everyone is impossible as at some point, there simply won't be any (sufficient) new goods to gain.
Any sort of re-destribution of wealth from the rich to the poor contradicts the very essence of the capitalistic society. If we want to solve problems like Global Hunger, Education, Health, Climate Change etc. we need to take the step to post-capitalism, and Post-Capitalism can only be a system in which the goals of the collective take the highest priority, not the enrichment of the individual.

    Why does this sentiment exist?
Let me answer as a person from Czechoslovakia - a former communist nation in the eastern bloc
I can't speak for "the west" but this sentiment exists in former communist nations of eastern europe for the simple fact that the economy was horrible under "pure" socialism. Czechoslovakia was one of the wealthiest communist nations, yet it was very poor compared to Austria or Finland, which were both poorer than CSSR before the second world war. We've seen how our western neighbours and nations who were considered to be "shitholes" here overtook us. And this was not just an imaginary line on the GDP graph. We all felt it in practical day to day life. The average person was simply poorer. When my mother was first allowed to enter Austria she was shocked with everything they had here and we did not. It brought tears to her eyes and she always spoke about this as a very intense experience.
Because of how shit our economy was and because of the poverty we had here, people don't believe pure socialism is the answer. They still want the social securities of the past regime but they also want free markets and market economy for the opportunities and wealth it brings. The poverty of communism is still in living memory in Eastern Europe and because of that you will have a very hard time persuading anyone here that a pure socialist economy is the way to go. Nordic countries are VERY praised here, because that is precisely what people want - wealth, prospering market economy and social security and benefits

Serious question: what is the proposed solution then, with the current situation as it is today. Say I’m living in the United States. What is the ideal course of action in the next 10-50 years, and more importantly, what are the details of the actual goal? I’ve been interested in socialism and communism for over 10 years now, and no matter who I talk to, I can never get a clear answer to these two questions. There’s plenty of critique of capitalism. But I’ve found it extremely hard to find anyone seriously advocating for a concrete vision of the future that is socialist/communist. What is the actual plan? It’s not enough just to criticize. We know capitalism is bad. Now present an actual alternative to the market system and propose a way to get there. I used to think this was just a function of socialists/communists being bad at marketing since capitalism is kinda… all about marketing, and they don’t like capitalism. But now ten years into my search I’m starting to think people don’t really have a solid idea or vision of what they actually want to change. Critique alone is not enough.

You should look in to more videos on this channel, but really check out the reading recommendations. A lot has been written about this, more than can be shared easily in UA-cam comments which are a poor medium for this sort of discussion. It is important to note that there is not a prescriptive, one-size-fits-all approach and how we practice socialism is going to differ depending on where and when we do it; material conditions dictate how it has to work. However, there is no question that we must carry out a revolution to overthrow capitalism and replace it with socialism in whatever form those conditions require. There's no shortage of material on this.
For American communists, the important thing to recognize is that the US is a global hegemon extracting vast amounts of wealth from the imperial periphery in order to bribe its workers with what it has plundered. This has created a robust labor aristocracy and a strong false consciousness for American workers. Only when America's empire begins to come apart will revolution become a realistic possibility. So it is absolutely crucial for us to do all we can to both educate workers about Marxism and communism, and to take any opportunity to challenge American imperialism.

Socialism exists on a spectrum. You can have many forms of socialist societies. Many left wingers hold different beliefs. I think maybe you hold the misconception that socialism is one concrete idea, but rather, it is an umbrella of ideas. The plan: spread the idea. Socialism is an often-demonized ideology. Demystifying the scary word is a step towards class consciousness.

For example, if someone wanted to start a bakery, they could go to some state/community thing and request to be able to run a bakery. It wouldn't really be their bakery, but they could still have their fun of running a bakery. Of course I know socialist countries in current times have things like this. I feel the problem with going too extreme into state stuff leads into authoritarianism(not fun), but I believe this could be be rectified by leaning into a more decentralized format that revolves around community(commun-ism) rather than leaning into a centralizatized format.

I live in a country with a mixed economic system (not in Europe). And yet we still have poverty of almost 20%. Why? Because all the wealth is all concentrated in our greater [capital] region (and despite the 2% poverty incidence rate in the region, there's still a lot of slums especially in the capital city), all the money is getting eaten up by the 1% (including celebrities and politicians), the absolute bullcrap of a transportation system that favors cars more than public vehicles, the phase out of traditional vehicles in favor of modernized, yet less efficient vehicles which left some drivers unemployed, housing, a low minimum wage, etc., you get the point.
Corruption is indeed a big thing here (of which in turn can fool the people in supporting a person who is "tough on corruption" yet does nothing or the opposite of their platform) but I believe that is a fraction of all the societal problems we have here.

Endless holocausts is such a vibe. Like, it almost feels like reading dystopian sci-fi, but it's real. It's like playing TNO and seeing most countries in the world being terror bombed by the luftwaffe and seeing how usually at the end of the Russian unification it may give you salted land as a focus.
Like, no matter what you do, you're going to end up messed.

Now, it's getting tiring. Has any of you communist or anyone else have gone to university to study economics? Some nobody with no idea how the basic economy works, reading some books on a baiesed ideology is not a good idea in my opinion. Because you read some books but no have studied how economics works does not make you an expert or make you know that this set of ideas is necessarily the good one.

Yes, there are socialists, who studied economics.
The problem with economics (at least in my country) is, that it´s basically one big propaganda show, I know from friends, that they only teach you all the classical liberal and neoliberal stuff, maybe some Keynes if you´re lucky, and that´s it. Even questions about the MMT or similar stuff are immediatly shut down. You don´t learn how the economy functions, you learn how liberals think the economy functions. So if you want to dive into some anticapitalist theory, it is of course neccessary to understand the basics of economics, but you absolutely don´t have to study that shit, in fact it can be better if you have not
