The fact that Edward is usually protrayed as the oldest when he was only built in 1896 while there are characters older than him who look and sound younger is honestly surprising.
Disgraceful isn't it
I guess they didn't thought of it that way at the time I guess...just a theory.

Also, juist for funzies...
Odd how Glynn was considered one of the oldies yet is younger than Emily and Whiff...😂
@cosmic you forgot about beau
@@briandesens144I don't focus on anything BWBA
@@CosmicOfficalBWBA sucks if I'm going to be honest lol...
Also I never expected that moment that Glynn is younger then both Emily and Whiff :')
@@CosmicOfficalthat's Fair becouse there is :Ashima, Yong Bao, Nia and etc
WHHHHAAAAATTTTTTT
Though Edward is not the oldest character in the franchise, he is depicted as the older, wiser engine on Sodor, which can fool many. We still love Eddy though!
He's certainly the oldest, and wisest of the Fat Controller's engines in the original books.
“I was winning races before you were even a sketch on a dr ongoing board”. Is so crazy bro😂😂😂
Dr ongoing
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I wonder how Skarloey feels about no longer being the oldest engine on Sodor
If I’m being honest, he probably wouldn’t even care lmfao
From 1800,1900,2000 bruv really will survived every thing
I think he was never the oldest engine on sodor. However he IS the oldest engine that was actually built on Sodor.
@@fawkewe Skarloey wasn’t built on Sodor
Considering Neil was there to push him from the standard gauge to the narrow gauge, I don't think he ever thought he was.
“Making them the Ferraris of their time!” said Cosmic enthusiastically.
“NYOOM F*****G NYOOM!” shouted Emily.
Here is something that would be hard to chart. Throughout the show, the engines are always striving to be the most "useful". But, which truly is the most useful? In terms of the work they do, how reliable they are at doing it and who hasn't caused issues.
Edward i'd say. Unless you count HiT era.
Now it's time for the youngest characters in the series.
Are we talking about just steam steam engines, or all engines
Because if we are talking steam engines, Murdock is one of the youngest engines as he was one of the last steam locomotives built by British rail before dieselization
I mean..technically sir handel?
yea
Real
In characteristics, i think that Percy is youngest
Interesting fact for y'all: Stephen did actually appear in The Railway Series in the book "Thomas and The Great Railway Show". Just without a speaking role due to being faceless. I actually think that was the first ever faceless engine Thomas came across, so he was probably confused.
Anyway... That was a Fact about Stephen in terms of his appearances in Thomas and Friends. I hope everyone enjoyed this and has an awesome day/night wherever you are in the world.
I thought City of Truro was never shown with a face?
Apparently City of Truro talked to the engines for a long time, meaning that he has some form of communication.
You forgot Rajiv 😅
It's based upon the Fairy Queen ( East Indian Railway No. 22 ). She was built in 1855.
She ( occasionally ) runs heritage tours between New Delhi & Alwar / Rewari on 15th August & 26th January.
It would have been nice if you also added Novelty and Sans Pareil as "honorable mentions", given how they are in fact canonical to the Thomas universe since they appear in Stephen's flashback, but aside from this, it's definitely a video that the Thomas community deserved to get
Thank you!

"You call THAT racing?"
Steven: I was winning races before you even a sketch on a drawing board, younger Gordon
Glynn: *chuckles* good one there Steven, would you like a cup of tea with that?
Usually I would consider Edward, Skarloey, Rheneas, Neil, Glynn or Duke to be the more oldest engines since any one of them were the first engine to arrive on Sodor.
Flying Scotsman and Rex are also 100 years old as of recently this year.
Want to know the funniest thing, Thomas is Older than Gordon,
his model (more specifically, the second batch of said model he's from) was built in 1915, the year he arrived in a wartime incident and due to both his driver and fireman marrying local ladies and being written off as lost in the war by Britain, he was quietly sold to Sir Topham Hatt.
Gordon (like Henry) meanwhile was built between 1920-21 as a prototype design for Sir Nigel Gresley's A1 Pacific Design but didn't arrive in Sodor until after 1923, having been used in engineering experiments and defects were cured amongst him and his brothers, not so for Henry but you get the picture.
I learned this from the Thomas Wiki on the RWS page
Gordon is fatter
I'm pretty certain that out of the main numbered cast (1-11), Thomas is the third oldest, and only a few years younger than the venerable Toby.
I still wonder why the model-era TaF team never fully capitalized on the potential of a mature, thoughtful, and insightful side to Thomas. One similar to Edward and Skarloey.
Sure, he could have kept his cheeky side, but instead that could have stemmed from his surprising age and experience. Not to mention that all his siblings were eventually scrapped, so his cheeky side could be a way to cope with that.
Far as I'm aware Edward, James and Toby are all older than Thomas. So that'd make him 4th. (James' class is actually 2 years older than Toby's, which is a strange thought).
Oldest is horses. You can't tell me i'm wrong
Are they made of iron tho?
@@jamesgroccia644ever heard of the iron horse loser
@@jamesgroccia644 Horses may wear iron accessories such as horseshoes, so technically yes and no. But the oldest character would be Boulder since it is a literal rock, AND most rocks do have iron in them.
After a dream I had involving Emily, I kind of head cannon that she’s actually a reproduction of a Stirling Single if that makes any sense.
Wow i did not expect smudger! Everybody hates him except me , also Samson is pretty old being built by the same company as neil
I like him to
cosmic, you've outdone yourself here! Another fascinating *banger* of a vid, keep em coming 👊
i watch your channel
5:18 if you wish to see a double Fairlie in steam the place to go is the Festiniog railway in the town of Porthmaddoch in Wales.
Duke and Bertram were built in 1879 not 1863
As mentioned, it's based on their real-life basis to keep it consistent throughout the different media's of the franchise.
@@CosmicOffical oh ok
Ok I didn’t expect whiff being on the list
I never knew Emily and Whiff were older than Glynn.
Actually Emily’s class was produced from 1870-1895; not strictly in 1870. She could be 24 years younger than Glynn (and only 1 year younger than Edward)
And as @ordovicianinnova said, he does have a voice which makes him sound old. But Eddy is still in our hearts, old or not.
I do find this list of engines suited well due to how much it compares to the real-life railway.
The double-Fairlie design was first used on the Ffestiniog Railway in North-West Wales.
11:10 just a note that Iron Duke runs/ran on a gauge of 2,140mm, far in excess of any in the diagram.
godammn those are some old engines
Boulder was on the rails when he tried to kill Rusty, Skarloey, Rheneas, and Percy. His basis is the oldest. Therefore, he should be ranked the oldest
oh my god you're right ...
Great video man, those smash edits caught me off guard 😂
I've been waiting for a cosmic video!
I love when Gordon say’s really bruh with his eyes
The later CGI area of Thomas really gave the characters their true colors like before
Cosmic is so good at English that chat gpt asks cosmic to write his essays
Like seriously he has at least 100 PhDs in English like how do you english so good?!
And i love the graceful rouch of memes here and there keep up teh good work 😊
Thank you. Blame my GCSEs for my english. Forced me to improve my previous poor vocabulary. I wake every day now and go it's englishing time and english everywhere. It's a serious problem.
Help.
for such a high quality document i didnt expect there to be memes, very good video.
Can't help but wish we could've seen more of Iron Duke, his broad gauge railway too. His wagons, coaches, etc. @cosmicoffical
2:53 Emily as a Ferrari 😂
12:22 nice idea for a future story?
i love your vids
my Thomas question is given the timeline of sodor and all the engines that ever ran on it scrap or not, could you make an engine arrival video from the first mechanical character to the last introduced and their origins as well?
Maybe you can make a video about: Who has had the most siblings or are still alive?
Good idea, i'll putting it in my idea list.
😁👍
Ferrari Emily: F*CKING NYOOM
Iron duke isn't that old. In fact he's only around 35 years old.
He is an iron duke class, but he is based not on an original Iron duke, he's the Replica built in 1985 for the 'Great Western 150' celebrations.
and the timeline shots are also very great😊
mighty mac kind of makes me think of Janus
LOL the vine boom
I’m surprised Edward wasn’t on the list
Same! He was built in 1896 which is many years from the young this list.
loved how you did my number 1 favourite: STEPHEN!
0:24 😂😂😂
Fun Fact: Iron Duke's Tender Is Just a Copy of Emily's.
That was very interesting 🙂🌺
I have so many engines I wanna see on my bucket list now
Videos are good as usual Cosmic, keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
I actually made a video like this but instead I included every TTTE character (Okay, almost every character). I’m more than a little surprised Samson didn’t make it in the top ten. Overall, a pretty good video.
Good catch on Samson! I thought he would have probably make the list but couldn't find anything that dates back further than anything on this list. It's annoying because it's hard to find exact build dates for such old and obscure engines.
You cuold make a video on whos most young / newest built engine on sodor.😅
I kept thinking this was the fastest locomotive, because I have that saved in my watch later too😂
Honorable mention to Albert the furness engine who was built in 1872, 1 year after Glynn although was most likely scrapped in the 20s
ALMOST made the list
Hiro: yep, I'm called the master of the railway but I'm not in this rating
If that is gonna be only the characters not only enginee, then it would be boulder.
I paused at this moment right here 7:40 and died laughing because I wasn't expecting this to use a Scottish Stereotype found at random
“Sir Robert norramby” 💀!
2:53 voom
Don't forget about Beau as he's based on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad's 3 classic Baldwin 4-4-0 Americans, in which the first of them, the No. 11 'Reno', was built back in 1872.
I don't focus on BWBA characters. Plus he's too young for the list.
Watch the video, the number 10 is 1871
I think everyone knew Stephen would be the oldest. After all, his design paved way for steam engines for over a century.
Great
This is the backstory of skarloey and rheneas. From 1864 to 1866. Talyllyn and dolgoch. Thier older twin brothers. Before Thomas and his beloved friends.
2:53 NEEEEAAAAAAA NEEEEAAAAA F*CKING NEEEAAAWWWWWWW
Imagine thinking your the oldest and your made in 1896 but there's a trains thats build on 1829 now thats old!
0:17 💀 that roast tho
Bro roasted Gordon💀
It's so funny to think that Thomas is younger than Gordon when in reality, Thomas is actually almost the same age as Toby
“Young gordon” *vine boom*
12:34 that was so fuckin random but so funny for no reason at the same time😭
One of the best roast in my life 🤯
0:14
If only Iron Duke and Firefly actually ran...
I’m pretty sure the Iron duke replica hasn’t worked since at least the 1990’s 😕
Oh really? that's very sad... :(
NEW THOMAS LORE JUST DROPPED
You really are creative with the script really great in my opinion
Thank you!
@@CosmicOffical Your welcome sir
5:13 'Many railways'??? The Ffestiniog railway in North Wales is the *only* place with operational double-Fairlies.
Whiff Looks Like Albert From The Railway Series Book, Thomas And Victoria.
Here's a question: What if HO/OO gauge locomotives became Sentient?
then that would be a big problem lol
Can you make a UA-cam video about what is the newest Thomas character
What if Iron Duke has the memories of the original because he's an exact replica? Explain the moustache and possibly his knowledge of the past
interesting theory...
Wait a Second,If Mighty Mac was Built in 1869,The Golden Spike In That Year Led To The Trascontial Railroad
Why’d Glynn and Stephen do Gordon like dat? Lol
I had no idea that Emily was a grandma
If you add in the diesel locomotives you will see that they are 100-190 years younger than Stephen 1829. 150 years younger than him is the HST Twins Pip and Emma 1979.
@CosmicOffical why didn't you mention the ffestinog railway which is the true home of the Double Fairlies. They still operate several of them throughout the year?
Don't know. Thought it was in the script.
10:03 I thought Neil died of overwork in 1901?
what no i hope he didn't...
0:15 bro got roasted by grandpa
Dang, i need Emily's skin care routine 😂
i like how the number 1 was working where the other number 1 works
0:19 got me and 2:54
Blud really ignored sans pareil and novelty , who are technically canon here, since they made a cameo in King of the railway.
Or how Hiro is depicted as being older and sounding it when in fact he's actually younger than Thomas!!!
the music piece canon in D/C will haunt me for the rest of my life lol
I don't think Iron Duke counts, since it's the replica that appears in the book, not the original. That means he was built in 1985.
Who decided that we should design trains with faces and emotions anyway?
I saw stephen when he showed the picture of the museum
There’s a rocket at the Henry Ford Museum
