ok after you sharpen the hook and make it all bright and shiny would it be a good idea to slightly go over the the point in a dark pen to take the shine off ?

Jason Hayward used to live up the road from me and showed me how to sharpen hooks the right way and you are 100% spot on with what you say.

Towards the point is the way I would do it. The hook is springy, so the tip will be drawn into the abrasive as the hook flexes to open out to a bigger circle. This aligns the tip along the file correctly. Otherwise the tip would escape its attentions as the hook flexed vice versa to tighten the turn into a smaller circle. I couldn't get my eyeballs between the hook and the file, so I've took a guess at it....

ridiculous I've fished all my life caught many many impressive fish from the sea to freshwater from one side of the world to the other they are spending to much time on the bank thinking to much.do people really believe you have to sharpen your hooks for cArp. hooks are more then sharp enough to hook a carp .the only time I have ever needed to sharpen hooks is for sharks ,most game fish and tiger fish in Africa and if people no anything about these fish they will no why

something worth pointing out to you here is that when fishing for big carp 99.9 percent of the time the angler is using a rig that relys soley on the fish hooking itself. Bolt style rigs are fished with heavy leads to set the hook while the fish feed on the bottom.
With all this considered, the sharpness of the hook is probably one of the most important aspects of carp fishing.
So no, this is definately not ridiculous.
