    What went wrong ?
    It hit the ground.
Planes can glide, but need a place to land. He probably was going to land on the highway, but realized he would take out a few cars, and went to the side.
And the news media saying it's a " small engine plane " has nothing to do with anything. Actually it is an above average size family plane.

no the main issue was flying at night. you should avoid flying at night in these small planes because you cannot see or place to land in the dark. pretty simple. no amount of hurry is worth your life. there was no real reason him to fly at night in an unfamiliar area.

      Bunch of dumb info here.

Unfortunately, too many pilots just get in their planes and fly now-a-days. The flight track shows this aircraft being flown over the runway at John Tune Airport to the South, Soutwest which took him over open fields and then turned 180 degrees back toward the airport but then away from open fields and the Cumberland River (Bells Bend) beneath him, toward I-40 and the ultimate crash site. Flying at night in unfamiliar territory and having an engine failure combines for a high probability of crashing and dying.

Engine just quitting is usually fuel starvation. But exploding like it did means it had fuel so did the Pilot run a tank dry and forget to switch tanks?

A flat spin stall. Waiting to read about the pilot's qualifications.

He hit by the road and ended up on that hill. That aircraft turns like a truck. Pilot got behind the curve and may have stalled as he tried to make the bank but it wasn't a flatspin. Stall speed for a piper lance 2 is 61 kias. Look again.

@@crapton9002 Correct. From his altitude, in that plane, he would've been in the incipient spin and hit the ground before it could develop into a full spin.

Was the pilot IFR or VFR? Surely should have had Instrument night rating. Very sad and deepest condolences to all involved and their families.

Wrong, the tower controller was trying to convince the pilot to glide beyond the airplane's range to reach the airport, to which the pilot replied he could not reach it more than once. The controller should have encouraged the pilot to find a field to land on instead of egging him on to the airport. The controller was far from heroic, he was not hearing the facts the pilot was trying to relay.

Night-time emergency landing and the pilot sounded behind the curve at 1,600 ft.
He ran out of altitude before he could make the turn to land on the highway by the looks of it.
The T tail piper Lance 2 turns like a dumptruck lacking elevator authority some pilots have said.
The pilot was new to that aircraft and had just overflown the airport he was trying to land at being unfamiliar with the area also. Nightmare senerio. RIP

Tragically there is a lot of this going on recently no matter the 'qualifications'?, at least it seems that way? Would love to see something about crashes summed, or 'quantitatively' in the last few years. Maybe it's just what the YT algo feeds me?
    Prayers to family, relations, community.

It's still 200K times safer to fly in a plane than ride in a car.
Rest in peace to the 5 souls.
