It's more so not the over harvesting, but the way it's harvested when they cut too deeply into the trees heartwood it takes longer for the tree to heal. Also the medicinal quality comes from boswellic acid which occurs only in the species of Boswellia sacra/carteri, serrata, and papyfera. Of the 19 species of Boswellia, B. ameero from Socotra is one of the most fragrant, lending it well to perfumery. I've been growing Boswellia species now for two years here in Florida and by no means an expert, but I'm learning very quickly the way these trees grow. And theres two distinct forms of Boswellia that grow, those from the humid tropics(b. serrata), and those from the arid tropics (b. sacra).
You're right. Frankincense healed me from my childhood wounds. I went years grieving n during this time, my mum burned some Bakhoor as she comes from Aden, Yemen. I discovered particularly the Frankincense fragrance helped me in relieving pain, depression and anxiety. Discovered it by accident. Now I burn it in my room.
The best Hojari Loban is from Salalah, Dhufar Province at Oman, and the cost of 1 KG is about 350 USD. It is actually used as a medicine and it is not preferable to burn it due to its price. However, there are other types of Loban that are used as incense.

Dr. Nikhil since I watched this post of yours I wanted to send for you the Omani hojari frankincense dahn from a local house named Reydan. I visited their boutique today and bought for you a vile of their signature hojari oil. How can I send it to you? I am sure you will like it.
Isn't "Guggul" Commiphora mukul (related to myrrh)? To me Royal Green smells more piney, "Bone White" smells minty, and the regular half-clear sacra more lemony.
Hi, does incense dissolve in alcohol? I want to make perfumes with it, but before i buy some cristals i need to know their behavior in pure ethilic alcohol
I have to contradict you in two points. There is a study from 2012 that shows that Sacra and Carterii are actually different species. Reference: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22835693. And no, Serrata is not Guggul. Guggul is a totally different resin, also called Indian myrrh. The botanic name hence is Commiphora mukul. Obviously, Commiphora is not Boswellia. What you mean, is Salai Guggal. That is in fact a different name for Serrata.
I had viewed this video earlier also. But I beg to differ about Indian frankincense. Guggul is myrrh and not loban. Indians clearly differentiate between these two. Boswellia serrata is much dry looking resin than guggul. Bengalis generally use this resin( Boswellia serrata) during pujo, and it is called dhuno. I , myself had collected it from the tribals of Panchmarhi, MP and even seen when these were collected. Though it is a bit different from the actual Boswellia serrata, It is having an amazing smell .But Guggul/myrrh comes from Commifora wightii. This plant can be seen at FFDC, Kannauj for ready reference and quite different from Boswellia serrata. Actually we have so many resins in India under the common umbrella term of loban that it is difficult to differentiate. :D But Guggul is myrrh
@@nikhilsfrags Yes, Guggul is known as Indian Myrrh - a bit different from West Asian Myrrh. But used to get exported from India as a separate entity than Loban since at least 1st Century CE.
