- Beef Stew Like My Mom Made
1 ½ to 2 pounds of beef stew cubes
1 large onion chopped
3 large carrots peeled and cut in coins
1 quart beef stock - reduced sodium or home canned
1 pint of canned tomatoes
2 TBSPS tomato paste
3 or 4 cloves garlic chopped rough
1 tsp black pepper
2 large bay leaves
3 or 4 medium potatoes cut in bite size pieces
In a hot pan heat 3 tablespoons of oil and brown the beef. Add the beef to a large pot or dutch oven. Add the onions and garlic to the hot pan and sauté for 3 or 4 minutes. Add the onion mixture to the pot with the beef. Add ½ the beef stock to the frying pan and scrape up the bits off the bottom and then dump it into the pot with the remaining stock. Add the canned tomatoes, the tomato paste, the carrots and the pepper and bay leaves. Cover and put into a 325-degree oven for an hour and one half. Add the potatoes and return to the oven for 30 minutes or until the potatoes are fork tender.

I am a year round soup and stew person. Sometimes you just need a warm hug, regardless of the season.
This is true!
Yes! We want the cornbread recipe and show!
Colleen there is not a better comfort food than beef stew. Your recipe will be going on our table this week. Thank you so much. God Bless🙏🏻
I've never put one in the oven. Great idea
Thank you!
Hi Colleen. I live in central Pennsylvania (about 30 miles from Imler!). I smile as I listen to the stories about your family as they sound so similar to my life on the farm. I grew up in the Philadelphia area. Never ate venison, never saw a fully stocked fruit cellar in the fall, never saw a full deep freeze after hunting season. What a hard yet wonderful life. Love to hear about your family.
Thank you for your comments! And I love to hear that you are so close to Imler. I hope to visit there someday.
My Mom always floured the meat and fried it till brown. She had the old guardian pans that she used everyday. When she drug out the roaster we would get sooo excited because it was either beef roast or stew with homemade buns. Oh my goodness I can still taste them😋. I love hearing stories of people's childhoods and how they lived. I could listen to you all day♥️ Thanks for the video and yes a cornbread video would be great! Seems everyone makes it different so I would love to know if Canadians make theirs different. Have a blessed week💕🙏🏼💕
I grew up with beef stew made in a pressure cooker. Still make it that way today. Yours looks delicious as well. Thank you.
Thank you for watching 👀!
Oh, I loved my dear Mums stew ❤ Made with love, like yours!❤ Thank you for the memories.
I enjoy the sound of frying. It tricks me into thinking i can smell it. Yum yum.
I love beef stew and this looks like a wonderful one. I LOVE when you share your family stories. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for the bread machine recipes & all of your recipes! I have had success with my bread machine finally!
My Mum floured the meat too, so that is what I do. I find it thickens up the sauce much easier. We also put in turnip, but Mum never used canned tomatoes, so I don't put them in either. We always simmer it on top of the stove, and had Dumplings on the top. I must make a pot of stew before the cold weather is over!❤
Stew and dumplings was my favourite when I was a kid, still love it.
Loved the recipe, I have always fixed stew in my Crockpot, but I will definitely try fixing it in the oven. You give really clear directions. I loved the stories about your family. Did your dad make socks for the kids? What great memories you must have.
Yes, dad made socks of all shapes, sizes and colors.
Hi Colleen, I'll be watching this video on the TV because I love the big picture. I can't reply on the TV, but I have figured out how to like it on there. I'll be watching it today. Love beef stew, thanks for sharing. Stay well and safe.
My family likes soup and stew all year too! That looks good for a great weekend meal. Thanks for sharing.
Cornbread looks wonderful with stew!
They are really good together!
Haha I start every meal with onions and garlic
I’m really enjoying hearing about your family. (And the recipes of course) I remember when my Dad brought home granulated garlic for the first time and put it on our burgers before he grilled them. Life changing!
That was just a lovely conversation.
Thank you!
Going to try this tonight. Looks great. Cornbread recipe would be nice. Thanks
This is a very similar recipe that I have used for about 50 years. My recipe came from a Crisco (shortening) cookbook. I add celery also to mine. I really enjoy your videos.
Always had biscuits whith stew 🍲 growing up . Going to have yo try this one it looked really good .. haven't made or had stew 🍲 in i cant remember how long lol 😂 my son would love it . Y'all have a Blessed weekend stay safe, stay healthy, stay positive always make it fun Love from Tucson Arizona 💗🦎🌵🌻🦉👩🌾🌵🦎💗
I always toss the meat in flour, then brown it. It gives a nice flavor and also helps to thicken the stew a bit. I also add celery to mine. I buy the tins of tomato paste, so much cheaper, i put the leftovers in a small ice cube tray and freeze them. When i need some, i just pop one out and add to what i am making, soup, stew, etc..
I love beef stew, great recipe.
I love stews and soups and yours looks very good I love the soups and stews year round😊
Lovely video and recipe. I always like hearing your stories. The blob of butter and flour you use to thicken at the end is called “beurre manié”. Basically a reverse roux. Tfs.
Yes, that's what its called but chances are people will remember the blob...lol
@@oursilvermoments6028 Haha! Absolutely true. ♥️ from Montreal.
With mushrooms and celery.
The addition of mushrooms and celery would be delicious 😋
Beef stew looks delicious.
Hi, I tried your beef stew and it is fantastic.
I love your family stories! Your recipes are always so yummy! 💛
Thank you Darlene!
This looks so good!
It is interesting to me to see how people from different areas make the same dish. My stew is likely mom made stew except for cooking method. She cooked hers in a large pot on top if the stove, but I use a slow cooker. I do not believe I have ever had stew with tomatoes in it which I'm
My fav comfort food.❤❤
I freeze my leftover canned tomato paste.
Very nice!
Thank you!
This beef stew looks so amazing!!! I'm definitely trying this recipe!!! And I don't even have to say it because you already know that you're looking absolutely gorgeous as always!!! Colleen 😘 thanks for sharing!! Always look forward to the next video 👍😁
Thank you Keith! I hope you enjoy it. Best wishes, Colleen
You're welcome Colleen 😉 your such a beautiful woman! Thanks for all of the excellent videos!!!! 👍
This looks great Colleen!😊
Thank you Mary ❤️
Amazing!
Thank you!
I would love a good cornbread recipe……
Yum❤
Yum
So tasty!
My tomato paste in a can is so much cheaper so I scoop out tbs into saran and freeze it.
Yes, that's a great way to do it as well.
I love onions but have two kids allergic. That really make it difficult to make flavorful dishes.
😋😋🍲❤❤💐
