OMG this is SO HELPFUL! I volunteered to sub for a friend for big band jazz and the conductor put me on the spot to do 4 bars of drum solo repeatedly. I was clueless and later discovered it's called "Trading fours". This video is so helpful because it demonstrates the context. I'm hoping to be more prepared for next week's rehearsal with this helpful video!
a b0bfelice Trading fours ... when I first started playing, I didn’t know what to do. A good friend told me that I needed to develop a series of two bar fills and four bar fills then commit them to memory. Good luck at your next rehearsal.
God bless,
John X
I really enjoy watching you play.

Thank you, John,
for all the wonderful, accessible and very musical ideas. I never know quite what to play when four's are called. Having a few of your examples under my belt will be very helpful. I understand what you are doing with the bass drum, but a shot of your right foot would be a plus too.
Wonderful, Illuminating, excellent demo.
Best,
David
Leslie,
I'm happy to hear these fills will be helpful. Be sure to check out the four 2-bar fill lessons that I have on my UA-cam page. These are the building blocks for my 4 bar fills. I'm sure you will enjoy them and find them very helpful as well.

JohnX Drum Lessons of course yes dear sir :D
You have inspired me to put 3 rivets in my bounce ride!
I was lucky enough to have Zildjian do it for me. I would be nervous to drill the cymbal myself.
HI John, and thanks a lot for your really nice jazzy lessons, Guillaume from france
I'm glad you liked the lesson. I'll be posting many more jazz lessons at JohnXDrums.com.

Excellent video John!
Super stoked,And is that ride to your right a medium constantinople with a rivet?
Hey, John if you could show what the bass drum does, that'd be great as well; thanks!
I wish I would have used a bass drum camera for this series. I started to use one on all of the videos I recorded after this series.
oh i see, good stuff haha
Big Ug John, trading 8's are next bro ?
+A. Christopher Johnson
Chris,
Thanks for the comment. I do not have plans to make a trading 8's video. To play 4's you play to groups of 2. To play 8's you play 2 groups of 4, Give it a try.
Best wishes,
John X

+JohnX Drum Lessons Will do fam
Hey John, perfect drum lesson. this ride is a Bounce ride?
Yep. A Zildjian 22" K Constantinople Bounce Ride with 3 rivets.
Hi John i just purchased 7
4 bar series, but I’ve not received the worksheet, please advise, Josefina
👍🍄🥁
Hi there John, great video's, i'm fast becoming fluent in all these fills due to your great teaching methods!!! One question though.... i've been learning these fills whilst keeping the hi-hat rolling on 2+4, would you consider this incorrect as i just noticed you're not and if so is there any particular reason?
I'll play the hi hat on 2&4 most of the time. However, it's not always necessary. The fills in this series felt better with out the hi-hat so I left it off.
Great lessons ! I wonder what is your opinion on keeping the foot hh on 2 and 4 going during the four bar fill ?
That is an excellent question. I used to think that I always had to play the hi-hat on 2 and 4 during a fill. Then, after spending a lot of time with my good friend and great jazz drummer, Colin Bailey, I came to realize that you only need to play the hi-hat when it's comfortable and it feels good. Don't obsess over it like I did in my earlier days.
i would like to know if it possible could you explain and anylyze the drum pattern for wes montgomery's tune trick bag in one of your videos
Hi John. Hope you are not getting sick of answering this question: what was that sizzle ride? I don't think K Con has a model with rivets?
It's a Zildjian K Constantinople Bounce Ride with three rivets added at the factory.
Thanks!
Hi John. What is your ride cymbal? It is perfect for jazz.
Robert,
I love that cymbal. It's a 22" K Constantinople Bounce Ride with 3 rivets. I just used the same cymbal on my jazz phrase lesson course. Check out that video.
ua-cam.com/video/fW9MkNxq-34/v-deo.html
THOSE cymbals sure sound nice brand??
Zildjian 22" K Constantinople Bounce Ride with 3 rivets, 20" K Constantinople Hi Bell Thin, 14" K Constantinople Hi-Hats
What aquarian heads are you using john?
The snare and tom heads are all Aquarian Texture coated heads. The bass drum head is a coated Super Kick I.
what ride do you use?
The ride cymbal I use in this video is a Zildjian 22" K Constantinople Bounce Ride with 3 rivets
What ride cymbal were you using ?
It's a Zildjian K Constantinople Bounce ride with three rivets.
