    Okay, as someone who is British, I would just like to say that people rarely attempt British-style homes (particularly non-British people) and when they do they often do not quite capture the Britishness, but this is perfect!

    The difference between the bricks is because the owners tend to go the cheaper route and have the brick work on the front re done but not the side seen as its hardly seen.

      Also a lot of people have older houses re-clad with faux brick when it's due for re-pointing because it's more expensive to clean the bricks up.

    I'm British and you were pretty much exactly right on all of the points you made. I don't know about the bricks on the side of the houses but it's probably just because people might clean the front of the house because that's where most people would see it from.
    About the floor plan. Most older houses in England are built with rather closed floor plans but are a lot of the time renovated into open plan.

    • @JamesTurnerYT
      @JamesTurnerYT  7 років тому +10

      Yeah, it did end up a little larger on the inside than I intended, however, kinda useful in Sims to have a bit more space!
      As for the chimney, I did think about that as I was doing the living room, but totally forgot to do it

    • @oursavior9883
      @oursavior9883 7 років тому +11

      People have their chimney's blocked off, so it is realistic.
      Maybe on the second house you could do it how it would have originally looked? Maybe remove the back extension too, as that wouldn't have been there originally. Have the kitchen as a galley, and have the living room and dining room separated by a door. Also, the downstairs toilet would likely have just been a cupboard when it was originally built, so maybe do that too.

    *Sits in smaller, closed-plan British semi-detached home whilst sipping tea* "Captured the essence of these houses pretty well, I must say".
    And the side walls tend to have less money spent on them in order to make the front of the house look nicer. And the interior design of the browns in the kitchen is pretty accurate too! I don't think I've seen many houses here in the UK without a brown or beige kitchen, unless it has been drastically updated. I love this build!

      Depends when the house was built and what it's owners have done to it since I suppose. My old house was Edwardian built and would have had the dining room separate from the living room, but a few of them had the wall between made into a wide arch opening it up and covering over a door but my nans who was two doors up still had the original wall dividing the two.

However, the facade of the house is usually maintained or renovated by the owner and so new bricks may be replaced, cleaned etc for aesthetic or sale... and that's why they can look different.....also Sydney *Shakes fist*

      Jack Davis so i’ve heard that people have been reinstating them or just not getting rid of them recently which is actually quite good since i’m a fan of fireplaces but i’ve noticed that sometimes when people are renovating homes they remove the fireplace as the make the home look dated, i didn’t mean english people in general i meant like people getting rid of the fireplaces that look out of place

    @MsSagaEl 7 років тому +21

    Walls on the side always look different? I've literally never seen that before, considering I grew up in a house very much like this one. Also yes to the "we have big fences" comment. Also, houses on the estate I grew up on all had one of two different floorplans, because people could decide which they preferred if they brought them while they were being built. And both floorplans were TOTALLY different from one another downstairs. But the same upstairs.

    • @MsSagaEl
      @MsSagaEl 7 років тому

      Ahh fair enough, might just be the area I'm in. We have quite a few houses where the upstairs front is different and just a flat painted cream, a wooden board or that old Tudor style, but I've never seen any houses that are a fully different brick or whatever on the front to the rest of the house.
      I'd assume with council homes it's different because the person living in them when they were built didn't own them, so they didn't get to pick the floorplan. Just like how I work with someone who asked for tonnes of extra sockets installed in her house while it was being built. If you own something, they're going to want to customise it somewhat to suit you so you're happy with your new home, but the council aren't quite as kind. Same as where I live now, every house seems to have air con (thank god. Not often you see that here in the UK) but it's only in one room, randomly, so it seems like that was put in when they were built, but it was put where each person wanted it.

    The sad thing is, a house like this is considered luxury in the U.K. Average houses are 3 bedrooms, one being a box room. One bathroom upstairs, small kitchen and living room and no dining room, the dining table often goes in the kitchen making it more cramped. Washing machine and dryer also installed in the kitchen. Tiny back and front yard, often fully paved so no personal green space and no room for expansion. Lucky if you have a driveway or a garage, often having to park on the road in front of your house. Attics are also small, meaning no expansion upwards. For a house like in the vid, you’d have to have a pretty decent paying job, or even a qualified profession like a being a doctor. A family of 6 would live in a 3 bedroom house, parents often having the box room and two kids living in each of the other rooms. House prices all over the U.K. are ridiculous, like majorly bad. A house like I described would set you back about £400,000, in city’s like London however you’re looking in the region of about £800,000 if you’re lucky. A dingy little 3 bedroom attached terrace recently sold for £1,200,000 in London... And the prices are rising causing the current generation to take out mortgages which take up to 15 years to pay off. It’s sad, common folk working hard for nothing whilst the rich get richer.

    • @indymindy1037
      @indymindy1037 5 років тому +16

      Come up north! House prices aren't great but you can still buy houses like you described (maybe only two bedrooms) for £50,000. A house like this though would probably be £275,000. Of course, not everyone can be up north because of work, family etc
      Edit: I live in Durham and the very cheap houses are in the mining villages so there isn't as much access to shops and schools which brings down the value x

    • @sewell2777
      @sewell2777 5 років тому +7

      Indy Mindy I do live in the north! I’ve noticed house prices up here are massively rising too, at least where I live (not far from Durham)! And the further south you get, the more pricey the house. It’s easier if you’re single, a 2 bedroom house would do just fine, but for families, especially first time family’s/buyers, it’s increasingly harder :/

    • @indymindy1037
      @indymindy1037 5 років тому +1

      @@sewell2777 Oh cool! I think it's starting to become quite a big issue that it's getting tricky to get on the housing ladder :( On the bright side, some of the houses here that would be in the millions down south are actually (slightly) more affordable. There was a house for sale that was 6 bedrooms and it had a pool and it was selling for £450,000! Way beyond my budget but I thought it was pretty cool :)

    Picket fence in the middle of the gardens as well as on the outside bit, not brick.
    I’ve never seen a semi-detached house with a different colour brick on the side.
    Often the lights are in groups of 3 weirdly angled bulbs or lights with tacky shades around them (as in, patterned or pink or something).
