For nesting material I just use a pair of scissor and cut some nice grass out of the yard where the lawn mower doesn't cut it.

@@birdnerd Sure ! I really want to know this here is my question. I have red head white chest male and black head purple chest female . So , is my result going to be red head purple breast chicks ? Both male and female offspring? Both are green back .
Please , do let me know
      Thank you !

Gouldian genetics are tricky because you don’t know if they are split to any other colors. If they are not split to anything you should get red headed males split to black head with purple breast split to white breast. Females would be the same as the males.

Just make sure that the coco fiber strings are not long. I cut them into about 10-15 cm long strings. Any longer and you might end up with the wrapped around feet and toes thing. I didn't know this so in one season I had 4 birds just dangling out of their nest with string wrapped around their legs when I came home from work. Thankfully, they were all okay, but, never again will I not cut up the coco fiber. When it comes to tossing, a deeper nest box helps a lot, or longer with a divider in. There are also the "pistol" shaped nest boxes made to make sure they won't toss chicks. Also works well. By the way, I read an article about gouldians where it said that once the second clutch comes around, the male might bring his older chicks with him into the nest and teach them to feed the new chicks. Have you ever seen this?

How do you soak seeds properly and do you mix in other ingredients to your egg food?

I'll second how good cocofibre is for Gouldians. They build perfect oval nests within the boxes with it, some to the point where you can barely see inside even when opening the door on the back. My Stars on the other hand are more Zebra like in terms of they are happy to use anything that they can get to build with lol... A good tip with chick tossing along with the no nest checking is young birds can be more prone so to combat that is to try and put a younger bird with a more mature experienced bird, I've found this to be quite effective but if I'm honest I've only ever had 1 male who consistently pitched the chicks so he no longer gets to breed unfortunately.

I agree with NOT using string! I'm new with gouldian finches and I gave them a nesting material box that has a circle hole cut out so the birds can peck out the string, sold on Amazon. 2 babies died, one suffocated with a ball of string in its mouth, the other had swallowed long piece a string that was stuck in its neck and had about an inch of string hanging out of its mouth.

Nice video. Thanks... question. Does it help to seperate boys and girls in general ? To give the girls more peace to get ready to breed ?

I have found that this does help when I separate them. Many times they will sync up and molt together when they are all one gender.

Why my golds not lay eggs? Every time they lay eggs, some of them lay very irregularly, so none of my eggs hatch. What is the solution?
