- "Singin' in the Rain"
Song written in 1929
Music by Nacio Herb Brown
Lyrics by Arthur Freed
Originally from The Hollywood Revue of 1929
Sung by Gene Kelly as Don Lockwood
Lyrics:
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo...
I'm singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feelin'
I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Just singin',
Singin' in the rain
Dancin' in the rain
Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah
Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah
I'm happy again!
I'm singin' and dancin' in the rain!
I'm dancin' and singin' in the rain...
[ADDITIONAL VERSE]
Why am I smiling
And why do I sing?
Why does September
Seem sunny as spring?
Why do I get up
Each morning and start?
Happy and head up
With joy in my heart
Why is each new task
A trifle to do?
Because I am living
A life full of you. - Розваги
makes me cry as I think of the good times when my wife was alive. God how I miss her.
Hang in there, brother.
one day you'll be with her again !positive vibes

is it just me, or do old movies bring warmth and calmness to your heart. the cinematography and graphics are something like... self-actualization
I know...there's this unexplainable joy I get from watching films from the later 50s, 60s and 70s and even 80s
Exactly
I am old. But most of the films were very simple. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. And that wasn't just the musicals!!!! it was more fun back then. It was entertainment. Nobody was wanting to leave the cinema disappointed. So different now.
I feel the same way I'm 23 and I love old movies and shows specially western. ik I sound old school but that's okay I get it from my grandma.
True .
This is about THE MOMENT when you are overflowing with joy and boundless energy and you just start being silly and goofy because the feeling has to come out. Being alive! Yes!!
one of the most best it Avery good classic
the movie gives you a warm feeling
Well said! Life is a blessing we shouldn't take for granted 👍👍
Same.
One of the best feelings on earth
Tells him to take care of his throat, and he proceeds to dance without an umbrella in the middle of a downpour for 5 min. That’s committment
Well, it’s symbolism. She’s telling him to be careful, and cautious, and he’s doing the opposite - just living in the joy of the moment
Or love.
@@NoOne-kr4jcit wasn't 1 take. This scene took 8 hours and Gene ended up getting pneumonia
@@antsants6470 this scene was shot over a couple of days.

I'm no hipster at all, but it truly is sad that this style of music, not even movies is lost in this time. I sincerely enjoy the majroity of todays music, but these musicals and this era of music just creates a different feeling that can't be replicated by other genres for me.
Alex Lala I agree! I listen to classical music and baroque and whatnot, and there is plenty of emotion and genius in it. I'm not saying you have to listen to whatever music I listen to, I'm just saying that not all music is all too bad. I agree, though, that today's music lacks any true distinct substance that can around emotion. Although, I must say some modern composers like John Williams and Alan Silvestri are amazing.
La la Land is a musical. Go see it.
Alex Lala Too bad we couldnt conserve our culture.
La La land will like to have a word with you.
nsmc99
I mean, it really just depends on what you listen to. I mean, the level between Buckethead's Soothsayer and your average Pop song is grand.
Anytime it rains, I always say, "Looks like Gene Kelly decided to come out today."
No you don't. You ain't gotta lie.
@@Tre-sc4xjhow do you know what he does goofy ? 🤡
Gene made dancing look so effortless.

Paula Abdul based many of the music videos from her debut album on Gene Kelly & Bob Fosse routines
"This california dew is just a little heavier than usual"
"Really? From where I'm stand the sun is shining all over the place"
I just want to point out how smoothe that line was
It was smoother than butter on bagel
Are you Jewish?
Lol, sorry just joking!
actually yeah
Who puts butter on a bagel? I put strawberry cream cheese on mine or regular cream cheese but never butter
He should have said, From where Im standing, the sun is shining in front of me. This suggests that the women he was talking to is as good as the sun.
+OfficialEmiliano um when its toasted a buttered bagel is phenomenal
Anyone get that feeling from older movie music???
All the time
Oh yes
Loads of Nostalgia for no reason why even though I wasn’t around in that time and I for some reason love the 30s-mid 60s
ikr
I keep getting that feeling. Yes it makes me miss all these old movies even though i was born in the 90's and have never seen them.
This has got to be the most immortal sequence in musical film history
Agreed!
It is 👌👌👌👌
Film history period
The song and choreography gives me so much joy. You can tell he was genuinely happy and it shows to appreciate the little things in life. There's no sad backstory, or trace of bad intent in this song and I absolutely love it.
Yep. And it was done in one take! He also had a fever at the time and they used milk in the rain so the camera could pick it up!!!!
I can’t explain why but this it a huge smile on my face
Cause the song causes elation and joy. It brings feelings of how happy you can be when you are truly in love. Even something that gloom like rain won't stop it.
Craig Moore dont have to be that mean.
That creepy 😂
Khải Quang why?
So sweet, wish entertainment was as beautiful as this again.
Lol, yh I gotta watch that movie! Bought Footloose and never watched it!
Love the song,"Down Under" by Men at Work! I'm male, lol.
***** Yh I bet they did. Typical. So much of the time people just hear a fraction and leave it like that. Here's a good example: "Oh, I love 'Sledgehammer' by Peter Gabriel!" That's normally the start and end or at most 'Don't Give Up' may be mentioned too. I was the same until I immersed myself in his music and he's one of my all time fav artists. I love over 8 of his albums. So yh I believe you!
***** Lol! Shock The Monkey and Games Without Frontiers you mean! Well, that's a step up from a lot of people I've met.
My great grandma always sings this song to me. Last year I moved 80 miles away from her after living next door to her for 15 years. I miss her so much and never tell her I love her as much as I should. I don’t think she knows how much I love her. This song makes me think of her. Sorry this was super stupid but I just felt like saying it
This isn’t stupid at all.. it made me miss my grandma also! 💘
Tell here that you love here before is to late

What a beautiful story....
The single greatest expression of joy in motion picture history.
Legend says that he will never stop "singing in the rain"
Legend does not say that because Gene kellt died
I read somewhere that Gene Kelly had a bad cold while performing this scene. That's dedication!
Gosh, he's just so giddy and it's so pure and honestly its no wonder this scene is famous. Absolutely brilliant. I wish modern movies now had this kind of passion written into the characters.
AlexGophersIt Rey is the greatest character ever. She’s not a Mary Sue, as her talent is that she learns everything without a teacher way too well
The closest we can get is probably La La Land
Yeah this proves that movies CAN be good without sexual stuff in it! I wish we still had good quality movies like this! :(
The writing is only half of it at best. The rest comes from the performer. In this case Gene Kelly improvised some of this as well if I recall. Great talent and great writing combine here to create a classic of the modern age. Kelly is masterful as he makes it all seem effortless. It just might soon be time for a return to this kind of entertainment.
Who knew, that in that scene he was running a fever, true story.
I've never been a fan of musicals but Gene Kelly was pretty fucking incredible.
fuck yeah
quelle importance ? Never mind !
skynyrdjunkie4ever gene Kelly actually did this dance while he was very sick it is said he had a very high fever that day and was throwing up in days prior they only did one take because they didn't know if gene would be well enough to do more I just find that amazing the show must go on
skynyrdjunkie4ever and he was sick while fliming this movie !
You liked this? You should check out his performance in "It's always fair weather." UA-cam Gene Kelly tap dances on roller skates and prepare to have your mind blown....
This is among the most beautiful scenes that exist! Seeing Gene Kelly dancing and singing in the rain is something Wonderful! It is pure joy!! His smile is so sunny, his heart so big, his genuineness and light-heartedness in this scene deeply move! It is absolutely wonderful!! When I am sad, I always sing this song and my smile returns. This scene is able to give so much joy and hope in a few seconds. thank you very much Mr. Kelly!! I love you!!!

I totally agree with you, that's exactly what I think!
Jewel food stores at times will play this verse when their produce gets the spritz. I found myself hovering, selecting fruit and vegetables, people probably thought I was way too particular. Just waiting for Mr. Kelly to put a smile on my face.
Oh Gene Kelly ❤
Idk why I feel like the only teenager in love with these types of movies and the music
lol trust me, you arent . i mean hey, there are lots of teenagers ive met interested in these types of movies and music.
You are not alone here. 90% of my playlist are 60s to 80s songs
This is one of the best movies ever made

+Mr. Midshipman Indeed
Why what's it about. I like this song I know it from clock work orange where they sing this while they hurt people. It's a fun song though
+xpallodoc it is about 1920 Hollywood satire with a love story
HECK YEAH
Sometimes when it rains I sing this and dance around in it.
Not nearly as well, of course, but it's a great way to spend a summer shower.
Gregory Eatroff true that! I sang in the rain today and I'm still outside 😋
Such a powerful performance. He's so in love and high on life that the rain cannot dampen his spirit. This man is embracing and enjoying every single breath of his life. Yes, it's acting but it's something that I believe can inspire us to be better and enjoy life, no matter the weather.
that was so deep i think you just made a hole in the earth :)
There's something about that effortless leap onto the lamp post that stops my heart, no matter how many times I see it. I've never seen a musical number that can come close to the exuberance of this joyous dance. Why would anyone put thumbs down on it? Just baffles me.
"Take care of that throat of yours"
*Immediately starts dancing in the rain*
Fuck logic and reasoning!
*Sings while rainwater enters mouth*
his fedora was probably blocking the rain
ironically gene Kelly had 103 degree fever when they did the finalcut of this scene, yet pulled through and gave us this.
Fun fact: that's not water. It's milk. Google it
Fun fact: that's not milk. It's water. Google it
I can't believe this was all on one take and the only take they ever took of this scene
That's a myth
if u see different cut, then there are different takes, dont be silly
There are multiple panning shots that require dollies that you would see in the next frame after a cut, not to mention the lack of tech to pull that off does not exist. nonetheless I’m sure gene kelly could this shit in a take.
Not to mention man did this in the middle of the flu.
There are several cuts and they filmed this great number in two days.
They do not make great movies like this anymore, so sad, even as a kid I loved them.
No one:
High school boys when they get their first girlfriend:
Yeah pretty accurate lol
They just usually aren't as classy and stylish as Gene Kelly
*or people who live in the desert. 🌵
Lol
Can confirm
Gene Kelly was sick and had a high fever while filming this
Just goes to show what an amazing Actor he was.

ONE OF THE GREATEST SCENES IN MOVIE HISTORY!!!!! 💙
We had a major wildfire here yesterday and today it rained heavily. It immediately brought me here, that joy is felt by everyone near the fire today. Thank you Gene.
Hi
Hi uncle
I know that feeling! Was living in the Southern Highlands in Australia during a bushfire. We'd been given the evacuation notice and my flatmate was stuck in town. He was the only one with a car but was on the other side of the fire. The fire front was one or two kilometres away and all we could do was watch and then the wind changed direction and blew the fire back into itself. The volunteer fire brigade held the line. Damn they deserve more than medals and they don't even get medals. I praise them every damn time I hear of fire.
He looks so genuinely happy, I bet he didn't even had to act that part. I just love it!!
This wonderful scene was shot over a period of two days and Gene Kelly was sick with a 103 degree fever for the whole thing. What a trooper.
Is it fine that I cried to this ?
i think i know you!!!
+Mustafa Kemal Alemdar oh really ?
arent you some rondom guy who is ı dont know
+Mustafa Kemal Alemdar yes, yes I am
I did to, it's sure true Happiness. then this genetation
Being born in 1995 I feel like I missed something special.
Gene Kelly is one of the world class dancers and a master at tap. This is my all-time favorite scene of his.
Ok kids...that right there is called talent take note
geoge yanex you got that right!
George Yanez FINALLY!! SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THAT TALENT AND MONEY AREN'T THE SAME THING!!!! Anywho, I like the old movies BECAUSE OF THAT. These actors actually had talent and weren't in there because their uncle worked there, *cough* Nick Cage *cough* and the story was actually entertaining and A. Didn't have "Romantic Scenes" involved every three seconds, and B. The same thing didn't happen over and over and over and over again.
old stars actually had to have good voices, good dancing/acting ability, and looks. not at all like today
Thank you George. Now a days, everyone is too lazy, and takes shortcuts to get to the top especially in the entertainment business. Can you imagine how long and how hard Gene Kelly practiced to make this classic, iconic and world famous scene look easy.
For some reason this makes me feel good. Classic
mmh
Damn that outfit. Looking Sharp as hell
PERFECT, No matter how many times I watch this it just quite simply entertains me, it's joyous, magical , Gene Kelly is gone from us now but he left us this and many more performances, wonderful, musically, wonderful unique style of dancing. Bless him......RIP.
What's really amazing is how most of it was done in a single take. The umbrella flips, the dance steps, the camerawork....any of a hundred slip ups could've ruined the take. But Gene always delivered perfection and style.
Sometimes when I'm walking alone and the rain suddenly starts, I whisper this song which lightens up my mood
Today is Gene's birthday, he would be 104. Happy Birthday Gene! 🎂
Thanks :)
When I feel down and depressed I play this video and it reminds me of when movies where wholesome and life wasn't so bad like it is today. Kids will never feel this kind of joy there was back in old times. People have changed everyone is angry all the time and hateful towards each other. I hope one day when I get to heaven I hope life is like this again filled with joy and happiness.
That brought me tears of Joy. They don’t make them like they used to.
I'm _really_ not a fan of musical movies, but this man... This...
I was cured, all right!
videe well lil' brotha videe well
being born in 2001, it feels as I missed all the best times of 20th Century like the culture of the US, Current Events, Fashion, the movie Industry and everything etc. and for no explainable I get all emotional and nostalgic when I listen to old music of the 30s, 40s & 50s and idk why I srsly feel that way
As a little boy I would sit with my dad watching old movies, this is one of my dads favorites, he just passed and I wanted to revisit memory lane.
Am I the only person that gets emotional at this song?
Well now more than ever.
i do!
You're not the only one
Beans no I started a flood
It’s sad Hollywood can’t put out quality films like this anymore, I’m right there with you!
No matter how I'm feeling or the day I've had, this always makes me smile.
I just watched it while I was on a plane. I fell in love with this movie.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Masterpiece! Gene Kelly's☔ greatest performance! His energy is incredible and the talent and creativity he had was amazing. In fact the whole cast was at their best and Stanley Donen the director, was one of the greatest musical directors of that time. This scene and film are pure Old Hollywood magic...❤❤❤
"Some people feel the rain, some don't"
For some reason, that quote reminds me of this song. 😊 And this song makes me feel happy somehow... 😁😁
One_Direction _Zillas love this song its great
Some people feel the rain, others just get wet. ☔
I'm mad because this has less views than the Glee one...-_-

The mark of a true professional.
Had a temp of 101 when he filmed this.
NOTHING SHORT OF A CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS.

Hopefully yes.
It's raining a lot here today, but when I let my dog out in the very wet yard, I suddenly found myself singing this song. Then I had this intense need to dance and splash through puddles, but I was afraid my neighbors would think I had lost it. So I settled for watching Gene Kelly do it instead. Love, love, love this video! What a great talent he was!
One of those wonderful wonderful moments in film; beautiful
Movies from that time period had so much more class
Yup and today's movies have too much cursing 🙄
RIP Debbie Reynolds. Mother and Daughter reunited one day apart.
One of the most magical moments ever put on film. Immortal scene from the best musical in movie history. Usually I'm not a huge fan of musicals unless they're well done . Can't wait to watch La La Land, since the critics reviews are very positive.
RIP young Debbie.
Carlos Arias la la land is AMAZING.
I watched La La Land last night. It was nice to see a film without swearing and violence.
la la land is very reminiscent of singin' in the rain. i think you'll love it!
Somesaymisery Thank you! I surelly will. :)
I really needed this tonight. A longtime friend said that this reminds him of me. It wowed me on a technical side as it is one continuous take. Having a mom that taught jazz and tap, put me in private lessons at an early age. Alzheimer's took my mom a few years back but I know she is in heaven and is "Singin' and Dancin' in the rain".
These classic movies have a certain charm that is sadly missing in today's movies
LOL when you get that first kiss after a date feeling. This song says it all
Andres Cardeli Lol I laughed way too hard at this.
Andres Cardeli You are SOOOOO not lyin'!
One of the musicals I grew up with. RIP Debbie and Carrie. 😔
Olga Levin
Olga Levin R.I.P. Both...you know how, sometimes, you feel a special connection to certain actors, just people, even, but you've never met them?
Olga Levin
This is totally classic! I remember watching this with my mom. Too bad most kids today that don’t know good music!
One of the best scenes of history of cinema.
HE WAS THE EPITOME OF DANCE and so handsome
IS THIS TALENT OR IS IT TALENT!!!
Yes, you are correct it is talent. It is of the very the best and never to be repeated variety, starring the best dancer ever.
It's raining right now in New Jersey Thank you Gene Kelly.
Why can’t songs these days be so magical like this😔😔💫
You can't find talent like this these days. Genuine performance from Mr. Kelly. Thanks Gene. You make me happy.
Not only was the studio blazing hot the day they shot this number, but Gene was amazingly running a 103-degree fever for the shoot's duration, making this all the more remarkable!
1:01 that step into position when the note hits is my favourite part, so iconic.
Perhaps the most joyous 4 minutes and 50 seconds in ALL of movie history ! It needs a Genius like Gene to make it all come alive and make us go back 50 years in time, to be 25 years old again ! These priceless scenes and wonderful tunes from the old classics bring tears to our eyes. Why can't we have those days back ? A little bit of heaven in these days of deceit and desperation !
one day i will be this happy
i hope we all do :)
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! Only an idiot would give this a thumbs down! Gene Kelly is amazing, there will never be another!
True
Each time I listen to this song, it gives me joy and smile! I can't stop listening to it many many times : lovely voice and beautiful dance!!...
I'm still listening to this song in 2019. Happy new year😘
The part when he swings his umbrella around is probably the most iconic moment in movie history. I's a masterpiece!

What a joyful lovely song, evergreen ❤️

John Elstad
John Elstad Yes, the footrest was waist high and the lamp post was wet, light as a feather.
That was pretty darn good. Very noticeable to me.
It's too bad dances today are twerking, hitting the quan, and many other talentless dances that take no skill to perform. People don't understand what it takes to perform a dance perfectly.
n 206 down Pat's house is sick there was how that's wrong postpone we need to back it up right back at me take the word of
+Joseph Stallin' You're forgetting about true and wonderful dances that still exist today. Dances like this still go on... just the moves you mentioned are more "talked about" due to the younger generation's popularity with it.
+Joseph Stallin I never suspected i would agree with Stalin on anything
+Joseph Stallin'

This movie is an absolute masterpiece.

64 years ago this film was released. 64 YEARS ago! This dance number has never aged a day. Great music, great dancing and I love listening to it on my way to school!
Seeing Gene Kelly dance and sing in the rain is among the most beautiful things you can see in this life. Love you forever Gene!
