I also like in Zone 7. We had a very very hard freeze this year. Killed lots of vegetation but the gingers stayed in ground and came back this year in abundance. Have several cones already 😊 Thank you for sharing this video. Love the knowledge!
That is some great advice, Michael. We drove through N.C. on I-95 on Sunday. We will be driving by you on the other side (I-81) on Friday. I will wave as we go by!
Howdy Howdy! I have been growing shampoo ginger for a few years I am in zone 7 I planted them in a pot and then overWinter in the greenhouse. I don’t really know enough about them. Now this is neat! I hope you have a great week! Blessings! Wendy🙏🏻🌎🇺🇸
That is exactly what I would have done for your zone as an experiment. Digging them up would be starting all over again. Your plants look good and healthy. I've put out several videos on the shampoo Ginger this year but I'm in zone 8b. Can't wait to see when they pop up next year.
Thank you very much you have made me feel much better about my decision. Will be looking at your Ginger videos for more advice. Thank you and have a great wekend
Awesome brother !! You are the most knowledgable dude I know on everything that grows from the ground......no wonder you were in charge of Indiconia !! ;) Cheers amigo.
This is a freaky plant Professor, You dont eat this plant but actually milk the shampoo gel from the flowers. Thank you for check-in it out my brother!!
Ohhh I want to grow this! Thank you for sharing! 😊💗 Looking forward to see how these do over the winter and also what you do with them when you harvest them!
I bet it would do even better in your zone Shawna, you guys wouldn't have to over winter I don't think. Maybe when we get it well established we can send you guys some nuggets to plant :)
I’m in zone 8 and I started growing shampoo ginger about 3 years ago. Lots of luck the first year, last year I only had two cones, and this year none have popped up yet. But lots of greenery. It’s prop my favorite plant.
Thank you, This method did not work. Our plants did not come back. We recommend leaving them in pots and putting them in the greenhouse if you live in zone 7 or lower.
I had to look up what they are , be pretty cool once you get cones from them . My grandfather had fig tree's and would build wire cages around them and fill them with leaf matter and wrap in all in burlap for the winter . Look forward to seeing you do with these .
I am in claremore, ok. I started my shampoo ginger in pots in the house last summer. They stayed healthy all winter then i put them outside this year. Was wondering about an update on your shampoo ginger. I have mine in a large tub outside and it's doing great. I still don't have flowers but they have multiplies and getting a nice size. I read it may tale several years to flower. I have lots of questions about the overwintering process.
I wonder how they would fair here above the 45th parallel. I'm zone 8b a d other gingers over winter here on containers. We don't have the more intense sunlight of south eastern US 8b growing zones and it does make a difference when trying g to get things to grow to size.
Ive heard some very good things about that zone Patty, no over-wintering, and let it grow naturally in partial shade. You dont eat this plant but actually milk the shampoo gel from the flowers.
I have never heard of it but notice a few talking about it lately, does it have another name that I might know down here? Heck I have 3 different types of ginger now
Zingiber zerumbet is its Gen name but Hawains call it Awahpuhi. You dont eat this plant but actually milk the shampoo gel from the flowers. Thank you for everything bro
That's a nice thick layer but I'm still surprised it's enough to protect them through the winter. Here in the Chicago area, they would have to be dug up for sure. -15 F to -25 F would take them out even with a heavy layer of insulation. A bad winter can see the frost line go down 40 inches. Ginger is something I want to try growing. Never heard of shampoo Ginger before.
You should definitely try and check it out. We are on trial and error, and hoping and praying. We did bring in a couple Rhizomes to overwinter inside. It usually doesn't get lower than in the teens here so we are prying it is going to be a mild winter. We will also wrap it once it gets too cold out here to hold in the heat so to speak. 😁. We are going to try for regular ginger next year also. I love it!
@@MBHeritageFarms thanks for the quick response. I have some shampoo ginger in the ground that i just planted. So I'm trying to decide wether or not I should leave it. (During winter) I was successful at overwintering Taro here in zone 7, Virginia. Using having leaf mulch.

Thank you Ashley. Unfortunately ours did not overwinter. I am not sure what we did wrong, but we will try again!
We are still in the 90s down here, till next week then we will be in the 60s, but back to the 90s again.
Sounds good Peanut, Im happy not living in hell during summer so I will just hang here in NC lol

Thats a few hours away from us but we will be waving back Rick!! Thank you for watch my friend have a great weekend
Shampoo ginger is so cool. Hope they come out and do well for y'all in the spring.
Me too Chuck there is just something about milking a plant like a cow and then pouring the extract on your head. Have a great weekend
@@MBHeritageFarms Lol! Well, if you put it that way.

If they dont do anything next year we may abandon the project LOL Have a great weekend Craig
I've never heard of that type of plant. But, it sure was interesting! Enjoyed! Take care you two!
You dont eat this Ginger but actually milk the shampoo gel from the flowers. Native to Hawaii. Thank you Michael!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully we can harvesy some next year for sharing, Fingers crossed it over-winter correctly

Thank you for the informative vid :) I’m gonna order some rhizomes and give it a shot in Seattle
Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate it. I hope your rhizomes thrive in Seattle - keep me posted on your progress!
Looking good and l have not hear of shampoo ginger how is the taste of it, same as the original
No it's not the culinary Ginger. But if you look it up you'll find it has medicinal properties.

Hi. Thanks for making this vídeo. Did the shampoo ginger make it through the winter? Has it sprouted back up this spring?
Not as of yet
@@MBHeritageFarms thanks for the quick response. I have some shampoo ginger in the ground that i just planted. So I'm trying to decide wether or not I should leave it. (During winter)
I was successful at overwintering Taro here in zone 7, Virginia. Using having leaf mulch.
We covered in alot of mulch so it may take it a little bit to come through. We are super excited about it coming out. Fingers crossed. 🤞🤞
Did they end up coming back up?
Any updates? Did it survive the winter ?
No it did not, its best to bring them and over-winter
Any updates?
Didnt work at all, I think overwintering indoors or a greenhouse is the only way in zone 7. Thank you for the comment. Have a great weekend
Did it ever grow back?
No it did not, I recommend any in zone 7,6,5,4,3,2, and so forth, should over-winter them inside. Thank you for watching.
